- "Do you think Fisk had something to do with this?"
"Speak of the devil." - ―Karen Page and Foggy Nelson
Speak of the Devil is the ninth episode of the first season of the television series Daredevil.
Synopsis[]
When Fisk gains the upper hand, the goal to destroy him becomes even more difficult, while Daredevil faces his own demons.
Plot[]
Matt Murdock visits the Clinton Church and meets with Paul Lantom, asking Lantom if he believes in the Devil as a true evil among them. Lantom says that he used to be more skeptical and tells Murdock a story about his past from when he was in Rwanda, where he became acquintated with Gahiji, an honest and respected leader, who was admired by the whole village. When the Rwandan genocide took place, the villagers and the militia were hesitant to go against Gahiji, so he was approached by the militia commander. The commander talked to Gahiji for hours before butchering him and his family, and Lantom says that he saw the Devil in that man. Murdock asks if there was a chance to stop the Devil once and for all, would he do that, which confuses Lantom.
Ben Urich meets with Karen Page and Foggy Nelson, telling them that after Wilson Fisk's sudden press conference, he is now seen as a revered figure by the public. Nelson and Page still insist that they must act, despite Urich's skepticism, before Murdock joins them. Urich tells them all that he was approached by the Masked Man, who told him that he was framed for the shootings and provided Urich with the information about Fisk's operations. Discussing their potential plan, Urich and Murdock conclude that they need to find the connection from Westmeyer-Holt Contracting to Confederated Global Investments, which should let them to Fisk.
James Wesley reports to Fisk about his current operations and schedule for the day, before Fisk inquires about the whereabouts of Carl Hoffman and Wesley says that after killing Christian Blake, Hoffman disappered. Talking about the Masked Man, Wesley suggests that he might have given up due to the police hunting for him, but Fisk is certain that he is just choosing his next target. Fisk gets confronted by Nobu Yoshioka, as the city block he needed was still unavailable, so Fisk points out that the situation has become complicated. Yoshioka insists that his organization is in need of a very specific city block, so Fisk suggests sending a specialist after the Masked Man, although he needs to be lured out first.
As Nelson and Murdock continue their investigation, Nelson tells them that Armand Tully is a dead end, due to the record tamperings. They get visited by Elena Cardenas, who tells them that the offer to the tenants for their building was doubled, and now Cardenas' neighbors are considering it. Page is frustrated that Fisk keeps playing them around.
Murdock decides to keep digging and goes to the Scene Contempo Gallery, where he approaches Vanessa Marianna. After brief discussion about art, Murdock asks Marianna about the man in her life, so she introduces him to Fisk, who also comes to the gallery. Murdock briefly speaks to Fisk, who says that despite their positions, his goal is to improve the city, before Murdock abruptly leaves.
Murdock comes to the church and speaks to Lantom again, saying that the person whom he considers the Devil has someone who loves him and they would miss him if something happens to them. Murdock is reminded that if he takes his life, his sould would be damned, but if he is left to live, he will continue to hurt people. Lantom tells Murdock that another man's evil does not make one good and nothing can justify taking a life, as doing so will only bring the worse to him. Murdock insists that the righteous men have a duty to stand up to evil, but Lantom says that Murdock himself does not want to kill and simply searched for reasons not to do that.
Returning to the office, Page tells Murdock that the repairmen who attacked her were identified as Joseph Pike and Stewart Schmidt, however, they are also a dead end. Nelson and Page then show Murdock the "Nelson and Murdock" placard but the brief moment of joy gets interrupted by the news of Cardenas being murdered.
The three go to the precinct and identify her body before they go to Josie's Bar to have a wake and arrange for her funeral. Murdock listens to the news of Fisk's interview about Cardenas' death, during which he expresses sorrow, but Murdock is convinced that Fisk had her killed to finish the tenement deal.
Guided by his rage, Murdock decides to deal with Fisk once and for all, so he hunts for Junkie Jake, the drug addict who murdered Cardenas.
After a beatup, he tells the Masked Man that he met with his employers at Pier 81 Warehouse.
However, when the Masked Man comes, Fisk is not present. He realizes that it was the trap, as Yoshioka in the ninja outfit confronts him, so the two clash in the duel. Yoshioka injures the Masked Man badly but before he goes for the kill, the Masked Man ignites the flammable liquid that immersed Yoshioka during the duel and sets him ablaze. An exhausted and bleeding vigilante then gets approached by Fisk, who explains that it was all staged, although he wanted the two of them to kill each other. The Masked Man tells Fisk that he will kill him, but he is no condition to fight, so Fisk mercilesly beats him. Fisk then gives Wesley an order to finish the Masked Man, but he manages to escape through the river.
Barely alive, the Masked Man returns to his apartment, however, Nelson comes there to speak to his best friend. Knocking on the door, Nelson hears a crash and enters the apartment, where he finds an injured Masked Man lying on the floor. Nelson then call 911, however, he unmasks the vigilante and to his horror, he realizes that the Masked Man was actually Matt Murdock.
