There is little that A Wounded Fawn offers in the way of anything new or interesting.
The opening sequence of Travis Stevens third flick starts strong with an intense auction and subsequent mayhem but then quickly devolves into a Tarantino grindhouse/Raimi Evil Dead II mash-up of sorts but not in a good way. Acting is stiff and wooden and at times feels like they went with the first take. A situation is what we get in place of a non-existent story and the effects are sub par at best. There are however some nice shots and the use of color and overall look of the film is done well. Then we’re left with a scene that plays out over the credits which sums up what the movie turned into. Ridiculousness.
While the craftsmanship is there, it’s better to spend your time on a Ti West or a Pascal Laugier movie instead.

Cool fact: In the first act there’s a shot of waving red flags; they’re actually intended for you, the viewer, so you can remember the exact point where the movie goes downhill.
proof that just about anything looks better shot on 16mm; the type of contemporary horror work that I appreciate most - reverential of the past yet not reliant on nostalgia, just earnest (and weird) genre work that is clearly made by people who give a shit about the legacy of the genre and also just making something that looks really, really cool (s/o to those vibrant "lava lamp" shots that I really want to see on a big screen)
Starts off in the realm of a misogynistic serial killer home invasion thriller and eventually unfurls into a much weirder, slower, lo-fi supernatural revenge movie with some very cheap, 70s 16mm experimental community theater aesthetics that kind of work in its favor. Don't think it needed those final 5 minutes to say out loud what the movie was already saying just fine in its horror sequences but ends on a pretty good gore gag right after so I'm not gonna complain too much.
Man I loved every hair, scratch and fleck of dust in the 16mm gate, made dawn feel more like A forgotten gem from the late 70’s where Greek mythology mixed into a gialli just made sense.
Great style of 70’s 3M blood.
Lind and Ruben have NO chemistry (and that’s a compliment).
Travis always seems to know the right final shot.
A stylish, bloody, surreal, phantasmagorical, uniquely enchanting cat-and-mouse horror thriller inspired by Greek mythology. This is without a doubt Travis Stevens' best work to date. People compare this with Hulu's Fresh since both films shares the same romantic-getaway-becomes-sinister premise, but I gotta be honest, this thing is on another level. It's a lot more stylish and actually feels like a horror film. It plays up a constant sense of unease perfectly and isn't afraid to surprise. The amount of close ups and shots of dark forests really makes you feel confined and uneasy. I love Josh Ruben so much and he's simply fantastic in this. This would make a great double feature with Scare Me which is also on Shudder.

A Wounded Fawn is a bizarre, twisted, and audacious film that sadly buckles under its own delusions of grandeur. While I appreciate the absurdities and overall tonal whiplash of A Wounded Fawn, its descent into “WTF” land came off as unwarranted and underdeveloped. Normally weird, niche, and genre challenging films like this are my weakness, unfortunately A Wounded Fawn despite some great moments, just missed the mark for me.
The first 45 minutes or so had me hooked before we started to spin out. Think a mixture of Fresh and Red Eye. I was optimistic, but now it’ll leave me saying: Yeah! Yeah, it was good for a while.”

This was an interesting and fun little indie horror from the Tribeca Film Fest 2022. It opens at an auction with potential buyers bidding on a sculpture of some greek gods. If watching again, I would pay attention to the gods depicted on this statue because they definitely play a factor the rest of the story. One of our potential buyers, we find out is a predator as we witness at least one murder. When he lures another woman out to his cabin in the woods, fate (or fates perhaps?) takes a different turn. I love Travis Stevens' feminist horror brand, and I absolutely adore Girl on the Third Floor and Jakob's Wife, but A Wounded Fawn, Stevens' latest effort, is something I couldn't get behind. Visually it's arguably Stevens' career best, but story-wise it leaves a lot to be desired.
Still as feminist as it gets, A Wounded Fawn puts a twist on the familiar genre of male psycho killers, and on paper, it should hit all the spots. The retro-style aesthetics quickly put one in the right mood, and the cat-and-mouse game between the two leads is mildly intriguing and suspenseful, at least for the first half of the story. Then out of nowhere, Stevens decided to provide the story with an experimental twist, and all hell breaks loose in a truly horrible way. What a shame.

A Wounded Fawn is a real feast for the eyes with its 16mm presentation of fun costumes, makeup, & really gnarly practical effects. Add the backdrop of art dealing & collecting, & well, I guess we have a super-fkn artsy production.
I won't / can't argue the aesthetic, but I found this to be a chichi chore of self-satisying schtick. I get the impression that Travis Stevens crafted this thinking it's, like, some kind of breakthrough in the horror genre...&, Like, feminist or something. It's neither.
It looks great, & the performances are good, but...
It just had really bad breath.
