Beetlejuice Beetlejuice is a sequel that’s been a long time coming. I can’t think of another film that was in development hell longer. Originally titled Beetlejuice in Love and slated for release in 1991, the project never found its footing and would eventually be rewritten and get a new treatment titled Beetlejuice Goes Hawaiian, before being abandoned altogether. Then for the next 30 years, silence.
It is apparent on screen that Tim Burton has rediscovered his passion for filmmaking; his inventive filmmaking techniques and over-working imagination really come through in this sequel. After over a decade, the Tim Burton we know and fell in love with is back. Beetlejuice Beetlejuice isn’t perfect, and it’s not as well-written as the original, but man did I have fun watching this.
At times, it does seem a tad overstuffed with characters and subplots, with Monica Bellucci’s character Delores being the biggest offender. The first act suffers the most from weaker writing, but once the family returns to Winter River, it is off to the races.
Catherine O’Hara and Michael Keaton are the standouts here, to no one’s surprise. Burton’s directing, Elfman’s score, and the production design are all top-fucking-notch. Perhaps some of the best I’ve seen in quite awhile.
If you love the first film and are a big fan of both it and Tim Burton, I recommend seeing this one. It was never going to reach the heights of that first film, but if you go in understanding that, you’ll be in for a treat.
