For the chapter of the same name, see Chapter 907.

The Empty Throne is a historical seat located on Mary Geoise, inside Pangaea Castle. It is said to be located at the very center of the world.[1]

Although it is officially stated to have no occupant in order to maintain peace and equality among nations,[1] it is actually occupied by the enigmatic sovereign Imu, whose authority supersedes that of the Five Elders.[2]

Appearance[]

The Empty Throne is an extremely tall, ornamented red and gold throne that bears the symbol of the World Government. The golden armrests are designed to look like lion head statues.[1] It is a size suitable for a large sized human, one who is around two or three times the size of a normal human.[3]

Empty Throne Height

The throne's high position compared to the main floor's level makes whoever sits on the throne appear supreme.

The throne itself is kept on top of a three-level red and white platform, which is positioned extremely high up from the main floor, almost making it look and feel like whoever sits on it rules supreme over everyone. On the third floor, there are nineteen weapons planted on the ground (both swords and axes), which are from the rulers of the twenty founding kingdoms, except for the Arabasta Kingdom[3] while on the first floor are weapons of kingdoms that later joined the World Government.

Overview[]

According to an employee of the World Government, the Empty Throne has existed since 800 years before the story's present time. Each of the twenty weapons placed around the throne are supposed to represent one of the twenty kingdoms that founded the World Government, symbolizing their protection over the seat.[1] Although there are actually nineteen weapons, since Nefertari Lili, the monarch of Arabasta Kingdom, decided not to become a World Noble and return to her own kingdom.[3]

Imu Sits on the Empty Throne

Imu, the owner of the Empty Throne and the true ruler of the world.

The false premise is that no one is allowed to sit on this throne, not even the Five Elders or the World Nobles, as its vacancy symbolizes that the world is not ruled by a single figure, sending a message of peace by making all royals equal before it with none greater or lesser than the other. The kings and queens attending the Levely are required to pledge that they will not take the throne for themselves in greed, just like the original twenty founding kings once did.[1] In truth, the Empty Throne is secretly occupied by the mysterious Imu, whose authority is superior to that of the Five Elders.[2] In order to maintain the illusion of equality, the Five Elders and Imu mandate the deaths of any third party who bear witness to this secret, as Nefertari Cobra was ultimately killed, while they sought to kill both Sabo and Wapol as well for the same reason.[4]
