Eli T.’s review published on Letterboxd:
The juice was indeed loose.
Let’s Unpack Here…
a). What I Liked
- Michael Keaton as Beetlejuice, he’s still got it after all these years and then some.
- The musical numbers and the score was great, Danny Elfman killed it.
- A lot of the set pieces worked really well, from the dark & grim to the colorful & fun, Tim Burton and the set designer know how to pull it off.
- The Italian, gothic horror backstory scene.
b). What I Didn’t Like
- The first act in its entirety was kind of a drag, whereas the second half let all hell break loose (literally).
- Characters like Rory and Delores felt unnecessary and kind of flat.
- The story itself was kind of dull, I found myself raising my eyebrow at the direction it took, it was almost TOO different from what I was expecting; probably due to trailer-bait.
- The delivery of dialogue didn’t feel genuine, emotionless at times.
c). Overall Thoughts
I didn’t love or hate it, I’m kind of in that little grey area in between; it was fine, but it could’ve been better.
The original Beetlejuice being one of my comfort movies, maybe my expectations were set pretty high.
