Let'sGetReel’s review published on Letterboxd:
So after looking through the Oscar nominations a few times I thought I’d share my thoughts on them. At first I wasn’t sure if I should post this as a Paint Drying review or on the 1940 cavalcade of the academy awards like other people have been doing but I think this works.
- Might as well get the controversial one out of the way first: I love John Williams and even enjoyed Dial of Destiny’s score but they really nominated it over Across the Spider-Verse and Boy and the Heron?
-I was extremely close with my best picture predictions. Only one I didn’t get right was The Iron Claw getting nominated.
- Glad to see Godzilla Minus One get recognition for its visual effects even if I think it deserved more nominations than just one.
-The best original song nominations were good but I’m surprised The Fire Inside was nominated. It wasn’t awful but it didn’t feel like anything special to me.
-Loved seeing Anatomy of a Fall getting so many nominations.
-I was sure Past Lives would get snubbed considering how it didn’t get as much attention as some other big contenders this year so it was so immensely satisfying seeing it get a best picture nomination.
-Kind of surprised Greta Gerwig didn’t get a best directing nomination.
-Everyone’s talking about how Margot Robbie was snubbed but I also think Greta Lee deserved some recognition in that category.
-Shocked Nimona got a nomination over Suzume and TMNT (I also heard a lot about The First Slam Dunk but I haven’t seen it). Didn't mind the fact that it was nominated though considering Boy and the Heron and Spider-verse are more likely to win
-Spiderverse and Boy and the Heron definitely deserved more recognition then just best animated feature
-Oppenheimer sweep is real and I’m all here for it
-Even though I only enjoyed the first half of Maestro I think it’s nominations in the technical categories were justified
-I have a lot of documentaries and short films to catch up on
-Killers of the Flower Moon better win something
-I’m even more excited to check out Poor Things, Zone of Interest, and American Fiction now
-Ferrari was snubbed
So yeah, those are my thoughts on the Oscar nominations right now.
While I'm writing a paint drying update I might as well announce after days of editing my Top 15 Best of the Year video is now out on YouTube! Normally I don’t directly promote my videos on here but I’m very proud with how this one came out.
