  My (film noir-ish) reaction to the film-

  Night time.
  A little after 8:00 PM.

  merely duplicating the frames isn't sufficient to recontextualize Miller's frozen gravity, his temporal snapshots. all that's left is a fealty to his brutish, stupid masculinity. noir is more than black and white bleakness but Rodriguez never met an aesthetic he couldn't half-ass. nothing's worth doing if you can't greenscreen it in your garage.

  Second (forced) viewing and this is still utter dreck - shallow, mean-spirited, gimmicky, misogynistic, and obnoxiously edgy for the sake of it all the time without a break. It's the kind of laughably cartoonish crapsack worldbuilding that you'd expect from a 12-year-old trying to write "the darkest, most bloodiest story ever!", and said 12-year-old would still have had too much dignity to write Holy Terror. I don't even think the style saves this, because while it does occasionally manage to convey an impressive level of detail, it feels so (deliberately) artificial that it robs everything here of any kind of physicality…

  I’ve heard about how cool the style of this movie is and it lived up to those expectations. The over the top noir with only splashes of color occasionally was so cool. If only the story was just as good!

  There’s so much narration and it’s all just from brooding, gross men. What this movie lacks in color, it makes up for in misogyny. I feel like this movie was trying so hard to be edgy but instead it was like what if bad stuff happens to women over and over and over and over again!

  Every woman in this movie was either naked the whole time or got murdered or both. No thanks, I’ll pass on the big, macho men saving the poor defenseless women story.

  Also - unrelated, but I hope we get a live action Spider-Noir movie someday in this exact style.

  the really abrasive thing about frank miller is that, as an artist, he is incapable of not saying the quiet part out loud, which gives his work a refreshing honesty and also a reckless savagery -- he's the masculine id unleashed, the self-pitying paternalistic libertarian fantasy at its most silly, but also at its most paranoid, as if travis bickle was a real guy and channeled his murderous chivalry into authoring graphic novels instead of killing pimps.

  robert rodriguez has such fidelity to miller that one isn't quite sure what made him direct this in the first place -- it makes a problematic case for auteurism, in any event, but the blow-dried crispness of rodriguez's greenscreen mayhem is enough of…

  Upon first viewing, this is remarkably similar to Pulp Fiction. Here begin the similarities:
  1. Three tales of redemption.
  2. Three tales about macho males.
  3. Three tales, not in chronological order.
  4. One tale about Bruce Willis.
  5. At least one of the tales being directed by Quentin Tarantino.
  6. Seemingly un-killable characters (Vincent and Jules dodge death in Pulp Fiction, while Marv and Kevin take too much effort to successfully finish off).
  7. Excellent dance sequence.
  8. Very structurally similar, in terms of the prologue connecting up with the end, and little set-up vignettes after the credits have rolled.

  So, there you have it. I wasn't expecting to be comparing this to my favourite movie, but here I am. Still really bloody good, though (is it wrong of me to think every scene with Benecio Del Toro in is hilarious?).

  Calling Sin City a neo-noir just does not do it justice ... this Robert Rodriguez with Frank Miller jam is a SleekAss-Rebel-Noir!
