mm has written 129 reviews for films during 2020.

  • Wonder Woman 1984

    Wonder Woman 1984

    ★½

I’ll say this of Wonder Woman 1984: Chris Nolan (and many others before) said in a recent interview that the only time he’d ever felt like he’d wasted time at a movie is when he didn’t feel like the filmmakers thought it was the best movie ever.

In that sense, I did not feel like I wasted my time watching Wonder Woman 1984.

The last act, with so many other things happening, is a plea to everyone to be better versions…

  • Guns Akimbo

    Guns Akimbo

    ★½

    2020 - RANKED

    It’s Scott Pilgrim, but stupid.

Daniel Radcliffe is legitimately great tho. Gotta support my man.

  • Killing Them Softly

    Killing Them Softly

    ★½

America isn’t a country. It’s a business. Now fucking pay me.

Really unsure of why this exists or even what the point is, but hey, Brad Pitt is good!

  • I'm Thinking of Ending Things

    I'm Thinking of Ending Things

    ★★

Not much to say about this. It’s weird, uncomfortable and disorienting, like all Kaufman joints are. Whether he’s weird for weirds sake or an important artistic voice of the 21st century is not a question I’m qualified to answer.

I probably won’t like any film of his more than Anomalisa. That’s fine by me.

  • The New Mutants

    The New Mutants

    ★★

This review may contain spoilers. I can handle the truth.

Years and years of delays and this thing is bookended by the Two Wolves cliche. Bruh.

I like the concept of what Boone was going for, but the way he got there left a lot to be desired. You can feel the script getting away from him a few times, but some of the visuals were undeniably creepy.

As probably the best actor in the movie, the direction they took with Anya-Taylor Joy’s character was bizarre to say the least. But this is a major star turn for Blu Hunt, so it all evens out.

  • Devs

    Devs

    ★★

I polished off the last 5 episodes last night and..... meh.

Devs does a lot of things right, but unfortunately the things it does wrong (1 specific thing) are placed front and center.

The One Thing is that I just did not know what to make of Sonoya Mizuno’s acting choices or direction. Her Shatner-like line delivery and often vacant expressions flat out did not engage me as a viewer. Even at the end when shit goes down, she has hardly…

  • A Bronx Tale

    A Bronx Tale

    ★★

    This movie’s got great bones.

A father (De Niro) trying to pull his son (some guy) away from the local mafioso (Palminteri) who does his business a couple doors down.

How do you mess that up? I love De Niro, but the answer is casting bad actors. The script could have used some work too but overall it’s the main kids who brought this down for me. Neither of them amounted to much (one did time 😐) which makes sense…

  • The Platform

    The Platform

    ★★

Oh no are movies just going to be about class disparity from now on.

  • Color Out of Space

    Color Out of Space

    ★★

    2020 - RANKED

Adding this to my long-gestating film thesis that just because you (Lovecraft) did it first doesn’t mean you did it better (Annihilation).

Recognizing that this is an adaptation of a book by a genre director, I’m not saying it *should* have been as good as Alex Garland’s masterwork, but I can see where he and author Jeff VanderMeer got a lot of their inspiration from. Thing crashes to earth, alters the environment, and hilarity ensues.

    Garland and…

  • Underwater

    Underwater

    ★★

    2020 - RANKED

    Lil' Paul deserved better.

I was completely ready to just push everything aside and enjoy Alien in the ocean. But this is all just so bland and boring, there proved to be no fun to be had. Bummer.

My big takeaway is that it took Hollywood so long to do Cthulu. Justice for my large devil son.

  • Sound of Metal

    Sound of Metal

    ★★½

This review may contain spoilers. I can handle the truth.

Riz rules as expected, but as a whole Sound of Metal didn’t do all that much for me. Sorry.

  • Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban

Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban

    ★★½

    Sorry y’all. This isn’t good.

Cuaron gets points for creativity, but even the best direction in the world can’t overcome a story as thin as this.

Crimes of Grindelwald > Prisoner of Azkaban
