  • Tenet

    Tenet

    ★★★★★

I had a feeling I would bump this up to 5 stars eventually, but I thought that would come after 4 or 5 watches, not 2.

Tenet is a culmination of all things Nolan. Every skill he’s honed and every thematic obsession he’s had is wrapped up in a film that maneuvers within the spy movie genre, a type of film that he’s held dear and referenced his entire life.

It’s his Goodfellas. It’s his Jurassic Park. It’s his Rear…

  • Arrival

    Arrival

    ★★★★★

Simply one of the most luscious, invigorating, smart, and devastating science fiction films ever made.

    Come back to me.

Every frame of this is perfection, and it might not even be my favorite Denis film. That's TBD until after I rewatch BR2049. Even if it’s #2, goddamn it is this great.

  • Bad Education

    Bad Education

    ★★★★½

Holy shit can Cory Finley make a movie.

In an alternate universe where I didn’t seek out Thoroughbreds or somehow didn’t love it as much as I do, it’s comforting to know that I would have become a fan of Finley either way.

Bad Education is a fantastic follow-up to the aforementioned social thriller, occupying what is becoming my go-to genre (true crime thriller) and showing us how good those can be. Using just 108 minutes to tell its story…

  • Batman & Robin

    Batman & Robin

    ★★★

This movie is a blast you’re all just snobs.

  • The Gentlemen

    The Gentlemen

    ★★★★½

    2020 - RANKED

My relationship with Guy Ritchie is a lot like my relationship with my Trump-loving Uncle; I don’t have one.

So coming into The Gentlemen, having not seen Snatch, I hoped for a middleish of the road studio picture kinda like the Sherlock Holmes movies. But I was prepared to see Aladdin-level work.

Turns out, I got something closer in quality to The Man from U.N.C.L.E, which is a long way of saying this movie fucking rules. Last year it…

  • The Invisible Man

    The Invisible Man

    ★★★★½

    2020 - RANKED

I, a certified moron who gave Ari Aster's last two films 3 and 3 and a half stars, giving this such high marks (my second 4 1/2 star movie this year!! What!!!!!!!!!!!) perhaps shouldn't be trusted. I get that. Horror ain't my thang.

The Invisible Man is very much my thang.

Coming down the Blumhouse "horror with a relevant societal component to make it doubly horrifying" pipeline, The Invisible Man is flat out my favorite, and I'd be willing…

  • Eyes Wide Shut

    Eyes Wide Shut

    ★★★★

I have lived in NYC for 2 years and have not been invited to a rad Masquerade party on Long Island. Wack.

But this still rules. Knew nothing about it coming in and I am so glad I came in that way. Expected much more melodramatic marital strife and not so much secret society intrigue.

Kubrick directs the hell out of this and I can already tell there’s a ton to unpack.

  • Interstellar

    Interstellar

    ★★★★★

My first time seeing this in theaters since November 2014.

Man, what a powerful film. The kind of power that reminds me why I love movies in the first place.

There’s a chance down the line (especially if I have kids) where this leapfrogs The Dark Knight as my favorite Nolan. (Edit: 8/30, it is now)

Not loving this movie is baffling to me.

  • The Empire Strikes Back

    The Empire Strikes Back

    ★★★★★

My first trip back to the theater!

It felt a little weird at first, but that went away and I was just... happy. Wearing a mask is totally worth it.

    Good movie!

  • Tenet

    Tenet

    ★★★★½

All I know right now is that Tenet is great. As a pure spectacle, it stands shoulder to shoulder with Nolan’s biggest, brashest work. He’s probably the definitive director of the 21st century, and Tenet is compelling evidence that he’ll be keeping that title for the forseeable future.

The first hour or so is him doing his impression of a Bond movie, and the last hour and a half is one of the biggest flexes I’ve ever seen put to…

  • Blade Runner 2049

    Blade Runner 2049

    ★★★★½

Current drunk me: this is a fucking masterpiece bro oh my god. Denis punch me daddy. Ryan bash my face in. Roger knock my fucking teeth out.

Future sober me: Blade Runner 2049 is what all sequels should aspire to be. It expands upon the world set up by the original, mining a deeper meaning while expanding the scope of the original, a gold standard of sci-fi storytelling. Can be watched on a loop until oblivion.

  • Batman Forever

    Batman Forever

    ★★★½

    Batman Movies - RANKED

Kilmer: really, really good Batman. The only thing about this performance that annoys me is I wish he’d gotten a Nolan-esque script to work with. He might be the best actor to play Batman so far.

Jones: Yikes. But he hates Carrey so that made it fun. Two-Face should never be a “supervillain” imo. Even in the Arkham games I find the concept of him as a Crime Boss silly. He should be a tragic figure…
