What if a man was so horny and good at magic tricks, he destroyed the geopolitical stability of an entire country?
Together with Christopher Nolan's The Prestige, The Illusionist makes for one of the two films released in 2006 that explored the world of stage magicians and even though it doesn't quite reach the creative heights of Nolan's thriller, it's a neatly crafted period drama that manages to leave its own enchantments on the viewers' emotions, thanks to its brilliant direction, smart setup & commendable performances.
Set in late 19th century Vienna, The Illusionist tells the story of Eisenheim, a renowned illusionist who uses his magical abilities to secure the love of a woman far above his social standing. I went into this with very little expectations, and I ended up enjoying it a lot. It’s no Prestige, but there’s a lot to like.
Everything that has to do with this film visually is great. It’s shot beautifully, and made to look like something from the early 1900’s, and the costumes and set design were both perfect for the aesthetic they were going for.
I don’t know if I’m blind to bad Giamatti acting, or if he really is just this consistently good in every role he’s in. But it literally seems like every movie of his I watch, he’s the one who’s always giving it 200% no matter how stupid the role is (see: Big Fat Liar). He always stands out in every movie he’s in, but like I said that could just be the incredible bias I have towards him. Although the bias I have is only as a result of him standing out, so I rest my case.

Yes, this film was released in the same year as The Prestige and even though they share similarities, they are quintessentially different. So for me the comparison so often made is null and void.
This film is a fantasy, a dream-like tale of love, passion and magic. It is set against a beautiful backdrop of late nineteenth century Vienna. It is shot in the most beautiful fashion, with great attention to detail in set and costume design and absolutely stunning cinematography. Burger and his team submerge this film in a dream-like glow that enhances the feel of watching a fantasized reality.

Everything from Rufus Sewell's character, who simply screamed alot. To Jessica Biels character who was nothing but tits and ass in a dress. To Nortons instantly forgettable performance (one of his very few), and Paul Giamatti's typecasting as quasi-douche.
Whatever the opposite word of "seemless" is, is the word i would use to describe the hair and makeup artistry. A very confusing cinematic choice for an opening scene that left me wondering if i was watching a cam-rip…
The narrative is well structured with enough mystery cues, making its illusional moments quite effective and all the more satisfying with its finale reveal, when all the pieces of puzzle fit in perfectly. The drama is further powered by the impressive performances of Edward Norton, Paul Giammati and Jessica Biel.
I'd love to say that movies like Neil Burger's The Illusionist don't come around too often. Normally that would be true, but unfortunately Christopher Nolan's The Prestige arrived in the same year and took most of this film's thunder. Nolan's film is very impressive, but this one for me just has it all and has remained in my top ten since the first time I saw it.

The film tips its hand a bit too much for the finale to truly surprise, but the rest is such a fun and intriguing ride that it hardly matters. A love triangle playing out within a woodsy liminal space between eerie reality and terrifying fantasy naturally had me thinking of The Legend of Sleepy Hollow, so much so that a Neil Burger adaptation now feels like a necessity.
Prestige > whatever this movie claims to be.. it's just some sappy stupid love story between two people who had no chemistry.. with a small side of magic that's really just CGI lol

I knew how this was gonna end, and like I was right, but what a ride. Though I was hoping that Giomatti ended up with Biel, he was way hotter than Norton or Sewell anyway.
A story about a magician that uses his parlor tricks to get with a noble lady under the nose of a politician, so the lesson here is that knowing magic will get you Jessica Biel, being a politician means a rightful bullet in the head.
And I think that is a lesson we all should take into the real world.
