Finally we’ve gotten the first great movie of 2023. It’s early but this may be the best biopic I’ve ever seen. Only Nolan can take 3 hours to give you what looks and feels like a biopic but is also unexpectedly a Cold War thriller and it absolutely works. Tense and thrilling without any “action”, it’s as well paced as a movie of its length can be.
Oppenheimer boasts a ridiculously stacked cast (looking at you, former NY Ranger Sean Avery). Seeing so many award winning actors finding their way into such minor roles shows the respect Hollywood has for Nolan. Kind of wild that Cillian Murphy can be killing it for 20+ years but this may be his big “breakthrough” role. Oscar noms coming for him as well as many technical aspects of the film. Not really buying into the Robert Downey Jr award buzz, as it’s gonna take more than not being Iron Man to take this home.
Though I doubt we will get more of this type of film from Nolan, we have to celebrate how good this was. As the rare Nolan fan who isn’t a Batman fanboy, this guy does not miss.
