The confessional is a somewhat private room facing a camera in Total Drama, where contestants on the show can reveal their personal thoughts on the game, get something off their chests, explain their plans, and cast votes for their fellow contestants. For the most part, these sessions are carried out in complete secrecy, only being revealed upon the airing of the show or at Chris' discretion.

Total Drama Island[]

Snapshot 2009-02-12 00-32-48

Gwen using the confessional, being the first person to do so in the series and the season.

The confession cam takes on the appearance of an old-fashioned outhouse. On the side facing the campers is a camera taped to the door, where the campers dish their personal feelings. Also inside the bathroom are typical outhouse sights - a toilet, toilet paper, a window, several carvings in the wooden walls (such as a skull), and a roll of fly paper with several dead flies stuck to it. Despite these amenities, however, the confession cam doesn't seem to be the campers' main lavatory, as there are bathroom stalls in the communal bathrooms. Still, a few campers have used the confession cam like a normal bathroom, but mostly by accident on Lindsay's part. It's clear that the outhouse is not a hygienic place, as during most confessions, a large swarm of flies are constantly buzzing around the campers' heads and chest.

Normally, a confession consists of only one camper speaking into the camera. However, on occasions, two enter the stall to talk together, such as Katie and Sadie, due to their habit of staying together at all times. Even though Chris mentions that these confessions are completely secret, some of the campers at times worriedly ask if the person they are talking about will ever hear their confessions or another camper is heard, waiting outside. There is only one time that the confessional videos were shown to the campers in Total Drama Island, during "No Pain, No Game," where Eva is eliminated for the second time.

Aside from speaking their mind, campers also go in the stall to cast their votes. It's unclear if all that is needed to cast a vote is the camper saying their name into the camera or if a written ballot is also needed, as Harold is seen rigging paper ballots in "Basic Straining," whereas in "No Pain, No Game," Chris only shows their vocal votes.

During the finale, the confessional is left nearly unusable by Owen when he uses it as a bathroom after eating Heather's laxative cupcakes. However, in "Total Drama, Drama, Drama, Drama Island," it appears to be fully operational again.

Total Drama Action[]

LindsayLovesNewConf

Lindsay is the first person to use the confessional in Total Drama Action.

With the confessional outhouse camera unusable because of their change of location, Chris announces to the castmates in "Monster Cash" that, for Total Drama Action, the contestants will now dish their secrets in a confessional makeup trailer, which Lindsay immediately takes a liking to. Despite its identification as a makeup trailer, there are various shirts and other props seen in the background. The trailer itself is filled to the brim with various cosmetics for the castmates to use if they choose. Possibly due to additional space, confessionals with two contestants are more common this season than the previous one, including a few confessionals with Geoff and Bridgette, Duncan and Harold, and Lindsay and Beth.

Also, inside the confessional appear to be makeup artists, who at times try to apply makeup to the castmates. These artists are only been seen with arms reaching out from beyond the border of the mirror to apply the makeup to the castmate. Occasionally, an object is thrown at a castmate when they're using the confessional. It is unknown if objects are thrown by the makeup artists or the interns or producers of the show.

Heather vote

Heather is the first person to vote for the winner in the voting confessional for the finale.

However, the biggest change to the use of the confessional is that now the contestants cast their votes right before the elimination ceremony and no longer in their private confessionals, probably because of Courtney's elimination in "Basic Straining."

In order to vote for a winner in the season finale, Chris and Chef present a portable bathroom for the eliminated contestants to cast their vote for a winner in. A pen is provided to write with, while toilet paper is used to write on. Despite this, some of the contestants still cast their votes vocally.

During the special the confessional is barely used due to the contestants not being at the film lot for the majority of the episode. However, at the end of the special, the contestants chosen for the next season, including two new additions, use it again and talk about their feelings of being in another season. Sierra however uses the confessional for so long that the camera's battery eventually runs out, cutting her off in mid-sentence.

Total Drama World Tour[]

CameraInPottyAGAIN?

Leshawna is the first person to use the confessional in Total Drama World Tour.

After asking where the restrooms on the Total Drama Jumbo Jet were, Leshawna is directed to the main Total Drama World Tour confessional, which is yet another bathroom, much to her dismay. Once again at elimination ceremonies, the contestants must vote while inside this confessional; this time, they cast their votes by stamping another player's passport.

HeatherCockpit

Heather likes this confessional much more than the other one.

There is also a second additional confessional in the cockpit of the plane, which is usually interrupted with Chef's side-commentary, since he is also there listening to them. Only Heather, Alejandro, and Cody have used the Cockpit Confessional, though Harold, Izzy, and Blaineley have also spent time in it. DJ, Lindsay, and Sierra have also been there in exclusive clips.

Even though the jet exploded as of "Awwwwww, Drumheller," the confessional booth is still somewhat intact, although the roof is missing. Despite the damage, the remaining contestants and Sierra continue to use it in "Planes, Trains, and Hot Air Mobiles."

Cody hawaii

Cody uses the Hawaiian confessional in the season finale.

In "Hawaiian Punch," a new confessional is used to replace the lavatory confessional. Located in Hawaii, it resembles the original outhouse confessional. It has wooden walls surrounding it, which resemble planks, and a single roll of toilet paper on the wall; there are several vines dropping into it as it has no roof. The final three are the only contestants to use this confessional, as they are the only contestants that are still actively competing in the season.

Total Drama: Revenge of the Island[]

Vlcsnap-2012-01-06-16h35m37s22

Mike is the first person to use the confessional in Total Drama: Revenge of the Island.

The outhouse confessional from Camp Wawanakwa, used in season one, returns and is the only one used throughout the season. Generally, the confessionals have the same purpose as before and show no major differences from their function in Total Drama Island: the campers express their thoughts in front of a camera.

The confessional had significance in Dawn's elimination. She knew Scott had bad intentions for the team and planned to tell the others in order to have him voted off. However, Scott overheard and framed her for stealing everyone's items, causing her elimination.

Total Drama All-Stars[]

De

Courtney is the first person to use the confessional in Total Drama All-Stars.

The outhouse confessional returns in this season as well, remaining the same as previous seasons. However, Chris now has a habit of intruding in on the contestants' confessionals using the intercom.

In "Saving Private Leechball," during Jo's confessional, Chris brings down a tablet which has a recording of Lightning as a message to Jo. In this pre-recorded message, Lightning is telling Jo that he told her he was right about how he should not have been voted out.

Total Drama: Pahkitew Island[]

AwayFromAmy

Samey is the first person to use the confessional in Total Drama: Pahkitew Island.

The outhouse confessional is revealed by Chris to be the only thing that remains intact after the destruction of Camp Wawanakwa in "The Final Wreck-ening" and is brought to Pahkitew Island to be used by the new contestants. It maintains the same function as it did during the previous seasons in which it is used.

In "Lies, Cries and One Big Prize," Chris uses Shawn's confessionals to cause drama between him and Jasmine, to which Sky responds by saying that is why she is careful about what she says.

Total Drama Island (2023)[]

Priya'sFirstConfessional

Priya is the first person to use the confessional in Total Drama Island (2023).

Following the restoration of Camp Wawanakwa, the outhouse confessional is transferred back from Pahkitew Island. Like other seasons taking place there, the outhouse confessional remains the same in function while its appearance has received a slightly updated design. While the symbol of a heart impaled with an arrow remains, the symbol of a skull has been moved in place of "Kilroy was here" symbol. The latter has been removed, along with the Ankh Cross symbol. In addition, the roll of toilet paper has been used up. Additionally, the time of the day confessionals are recorded is more accurately represented through the continuously changing colors of the sky.

The confessional plays a major part in MK's plot this season. In Pirates of the Cabbagean, MK connects the confessional's camera with a phone she took from Julia and uses it to record the other contestants' confessionals while fast forwarding the times the confessional is used for toilet purposes. Unfortunately, this plan backfires in Launch Back of Notre Game after MK calls Julia a "butt-knuckle", something that Julia has said only in the confessionals. This tips her off that MK has been watching everyone's confessionals, leading to her elimination. The phone containing the confessionals was thrown into the lake by Bowie, saying that nobody having it is better than Julia having it. However, the recorded confessionals came to serve a new purpose for him in The Truth, The Pole Truth and Nothing But the Truth. After seeing that same phone washed ashore, Bowie purposely lost the challenge so he can get the phone before anyone else notices. It was those confessionals that he came to learn of Millie's book, which he uses to sabotage both her and Priya near the finale.

Total Drama Island (2024)[]

Priya doesn't like her summer job

Priya is once again the first person to use the confessional in Total Drama Island (2024).

The confessional remains unchanged from last season.

In Breaking Up is Hard to Do, Wayne decides to use the outhouse as his object and is tasked to break it into small pieces to fit through a door hole. However, all his attempts to break it fail, with Chef believing that the outhouse has become indestructible after years of farts of previous contestants occupying it petrifying the wood. Wayne does eventually tear off a wall of the confessional, causing confessionals for the rest of the episode to be missing the wall. The wall is fixed by next episode.

Total Drama Presents: The Ridonculous Race[]

In the spin-off series, interviews share the same function with the confessionals where teams are interviewed regarding their current feelings about the race. These take place in front of a wall, showing a green and blue world map in the background.

Total DramaRama[]

Unlike the classic series, the confessionals in DramaRama appear and disappear by the sound of a pop-up. They usually take place on a frog-like couch and there are no details given regarding who is recording them or what they were told to do there. The characters usually make confessionals in order to express their feelings about the events that take place in the daycare.

Trivia[]

  • According to Tom McGillis, the confessional was not an original idea of the creators, and was a last-minute addendum to the show, due to the first episode needing more footage.
  • Total Drama Island, Total Drama: Revenge of the Island, Total Drama All-Stars, Total Drama: Pahkitew Island, Total Drama Island (2023), and Total Drama Island (2024) all feature the same outhouse confessional.
  • Located behind the campers in the confessional outhouse is an image of Kilroy, a popular doodle that is part of the "Kilroy was here" fad. Other graffiti includes: a skull and crossbones, a love-struck heart, and either an ankh or the sign of Venus.
  • Sometimes, confessionals appear during the middle of the challenge when it looks impossible for a camper to enter it afterwards. This was pointed out by Zee in "Paddle Field Earth".
  • "Haute Camp-ture" (Island) is the only episode in the whole Total Drama franchise not to feature any actual confessional scenes in the outhouse, as the eliminated contestants gave their thoughts about their experience and the final five as interviews in Playa Des Losers.
  • The only campers to ever seem to use the confessional outhouse as a bathroom are Owen, Lindsay, and Ripper.
  • Chris is the first person to use the confessional in Total Drama Island.
    • Gwen is the first camper to use the confessional.
      • She is also the first female to use the confessional in season one, and the first female to ever use the confessional. Owen is also the first male contestant to use the confessional, but the second person to ever use the confessional.
        • Coincidentally, they are both the two finalists of the first season.
  • Lindsay is the first cast member to use the confessional in Total Drama Action.
  • Leshawna is (inadvertently) the first to use the confessional in Total Drama World Tour. Meanwhile, Heather is the first person to use the secondary cockpit confessional.
  • Zoey and Mike are the first two members of their gender to use the confessional in Total Drama: Revenge of the Island. Interestingly enough, they are in a relationship, the same teams and both are the finalists of the following season.
  • Courtney is the first to use the confessional in Total Drama All-Stars.
  • Samey is the first to use the confessional in Total Drama: Pahkitew Island.
  • Priya is the first to use the confessional in both Total Drama Island (2023) and Total Drama Island (2024).
    • This makes Priya the only contestant in Total Drama history to be the first one to use the confessional twice in the first episode of a season.
  • Gwen, DJ, Scott, Zoey, and Ripper are the only contestants to use the confessional wearing their swimwear.
  • Courtney, Scott, and Raj are the only contestants to use the confessional wearing their pajamas.
  • Heather is the only character to be seen using every confessional on the show.
  • Cody and Justin are the only contestants to use the confessional and foreshadow something happening later in the episode. As Cody becomes covered in bandages and is in a wheelchair after being mauled by a bear, and Justin is covered in tar from falling into the tar pit.
  • Alejandro, Cameron, Chris, Cody, Gwen, Lightning, and Trent are the only characters to throw up in the confessional.
  • Total Drama Island, Total Drama: Revenge of the Island, and Total Drama Island (2023) are the only seasons where not every competing contestant uses the confessional at least once.
  • Mike is the only male contestant to be the first to use the confessional.
  • The confessional in Total Drama Action and the cockpit confessional in Total Drama World Tour are the only confessionals in the series that are not in the form of some sort of lavatory.
  • Over the course of the series, more than one character are often seen using the confessional together:

Total Drama Island:

Total Drama Action:

Total Drama World Tour:

Total Drama: Revenge of the Island:

Total Drama All-Stars:

Total Drama: Pahkitew Island:

Total Drama Island (2023):

Total Drama Island (2024):

  • Total Drama Island (2024) features the most amount of double confessionals in the series so far.
  • Wayne's team using the confessional together in "Soar Losers" sets a new record of seven people using the confessional at once.
  • For the first three seasons, the number of confessionals featured in each season equals the season's number. In Total Drama Island, there is one confessional. In Total Drama Action, there are two confessionals, and in Total Drama World Tour, there are three confessionals.
  • Blaineley, Ezekiel, Staci, and Tyler are the only contestants to never use the outhouse confessional.
  • Tyler is the contestant who goes the longest before using any confessional, being the last contestant of the original cast to use the confessional. Despite being introduced in "Not So Happy Campers—Part 1" (Island), he doesn't use the confessional until "Anything Yukon Do, I Can Do Better" (World Tour).
  • Alejandro, Ezekiel, and Sierra are currently the only contestants to use the confessional in a season they did not participate in.
  • Caleb, Ezekiel, Izzy, Staci, and Tyler are the only five contestants to never have used the confessional in a season that they competed in.
    • Ezekiel and Tyler never use the confessional in Total Drama Island, the former due to his early elimination.
    • Izzy never uses the confessional in Total Drama World Tour.
    • Staci never uses the confessional in Total Drama: Revenge of the Island.
    • Caleb never uses the confessional in Total Drama Island (2023) due to his early elimination.
  • Ezekiel, Justin, Noah, Alejandro, and Sierra all have their very first confessional in one of the one-hour specials:
  • Owen is the first male contestant in the first two seasons to use the confessional.
  • Alejandro is the first male to use both the lavatory confessional and the cockpit confessional.
  • The amount of confessional booths in the first three seasons matches the number of the season:
    • Total Drama Island had only one confessional: the outhouse stall.
    • Total Drama Action had two: the makeup booth and the outhouse stall in the finale.
    • Total Drama World Tour had three: one in the lavatory, one in the plane's cockpit, and an outhouse in the finale.
  • Total Drama staff are allowed to use the confessional, as both Chris and Chef have used the confessionals on several occasions.
  • Minor characters such as the killer, José, and Leshaniqua had used the confessional at least once.
  • Animals have periodically been seen using the confessional, specifically a bear, loon, panda bear, Sasquatchanakwa, and Fang.
  • The outhouse confessional is the most featured confessional in the series, being in all but two seasons.
  • Total Drama World Tour's Cockpit Confessional is the least-used recurring confessional in the series, as most contestants apparently favor the Lavatory Confessional. The last time it is used is in Broadway, Baby! by Cody.
    • Coincidentally, the final three of Total Drama World Tour are the only three contentants who used the Cockpit for a Confessional, rather than for different purposes like other characters do.
  • Geoff and Bridgette, Duncan and Gwen, and Alejandro and Heather are the only couples who are caught kissing in the confessional.
  • A running gag in the series is that the contestants are able to use the confessional no matter how far they are from it.
  • Staci is the only contestant in Total Drama history to never use the confessional at all.
    • However, due to her tendency to lie all the time, this makes complete sense.
  • Dakota (after her first elimination) is the first intern to use the confessional.
  • In Total Drama: Revenge of the Island, Scott is often seen getting hurt while using the confessional.
  • Starting from Total Drama All-Stars, Chris appears to always be listening in on the confessional and will sometimes butt in over the intercom, often to taunt or laugh at the contestants' expense.
    • All-Stars:
      • In "Saving Private Leechball," when Jo regrets her decision to dump Lightning so early, immediately Chris makes a monitor showing a recording that Lightning left taunting her. Chris explains this to a confused Jo, before she tears the monitor off.
      • In "Food Fright," when Alejandro states Chris will pay for laughing at him, Chris expresses his doubt, before calling him "Al."
      • In "The Obsta-Kill Kourse," after Alejandro reveals his surname is "Burromuerto", Chris mockingly asks him to explain what his surname meant in English.
      • In "The Final Wreck-ening," when Alejandro and Heather are making out in the confessional, Chris pounds on the door and tells them that was the "most disgusting thing that has ever happened in there."
    • Pahkitew Island:
      • While Dave pretends that he will be fine touching the grease, Chris announces where the grease for the challenge originated from ("I Love You, Grease Pig!").
      • When Dave is in the confessional worried that he's allergic to itching powder (after getting covered with it), Chris tells him everyone was allergic to itching powder ("Twinning Isn't Everything").
  • Sierra, Mal, and Nichelle are the only characters who have something happen to the camera while they are using the confessional.
  • Heather has used the confessional more times than any other contestant in the series, having made a total of one hundred and twenty-five confessionals.
  • Heather, Gwen, Courtney, and MK are the only contestants to gain the ability to break the camera.
