  • Interstellar

    Interstellar

    ★★★★★

My first time seeing this in theaters since November 2014.

Man, what a powerful film. The kind of power that reminds me why I love movies in the first place.

There’s a chance down the line (especially if I have kids) where this leapfrogs The Dark Knight as my favorite Nolan. (Edit: 8/30, it is now)

Not loving this movie is baffling to me.

    It says ‘stay.’

In prep for daddy’s eventual 11th film, as well as a farewell to my beloved apartment in Manhattan, I came into this watch ready to cry. I did.

I’m not going to argue that this is Nolan’s tightest film, or even his best, but I will die on the hill that to date, it is the movie that best encompasses his skills as a storyteller. And it’s just great to see him make a movie as good…

  • The Truman Show

    The Truman Show

    ★★★★★

A wonderfully searing indictment of capitalism.

    Sell. Sell. Sell. Sell. Sell.

Operators are standing by. They always are.

  • Knives Out

    Knives Out

    ★★★★★

If we want to talk about directorial hot streaks, you can't do much better than Looper, The Last Jedi and Knives Out.

Not a doubt in the world Rian will make it 4 in a row with whatever it ends up being.

  • The Dark Knight

    The Dark Knight

    ★★★★★

There will never be a better Gordon than Gary Oldman imo.

  • Inception

    Inception

    ★★★★★

I may get some hate for this but: Inception is a really good movie.

  • Gone Girl

    Gone Girl

    ★★★★½

    Fincher remains the GOAT.

I saw this on a first date and we somehow didn't break up until a month afterwards. Wild times.

  • Little Women

    Little Women

    ★★★★½

The first thought I had after leaving the theater to see this for the first time was that I had to go again.

And spoiler alert for my top 10 of the year, it’s the highest placing movie I had only seen once before now, so now that they’re on even footing, figuring out how to order my top 4 will keep me awake at night. Worth it tho!

I loved Little Women even more the second time. Gerwig’s screenplay…

  • Once Upon a Time... in Hollywood

Once Upon a Time... in Hollywood

    ★★★★½

For a multitude of reasons, I picked this for my office Oscar pool. One being it seems like it’s showing up on a lot of those cringe secret ballots that have popped up. And another being that Hollywood loves movies about Hollywood. Add a prestige director into the mix, and a surefire Best Supporting Winner and you’ve got yourself a contender as far as I’m concerned. Since Irishman won’t win for dumb reasons, I’ll take this as a good consolation.

    All…

  • The Godfather

    The Godfather

    ★★★★★

Watched as a lead up to Coppola’s new cut of III (which @mods should be on LB) and damn, what a picture.

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: absolutely nothing beats a death montage.

  • Avengers: Infinity War

    Avengers: Infinity War

    ★★★½

I wanted to watch Endgame so I fast forwarded through the boring parts.

Ex: Thor building the axe, scenes with Thanos and Gamora.

  • Avengers: Endgame

    Avengers: Endgame

    NOTES REVIEW:
    - Clint’s sons put mayo on their hot dogs. They got what they deserved.

    - Really dig this low key opening of Tony and what’s her face hanging out, waiting to die.

    - “I dream about you. Cuz it’s always you.” Killer line delivery. Downey needs to get some serious dramatic roles now that he’s done with the MCU. Dude’s got chops.

    - “I lost the kid.” Jesus Christ, Downey.

    - I love how emaciated they made Stark.…
