Zack ☀️’s review published on Letterboxd:
Beetlejuice Beetlejuice (don’t say it again) was a film I really wanted to see in theaters but sadly I missed out on that opportunity. Still, the film itself is very Tim Burton-esque in the absolute best way.
The production and costume design shaped in this world of Beetle***** is so extraordinary. Bob and the rest of the staff always had my eyes glued to the screen. I appreciate the practical effects being consistent with the first film.
The score was 10/10. Great music, great tense instrumentation. I was vibing throughout the entire film.
Michael Keaton is the obvious standout. Although he didn’t have nearly as much screen time as the first film, he still steals the show in every fashion. Every line out of his mouth was a surprise. A Hawaii Five-O reference? Are you kidding?? Seriously, I’m so happy Keaton was all for reprising his role.
Winona Ryder? Wonderful. Jenna Ortega? Wonderful, as always. She seems to pull some Wednesday traits over to her character of Astrid but not nearly as much as you’d expect. I feel like it’d be easy to just play a linear version of Wednesday but she did not, and for that I am very grateful for her performance.
I wasn’t a huge fan of Justin Theroux as Rory to be honest. Not necessarily his acting, but when his character was on screen my interest dipped at times.
Willem Dafoe was solid and his performance was funny to me. I loved that we got a Danny Devito cameo.
Although I thoroughly enjoyed so many things about this film, it did have its faults as well.
I did feel like there was a LOT going on. It was not exactly easy to keep track of all that was happening. Luckily, it did wrap up into a pretty neat bow by the end. With the runtime being an hour and forty minutes I felt like the movie was just at this consistently FAST pace throughout.
The Soul Train was absolutely amazing. What a vibe.
