"of course, it helps to be genetically immune to every poison known to man, as I am. and immune to the toxin that is man himself, as I am." go off lesbian snake lady!!!!
almost undone by the generic third act, but still the best summer blockbuster of the year.
you made a real movie, jack.
actual character and pathos, terrific use of setting... Mangold has clearly done his homework / has a healthy reverence for the Japanese masters. don't ask me to unpack this, but beyond borrowing a few obvious shots from Ozu, i'd swear this film strongly echoes Naruse's gender politics and obsession with familial finances... deeply concerned with toppling post-war power structures (with the help of an american...), and damn if that bullet train sequence isn't the most arresting action of the summer. my condolences to the families of those henchmen.
weird time for comic book movies where they just sent wolverine to japan and that’s the concept
This movie has a worse identity crisis than its hairy title character. It starts as a gritty drama about a grief-stricken man with a couple nifty sword-on-claw fights. Then somewhere along the way it mutates into a generic CGI action movie with Jackman fighting a hissing snake lady and a giant metal robot. It needed to be either 60 percent smaller or 40 percent bigger. The Wolverine was okay when it came out. In a world where Logan exists, and explores a lot of the same ideas in a much more refined and less compromised way, it’s basically superfluous.
Yeah, the Viper character makes no sense. She spits acid? Who does she even work for? Why does she change into a sexy green outfit? And yeah, the climax is subpar especially considering how nicely everything has built up.
But still, talk about a blockbuster that has a terrific grasp of its characters, that keeps action intimate, that never gets too dark (as can be so easy with Wolverine) but is also never cheesy. The Japan setting is chock full of Yakuza and Shinto shrines and still it never feels like it's laying it on thick. The female leads (Tao Okamoto and Rila Fukushima, both models making their film debuts) are outstanding, nicely filled-out characters who never cling helplessly to…
Hugh Jackman’s actual super power is the ability to look good in every ridiculous Wolverine haircut these movies give him, even the unwashed hermit look he rocks in the beginning of this one.
A lot of people have tried to kill me... and I'm still here.
-Logan
I was going to give this film 3.5 stars last night but after dwelling on it since then I'm giving it a slight bump for a few reasons. First it is without a doubt the best on screen adaptation of the Wolverine character to date. While it might not be the best X-Men related film, it is still Hugh Jackman's best outing as Logan. If you want to compare it to the other X-Films however, the only ones that would rival it are X-Men 2 and X-Men: First Class.
The other things that influenced my rating are that it is the best comic book film of…
