The Path of the Righteous is the eleventh episode of the first season of the television series Daredevil.
Synopsis[]
Fisk and Murdock wrestle with the consequences of their chosen paths, while Ben and Karen get closer to Fisk's true past.
Plot[]
Wilson Fisk hastily brings Vanessa Marianna to a nearest Metro-General Hospital following a poisoning at the fundraiser event. The doctors tend to her but Fisk is not allowed to an operating room, so he waits outside, horrified that he let the woman he loves become a target.
Karen Page meets with Matt Murdock, concerned about his injuries and suspecting that Fisk could have been involved somehow, but Murdock tells her not to worry about that. Page then tells Murdock about her and Ben Urich's findings, that Marlene Vistain is still alive despite Fisk's false background claiming his mother to be dead. Murdock is worried that she let herself and Urich get noticed by Fisk's men, but Page notes that he never responded to her calls and she could not discuss it. Murdock points out that even though they know that Fisk murdered his Father, he was a minor so he would not be indicted, but Page insists that this is an inconsistency and people will have to look closer into Fisk's background.
Page then brings up Foggy Nelson and how things became sour between him and Murdock but he does not explain anything and only says that everything is his fault. Meanwhile, Nelson spends the night with Marci Stahl, still distraught at what happened between him and Murdock.
Leland Owlsley talks to James Wesley about Fisk's current state of mind and says that he is unfit to run their operations like this. He insists that Fisk was a target of the poisoning and if Marianna was affected, their whole organization might be in danger so they need to handle the important matters. Wesley suspects Madame Gao to be involved, but Owlsley replies that it is unlikely and instead points at Nobu Yoshioka's men. Wesley doubts that they had a hand in the attack, as they received the city block they wanted and are under impression that their leader was killed by the Masked Man. Wesley then gets informed that other guests that drank the champagne died but he is still convinced that Marianna can make it, asking Owlsley to see Gao and make sure that they are still on the same side.
Claire Temple comes to fix up Murdock's stitches, suggesting that he should get a body armor if he keeps getting into similar fights. He recalls that during his brawl with Fisk, he sliced his jacket and felt a durable, flexible armor underneath the fiber, which he found interesting. Temple then tells Murdock that she will be leaving New York City for a while and expresses her concern that one day, Murdock would not return from his fight. Murdock insists that the city will never be safe with men like Fisk around, to which Temple points out that if he continues his fight as a matryr, he would eventually met similar end.
Page meets with Urich and apologizes for lying about Saint Bénézet Retirement Care, as he was still upset and thought she just pretended to care about his wife. Page says she was afraid that Urich would not go with her if he knew the truth, insisting that bringing Fisk down would save a lot of lives. She asks Urich to write the story on what Vistain told them, but Fisk tells her that even if he does, Fisk would easily turn this around and they would not achieve anything. He then tells her about the the poisoning at Fisk's fundraiser that he is working to keep in secret, saying that since Fisk made himself public, he has made enough enemies that want to tear him down.
Waiting to Marinna to recover, Fisk gets more and more worried that she might die, so Wesley comforts him and assures him that she will pull through. As Wesley mentions that Yoshioka's men might be responsible, Fisk recalls what Gao told him, if he does not chooses a path to follow, someone would choose it for him. Fisk tells Wesley that those responsible must be found so he could exact his revenge and also decides to move Marianna away to safer place when she recovers, even though she would not want that. He asks Wesley to handle the arrangements on his own, without Owlsley's involvement, and expresses his gratitude for everything Wesley has done for him.
Murdock attends Clinton Church and speaks to Paul Lantom about what he was planning to do, confessing that even though he did not kill the man he targeted, he still tried to do that. Lantom then admits that he knows Murdock's secret, and as they bring up the accident that blinded Murdock, he says that he believed it to be a part of God's plan. Murdock asks if that was the case, why did God put Devil in him, and Lantom suggests that Devil's existence is a reminder for all men to tread the righteous path. Murdock then meditates and recovers from his fight with Yoshioka, before donning his mask and going after Turk Barrett. He chases Barrett down and forces him to tell about Fisk's body armor and who made it for him.
Fisk remains by Marianna's bed, being told that there might be complications with her condition, and asks Wesley to call back his mother and see what she needs. Owlsley then comes back after speaking with Gao, saying that she is on their side, while also insisting that Fisk needs to get his mind back into their business before it is too late. Wesley tells him that this is not an approriate time for this, but Owlsley says that Marianna's poisoning is unlikely to be their last problem, before leaving. Wesley then calls Vistain and asks her about what she needed from Fisk and finds out about her recent meeting with Page and Urich.
The Masked Man sneaks inside Melvin Potter's workshop, where he confronts the man himself and asks if he is working for Fisk. Potter keeps repeating that he should not be there before attacking the Masked Man, but fails to take him out. Potter cries that if Fisk finds out that he let the Masked Man in, he would hurt Betsy Beatty, as he made it clear that no one can talk to Potter without his permission. The Masked Man says that he can and will bring Fisk down, so he would not be able to hurt anybody, before asking Potter to make a special armor that could become his symbol.
Page finds Nelson drinking at Josie's Bar, but he also says that Vistain's story of Fisk killing his father as a child would hardly help them with anything. As Page says that Murdock told her the same, she asks Nelson about what happened between the two of them, but Nelson is unable to tell her the truth. She then tells Nelson that Elena Cardenas' apartment is already getting teared down for a renovation project, saying that he and Murdock need to get themselves together and fight for Hell's Kitchen before it is too late. On her way home, Page tries to call Murdock and thanks Urich for everything he had done, but gets kidnapped before reaching her apartment.
Sitting beside Marianna's bed, Fisk says that he never was a religious person and cannot pray for her, but promises that people who hurt her will suffer.
Page wakes up at a secluded location, being kidnapped Wesley, who says that they sincerely wanted to spare Page but she made a choice to keep digging. He talks to Page about their city and Fisk, before bringing up Vistain who somehow managed to remember Page enough to tell Wesley about her visit. Page tells Wesley to kill her already but he says that it was never his intention and he only wanted to offer her a job. He instructs Page to convince Urich and everybody else to back down from investigating Fisk, but she adamantly refuses. Wesley then warns her that if so, Urich, Murdock, Nelson and everybody she ever cared for will die and she will witness it before she dies as well. Wesley then gets distracted by a call from Fisk, which allows Page to get a hold of his gun and shoot him dead, before running away in terror.
