"I left my son without a father. And this is what he does with his life. If I go back inside, it won't be long until he's sharin' a cell with me or worse."
―Jasper Evans[src]

Jasper Evans was a Ryker's Island inmate who was hired by Wilson Fisk to participate in a plan to leave the prison, allowing Evans to gain his freedom. However, Evans was approached by Karen Page who had desired to use Evans' confession to bring down Fisk's entire criminal empire. Although Evans agreed to help Page, before he could make a statement to the New York Bulletin, he was assassinated by "Daredevil".

Biography[]

Criminal Life[]

Sent to Ryker's Island[]

"Locked up in '91 on a couple of murder, two counts. Seems he walked into a convenience store, got talked to the wrong way, ended up shooting an honest cashier and a sweet old granny picking up her Sunday Powerball ticket."

Originally working as a janitor, Jasper Evans became a drug addict and was charged with drug possession several times. In 1991, Evans walked into a convenience store where he accidentally shot and killed a cashier and an old woman who was an unfortunate witness. Evans was charged with two murders and imprisoned in Ryker's Island, leaving his son Elton to grow up without a father.[3]

Hired by Wilson Fisk[]

"The guy sliced him up just good enough to convince the feds."
"Of course. This guy, he's a lifer? If he was bribed, does that mean he's still alive?"
"Better than alive. Free."

During his sentence at Ryker's Island, Evans was approached by Wilson Fisk who offered him a chance to get out of the jail, in exchange for help. As Evans accepted the offer, he was ordered by Fisk to stage an assassination attempt on him, to convince the FBI that his life is in danger, while he is imprisoned. Following the FBI's raid on the Albanian Syndicate, both Evans and Fisk went to the prison gym, and while Fisk was working out, Evans assisted him. Evans then drew a shiv and plunged it into Fisk's stomach, making sure that the wound was non-fatal, but convincing enough, screaming that Fisk was a snitch so everyone in the gym could hear him.

However, in response, Fisk lost his temper and threw Evans away, preparing to kill him in retaliation, despite their initial plan. Evans got trapped underneath the barbell Fisk was using and got kicked in the head, before Fisk almost struck him with a weight. Terrified, Evans started crying and begging for his life, until Fisk recalled their plan and spared Evans' life. Afterwards, the prison guards made it to the gym, and while Fisk was taken to the infirmary, Evans was put in solitary confinement.[4] As Fisk's plan worked and the FBI relocated him to the Presidential Hotel, he arranged Riggle to sign the false paperwork and liberate Evans out of the prison, according to their deal.[5]

Found by Karen Page[]

"If Fisk stays out of prison, a lot of innocent people are gonna die. So you can either tell my paper the truth and we let you and your son run far away, or you can go back to prison and I print the story like you talked anyway."
"You would lie and get us both killed?"
"Your choice."
Karen Page and Jasper Evans[src]

Getting out of Ryker's Island, Evans reunited with his mother and his son, residing at the drug den in New York City. One day, Evans found out that Karen Page came to find him, so he told everyone to leave and tried to attack Page with the help of Elton and other addicts. However, he was stopped by Daredevil who subdued Elton and the addicts before knocking Evans out. Daredevil gave Evans two options, either he testifies about his role in Wilson Fisk's plan to get out of the jail, or he tips the FBI about him, and Fisk recognizes him as a liability and gets him killed.

Evans replied that he cannot go against Fisk, saying that he will kill Elton if he talks. He told Daredevil and Page that his life in the neighborhood used to be good, until he was arrested and his son was left to grow without a father, which resulted in his addiction. Evans was afraid that if he gets back to the prison, Elton might follow in his footsteps and get convicted as well. However, Page told him that Fisk's presence puts a lot of innocent people in danger, so he either officially testifies and runs away with his son, or New York Bulletin publishes his story as it is, ignoring Evans' pleas that her lie will get them both killed.[6]

Attack on the Bulletin[]

"What the hell's going on?"

Evans had no choice but to accept Karen Page's conditions, so he was brought to the New York Bulletin Building and was presented to Mitchell Ellison. When Ellison asked why did Page arrange the meeting, Evans confirmed that he attacked Wilson Fisk in Ryker's Island under his orders, so he could get out of the jail. Foggy Nelson then arranged a meeting with the FBI, so they could hear Evans' testimony before taking Matt Murdock under the custody.

Page and Ellison set up a camera to officially record Evans' testimony and use it to publish an article to expose Fisk, however, before they could proceed, the lights at the building went off. Afraid that something was going on, both Evans and Ellison stayed behind Page in case of the danger, as she had a gun, before they were joined by Nelson. Soon after, the man in Daredevil's Suit broke through the barricade and entered the office, incapacitating both Page and Nelson and injuring Ellison. Evans could only stood in horror and watch how "Daredevil" picked up Page's gun and used it to shoot him in the head.[6]

Personality[]

"Look at this place. I grew up here. We had a good life before the neighborhood went down and I got myself put away."
―Jasper Evans to Daredevil[src]

Despite being a drug addict and a murder, Jasper Evans was a man who deeply cared about his son Elton and wanted a better life for him. He was afraid that Elton might follow his footsteps without the father, so he was desperate to get out of prison, which allowed him to be manipulated by Wilson Fisk. Evans was deeply afraid of what Fisk might do with his son if he tries to cross him but left with no other choice, Evans agreed to testify against Fisk to take him down for good, although it did not went through.
