- "I used to listen to people's prayers. In here and out on the street. You know, people asking for God's help or justice or vengeance sometimes. See, it's always the same. 'Please, God.' I thought that God let me hear the prayers so that I could answer. So that's what I did. That's what I was trying to do, was trying to help people. But I am not what I was."
- ―Matt Murdock to Paul Lantom
Please is the second episode of the third season of the television series Daredevil.
Synopsis[]
Grieving for the life he's abandoned, Matt suffers a crisis of faith. Fisk make a deal with the FBI that turns him into a target.
Plot[]
Growing up at Saint Agnes Orphanage, Matt Murdock becomes a troublemaker, disobeying the nuns and picking fights with other kids. Paul Lantom tells him that while his anger is understandable, it is not sustainable, and Murdock needs to find a way to deal with it. Murdock is frustrated that God does not answers his prayers, feeling that He neglects him, to which Lantom says that His signs are more subtle than he thinks, asking him to listen carefully.
With the intel provided by Wilson Fisk, the FBI conduct a successfull operation against the Albanian Syndicate, taking their command into custody, and ceasing important data about their dealings. Back at the headquarters, Ray Nadeem is celebrated by his colleagues, as his deal with Fisk allowed the FBI to bring down the Albanians and their allies in the law enforcement. Meanwhile, Fisk attends a prison gym for a training, but gets shanked by another inmate for being a snitch. Wounded, Fisk still attacks an inmate and almost kills him, but gets stopped by the guards who sound the alarm.
Maggie Grace finds an injured Murdock at the church basement, chiding him for his reckless decision to go out on the streets when he was not ready. Grace tends to his wounds, warning him that he would die if he keeps going like this, ignoring Murdock's attempts to brush her off. Murdock asks Grace what would she feel if her purpose of being a nun was taken away from her, to which she replies that she would not lose faith and find another purpose. Grace empathizes with Murdock's despair, admititng that she once considered abandoning being a nun, but changed her mind eventually. Murdock replies that their experiences are not the same, as he no longer cares about what God wants from him.
While working on the Albanians case, Nadeem finds out from Wellers that other agents are trying to take over Fisk detail, so he goes to speak with Tammy Hattley. Hattley immediately declines, but Nadeem insists that Fisk can provide the FBI with invaluable intel on the crimianl underworld, and he is the only agent he is willing to speak to. Hattley tells him that if Nadeem is put in charge of Fisk's case, the FBI command would be looking into him, including his financial misfortunes. Nadeem refuses to back down, claiming that he is the whole reason of their success, pleading with Hattley to give him a chance to improve his situation. She eventually relents and allows Nadeem to run the case, warning him that they will both suffer if Fisk stops talking.
Mitchell Ellison tasks Karen Page with looking into the recent attack on Rostam Kazemi, but Page tells him that she cannot do it, as she is preoccupied with the story on Midland Circle. Ellison is not happy that she is still hung up on that, assuming that it is more than just a story to her, telling her to drop it regardless. She goes to Riverbank Medical Center where she speaks with Neda Kazemi, who does not want to speak to the press, but Page convinces her to talk. Kazemi reluctantly opens up and tells her that some people tried to kidnap her and her father, but to Page's shock, Kazemi says that they were rescued by the man in the black mask.
Murdock meets with Lantom at the church, recalling how he used to listen to people's prayers, and how he was thinking that God gave him the gifts so he could hear and answer the prayers. Murdock says that he tried to do what he could to help people but he cannot do that anymore, saying that he was deluding himself by thinking that it was God's plan. Lantom says that maybe his realization is a sign that he should stop doing what he does, but Murdock replies that it has nothing to do with it and he will continue to be Daredevil in spite of God. Murdock then goes out to look into the kidnappers he stopped last night, recalling a specific smell from their van, and asks around to find some clues.
Nadeem goes to Ryker's Island to see Fisk after the attack, and he remarks that the word of his dealings witht the FBI spread out, and he became a target. Nadeem reminds him that the deal is vital if he wants Vanessa Marianna charges to be dropped, but Fisk replies that he cannot be of use if he is dead. Nadeem and Hattley meet with Blake Tower and Chris DiMolina to negotiate a house incarceration for Fisk and move him out of prison, but both of them are against giving him a lighter sentence. Nadeem claims that while he agrees that Fisk must pay for what he has done, his intel is way too valuable and can potentially save a lot of lives, which makes Tower reconsider.
Foggy Nelson attends a family dinner at Nelson's Meats, where his parents congratulate him with his successfull lawyer career, although Nelson is not as cheerful about it. He has a drink with his brother Theo who has taken over the shop in his absence, although he is a bit jealous of Nelson's success. Nelson opens up that he does not feel fulfilled with how career went, especially now that Murdock is gone. Page comes to see Nelson and tells him that Murdock might be out there alive, but Nelson is hesitant to believe, thinking that if Murdock was alive, he would come to them. Page says that Nelson himself does not believe that Murdock is dead, but Nelson insists that he is.
Following the trail, Daredevil manages to find kidnappers' hideout at Chris French Cleaners and breaks inside, taking out the criminals inside and calling the New York City Police Department to arrest them. He then visits Kazemi at the hospital, finding her father comatose but alive, and tells her to testify against the people who attacked her and her father. Kazemi thanks God that he was around to save them, but Daredevil replies that God has nothing with what happened, he was the one who help them.
With the request for house incarceration granted, the FBI prepares to move Fisk out of the prison, with Nadeem personally escorting him out. While driving, Nadeem reads him a set of rules, warning that Fisk will constantly be under the FBI surveilance, to which Fisk replies that his love for Marianna is a more inescapable jail for him that the any other place FBI can place him into. Suddenly, the FBI convoy gets ambushed by the Albanians who kill numerous FBI agents and are planning to take Fisk out. They get confronted by Benjamin Poindexter who guns down each and every one of them, even those who surrendered, saving Fisk from getting killed.
As Murdock walks out of the hospital, he hears numerous emergency cars with wounded FBI agents, and to his utter horror, he overhears the talk that Fisk has been released from prison.
