I didn't think the result would affect me as much as it did. I was half-expecting it. I've learned recently not to let my expectations get the better of me, not to let hope distort my view of reality; it's all about balance after all. But I'm really, really in my head about it.
A big part of it is the reaction to the news. I've seen so many people I care about genuinely fearful for their lives and their rights. I keep thinking about the trans community, already struggling with the likes of JK Rowling and Kemi Badenoch trying to invalidate them. And now one of those people is the president, again. What kind of message are the voters sending?
I'll tell you, because they've been spouting it from their slack-jaws ever since their self-proclaimed sweet victory. They want comfort, not for anyone else, but themselves. They want to say and do whatever they like without concern for the consequences. They want to take what they see as theirs and anyone on the outside of their precious airtight suburbia can fuck off and get their own. Transgender people, gays, lesbians, people of colour? Anyone who doesn't look or think like them? Well that's a spectrum, and when you think exclusively in extremes, you can't rest comfortably on a spectrum. Only in a deep pit.
Millions and millions of people chose hatred today, and I don't know how I can live amongst them without looking over my shoulder every moment.
