- "I'm not trying to be a hero. I'm just a guy that got fed up with men like you and I decided to do something about it."
"That's what makes you dangerous. It's not the mask. It's not the skills. It's your ideology. The lone man, who thinks he can make a difference." - ―Masked Man and Wilson Fisk
Condemned is the sixth episode of the first season of the television series Daredevil.
Synopsis[]
Daredevil finds himself trapped in the fallout of Fisk's plan to take control of Hell's Kitchen. Ben Urich digs closer to the truth.
Plot[]
The New York City Police Department officers apprehend the Masked Man, but as they prepare to execute Vladimir Ranskahov, he breaks free and fights them off. Knowing that the NYPD is under orders to kill Ranskahov, the Masked Man escapes with him, while he is unconscious. The news of the bombing in Hell's Kitchen reach the New York Bulletin, and Ben Urich realizes that the all the places that were hit belong to the Russian Mafia.
James Wesley informs Wilson Fisk that the Masked Man and Ranskahov escaped from the police and the former is likely trying to get the information about Fisk from Ranskahov. Fisk remarks that Madame Gao will not be pleased as Fisk did not handle the situation with the Russian Mafia is neatly as promised. Fisk decides to explain her the situation is at is, while ordering the police to find the Masked Man and Ranskahov and finish their job. The NYPD sweeps the destroyed Russian Hideout, where Christian Blake and Carl Hoffman find an injured but alive Ivan. Blake tortures Ivan to find out where Ranskahov might be hiding, but as he claims that he does not know anyting, Blake puts him out of his misery.
The Masked Man hides Ranskahov at an Abandoned Building, as he threatens to kill the vigilante for what he did to his brother. The Masked Man insists that he did not kill Anatoly or attacked his operations, telling Ranskahov that Fisk was the man behind everything. He says that his goal is to bring Fisk to justice for what he has done and Ranskahov laughs at his naivete, but the Masked Man reminds him that he does not have much of an option, as he is still bleeding. Ranskahov makes it clear that he is not interested in cooperating, before losing consciousness from his injuries.
The Metro-General Hospital is overrun with the casualties from the bombing, as Foggy Nelson and Karen Page bring the injured Elena Cardenas there. Claire Temple tends to her, and while Nelson tries to call Murdock and make sure that he is okay, Page notices that he also has been injured. Temple receives a call from the Masked Man who asked her help with stabilizing Ranskahov, although she is not keen on saving him after what the Russian Mafia did to her. He convinces Temple that Ranskahov's information can help bring Fisk down and save lives, so she reluctantly walks him through the process of cauterizing his wound with a flare.
However, Ranskahov's screams get picked up by Sullivan who enters the building, reporting to the NYPD about the disturbance. He finds the unsonscious Ranskahov right before the Masked Man subdues him and finds out that Sullivan is not working for Fisk. The Masked Man tells him to contact the NYPD and report that no backup is required, promising that he will let Sullivan walk eventually, but he does the opposite before the vigilante knocks him out. The NYPD officers led by Blake and Hoffman secure the perimeter, treating it as a hostage situation, as Urich also arrives at the scene. He tries to get the information about what is going on from the detectives, but Blake tells him to stay out of it.
Wesley reports that the Masked Man is holed up with Ranskahov and Sullivan, while Blake and Hoffman are on site, awaiting orders. Fisk gives Wesley a go to take the building, but Urich's involvement turns out to be a complication, as he is capable to connect the dots to the Union Allied Construction scandal. Fisk decides to turn the complication in his favor and orders Wesley to reach out to all of their contacts in the media, so everybody would see what was about to happen.
With the police surrounding the building and Sullivan neutralized, the Masked Man turns to Ranskahov who regains his consciousness. Ranskahov tells him that he and Anatoly were approached by Wesley who complimented their business and invited them to be a part of Fisk's organization. Fisk offered them a protection from the police, a political support, and an access to Gao's heroin operation. The Masked Man demands names, to which Ranskahov tells him that the only name that matters is the man who runs Fisk's finances. However, instead of telling him the name, Ranskahov attacks the Masked Man and in their struggle, both of them fall three floors down.
Meanwhile, the hostages situation continues to escalate and the media gathers at the scene to report what was happening. Page keeps trying to reach out to Murdock and see if he is okay, but does not get a response from him. Nelson tries to calm her down and not jump to any conclusions, while Page is worried about what might happened with the blind man in a warzone. Nelson tries to stand up and go look for him, saying that he is the closest Murdock has to a family, and he would do the same for Nelson. Page immediately stops him, telling that while it is admirable, he must stay at the hospital and recoiver.
The Masked Man recovers from their scuffle and finds out that Ranskahov's heart is giving up, but he promptly resuscitates him. The ESU arrives at the scene, and while the Masked Man tries to find a way out, he hears Fisk's voice from Sullivan's comms. Fisk talks to the vigilante, telling him that he is trying to save the city just like him but in a way that matters, dismissing the casualties as unfortunate but necessary. The Masked Man threatens to find Fisk and make him pay, but he says that it will not happen, although Fisk admires his conviction. Fisk then tells him that he is planning to pin all bombings and killings on the Masked Man, but also offers him a way out if he kills Ranskahov.
The vigilante promptly refuses, taking Fisk's offer as a confirmation of how valuable Rankahov and what he knows is. Fisk remarks that the Masked Man's part has come to an end, adding that the city will never view him as a hero, before he gives Wesley an order. The ESU Sniper on Fisk's payroll opens fire at the police officers, killing some of them and wounding Blake, causing a chaos. Fisk tells the Masked Man that he did what he was forced to do before ending their conversation. Wesley then leaks the footage to the media that frames the Masked Man as a perpetrator. Temple calls the Masked Man, who tells her that Fisk is behind everything, while the ESU prepares to storm the building.
He tells Temple that she was right about him and tells her to take her of herself if they do not get another chance to talk, before hanging up. The ESU squad enters the building and kills Sullivan, while Ranskahov and the Masked Man manage to make it to access tunnels. The Masked Man helps Ranskahov walk through and fights off the ESU officers, as Ranskahov takes a rifle and tells the vigilante that he is staying. Ranskahov tells him that Fisk is way too powerful and killing him as the only way to stop him, something that the Masked Man is unable to do. He does not believe in the Masked Man's ideals but concludes that he is the only person who has a shot at Fisk, giving him the name of Leland Owlsley. The Masked Man escapes from the tunnels, while Ranskahov stays behind to give him enough time to make it and dies to the ESU officers.
