🔥 4 / 5 🔥 — Oppenheimer is equal parts magnificent and conflicting, amazing and slightly disappointing. It's a masterpiece that left me wanting a little more.
Wow! And also, eh… It's so difficult to capture how this movie hit me. On the one hand, it's everything we have come to expect from Christopher Nolan's typical brilliance: stunning visuals, an amazing score, and intriguing new approaches to storytelling. But on the other hand, I left the theater saying, "Oh… ok." Don't get me wrong, it's incredible, but so many things keep me from being entirely impressed. Despite the excellent performances by each actor, every character felt significantly one-dimensional, lacking a compelling arc or development throughout the film. These characters remain unchanged, ending much as they began, almost reduced to a simplistic "lover #1" or "mean guy #3". Nolan's non-linear narrative fascinates but, at times, seems overly complicated, making it difficult to follow what was happening. I also wish the movie delved deeper into the pressure of the arms race with Germany and the creation of the atomic bomb. The bomb sequence, which was the most exciting and engaging part of the film, only occupied about an hour of the 3-hour runtime. Once again, Oppenheimer is a must-see film and a stunning spectacle, but it's probably not one I will want to see again.
