Oppenheimer shook me, floored me, disturbed me, and left me speechless in a way no other film has before. There is no better sentence to describe this film than terrifyingly beautiful.
It’s visually striking in every regard but manages to turn its stunning achievements in vfx into something purely horrifying that you can’t look away from.
Cillian Murphy and Robert Downey Jr. give career defining performances, the cinematography is some of the best put to film, the score is enthralling and haunting all at once, and the framing device brings a whole new perspective to what you’re watching and makes you a want to reflect on every scene, event, and motive even though you never want to feel what they put you through the first time ever again.
This all leads to a final scene that brought back all those disturbing thoughts this film scarred you with while ending on a final line of dialogue that makes you feel powerless over the unspeakable revelations in these final shots.
Needless to say, Oppenheimer not only lived up to my expectations, but surpassed them in ways I couldn’t have dreamed of. It’s going to take some time for me to process just how this movie impacted me as a filmmaking accomplishment and an experience.
Just know that this may be Christopher Nolan’s best film and the most striking film of the year.
It’s absolutely one of those films everyone should see before the year ends, but nothing will be able to prepare you for it.
