Beetlejuice Beetlejuice

Beetlejuice Beetlejuice

Betelgeuse, Betelgeuse, Betelgeuse!

Beetlejuice Beetlejuice does a lot of things right for fans of both Beetlejuice and horror films in general. However, the way certain things looked in the 1988 classic, looked exactly the same within the film 36 years later. That should make us old folks giddy with excitement, but I don’t see it translating as well to the younger crowd or even the casual moviegoer.

Does that matter? Probably not. At least not for my personal enjoyment. I did not expect half of the awesome practical effects and extreme silliness that went on in this film.

I won’t go as far as to say this is a perfect movie, because it’s not. No film ever is. I found the film, like most modern sequels, wanting to do more than it should. Almost like the film has ADHD to keep the interest of viewers with ADHD. I don necessarily believe that every little thing needs to be perfectly lined up and explained to death in order to happen in a film. Sometimes things can be done in certain worlds that only exist on screen.

I still expect this film to make a decent box office run, given its cult status in Halloween cinema. I think most people are wondering if there will ever be a Beetlejuice Beetlejuice Beetlejuice? Truthfully, I don’t think so, nor did I think this film should have been made, but since there was one, I went and enjoyed exactly what it was. An overly weird, sometimes random, Beetlejuice film, that felt like a true sequel to the original film.

As I touched on slightly above, this film won’t be for everyone, and i kind of love that. Tim Burton and crew said if we are going to do this, we are going to do this right. It’s going to be strange and sometimes completely mad. It’s going to be over the top and it’s going to look (almost) just like it did in 1988.

Regardless of how anyone feels about this film or another sequel, I think everyone can agree, at the age of 73, Michael Keaton has been having an absolute blast lately and it’s been so fun to watch.
