Might seem like a weird criticism of this type of horror movie, but I just found this so unpleasant?? The first half I was thinking “Oy, very r/atheism.” By the second half I realized that was by design, but that doesn’t change the fact that watching HERETIC means suffering through nearly 2 hours of r/atheism bullshit.
I will say they GOT me with the “why aren’t there more Jews” bit because when Hugh Grant first asked the question, I (a Jew) kept yelling “BECAUSE WE DON’T PROSELYTIZE!!!” at the screen, and then when Sophie Thatcher came back with “weird how you didn’t mention the Holocaust???” I was like “Oh shit. I uh, I really should have thought of that myself. Right off the bat. Oh.”
Anyway… Chloe East phenomenal. Weirdly small amount of Topher Grace. Loved the architecture and the thought that went into designing the house. I just overall kind of wanted it to be over for most of the runtime.

]]>[Writing this review 3 weeks late, you’ll see why]
Walked by the guy who played Forbes on my way into a Halloween party this weekend and since I’m not familiar with his work but grew up in Hollywood, I found myself falling into the classic trap of assuming I recognize someone from elementary school or whatever instead of The Screen. As he passed I said “Wait! You look familiar. Where do I know you from?” and the girl with him said “𝓨𝓸𝓾𝓻 𝓭𝓻𝓮𝓪𝓶𝓼, 𝓹𝓮𝓻𝓱𝓪𝓹𝓼?”
Anyway this movie is a rollicking good time!!! Very fun!!! Maybe it was all a dream I had but it was a certified blast!!! Seriously though I’m a sucker for anything where actors get to play each other and cool camerawork and fun editing and this had it all.

]]>Asked Twitter for movies that burn a hole through your soul. Movies that eat your bones and turn your skeleton hollow and low opacity. Movies that leak rot past the screen’s edges. Black mold of the soul.
Partially inspired by @brofromanother’s tweet asking for examples of “truly evil movies that feel like they're channeling something awful into the world” as well as a bit of @Seamus_Malek’s tweet about what he calls “Negative Escapism.” But I might make that a separate list, because these aren’t just bleak, they’re a specific brand of spirit devouring, mood spoiling, haunting movies that will follow you for weeks, months, years after you watch, stalking the corners of your mind like a venomous specter. Lingering almost as if in wait, but for what?

]]>Holding room for movies I plan to add to my Visually Insane list! This was a private list, but I saw lots of comments from people wondering if a certain movie they recommended was ever going to be added and even though I doubt anyone will take the time to look at this and check (since they don’t even check the original list before asking me to add things…) I figured making this public couldn’t hurt.
It takes a long time to find the right poster and placement for a film in the main list, so sometimes stuff gets stuck here in list limbo for a while! Nobody is reading this, congrats if you did though haha. Have a freaky & vibrant day.
Update: wow people actually are reading this?? I did not expect that! Y’all are lovely.

]]>Trying to expand my horror watches know that I can handle scary stuff so I asked Twitter for the scariest movie they’ve ever seen and I’m taking recs here too!
Here’s an ongoing “scared me but I loved it” list, very vaguely ranked (stuff I liked most at the top) so you can get a sense of what I like and also are able to recommend NEW stuff!
Getting a little deeper into it: “Horror” to me means anything scary. So thrillers MORE than welcome. I’m waaay more into psychological than bloody, but I can handle and am open to bloody! Seeing viscera, people cut open, that’s fine. I can eat an egg salad sandwich while watching somebody get chopped to bits. But I still have a hard time with certain kinds of grosscreepy monster/creature faces sometimes— if there’s, say, rotten flesh and an artificially wide smile and like, fang eyes, I’m probably gonna be in a bit of trouble. I watched The Haunting of Hill House recently for the first time because I thought I might be ready, and I was, but it was definitely near the (ever expanding) edge of what I can handle. But it was so worth it because WHAT A STORY!!!!!
The reason I asked about scariest ever is that it feels like a great way to hone in on really AFFECTING stuff as I find my footing / taste place in the genre. I’m always interested in movies that stick with you, and the horror I’ve loved the most stuck with me not because I was scared for a week afterwards but because it just like got into my bones and poked at parts of my brain I’m not used to movies prodding? For example: CURE instantly became one of my all time favorite movies because the eeriness seeped into my pores and ate my spirit and I think that rocks!

“What are good movies to watch when you’re exhausted but still want to be immersed? I don’t mean a smooth brain movie (low-tier romcom etc), I mean specifically good for a weird, frazzled headspace. Can’t be too complex plot-wise but can still have a lot going on (or not)!”

These are mostly explicitly gay, but honestly how in the hell could I NOT include gay-and-criminal-as-hell masterpieces like Point Break or (my personal choice) Rope?? ROPE IS GAY. HAROLD, THEY’RE LESBIANS.
Some movies have notes about why they’re on the list. Some are serious some are silly. Enjoy!

]]>Asked Twitter “What’s the most visually insane movie you’ve ever seen?” Adding your answers!
Am I missing your favorite hallucinogenic, meditative, harrowing, dreamy, or chaotic visual feast? Comment here (with year and/or director please!) and I’ll include your recs in the list— I have no criteria besides “Is it on Letterboxd?” If I see em, I’ll add em! Who do you think I am? The Grand Arbiter of Insanity???
A small request: before commenting with a rec, PLEASE GO TO THAT MOVIE’S PAGE AND CHECK IF IT’S ALREADY ON HERE (it should show up under “popular lists” at the bottom). I know it’s a slog to manually scroll the list itself, so I don’t blame people for recommending things that are already on here, but someone in the comments suggested this workaround and it’s surprisingly simple!
If you recommended a movie and you’re wondering why it’s still not on this list, check out the 🪭VISUALLY INSANE WAITING ROOM🦜 where I put all the movies I’m working on adding!

Btw “Wife” and “dead” are honestly pretty flexible as long as the gist of the trope is present. Okay, wife more flexible than dead, but you get what I mean. (Sheet NOT flexible!!!) Answers go here! Most are specifically the “was it a fever dream” vibe/genre (like Return to Oz), others are movies people had that experience with, AKA not necessarily a scary kid movie —or a kid movie at all— but if you imagine having seen it as a kid, you know it would have fucked you up (like Jacob’s Ladder).
