- "This wooden statue bears the likeness of Pangur Donn, fearless feline mouse hunter and devoted study companion."
- — Wizard's Field Guide[src]
Pangur Donn was a cat at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry who died sometime before the 1890–1891 school year.[1]
Biography[]
They were known as a devoted study companion to the students of Hogwarts and a fearless mouse hunter. They were so liked that, by 1 September 1890, there was a wooden statue of them in the Bell Tower Entrance Hall, and they also had a page in the Wizard's Field Guide.[1]
Behind the scenes[]
- Pangur Donn is likely a reference to the Irish cat Pangur Ban, the pet cat of an Irish monk whom comforted the monk as he wrote the Book of Kells and caught mice that were in his study. This monk wrote a poem about his cat which is remembered in medieval Irish literature.
- Pangur Donn could be translated as Pangur the Brown, possibly meaning that Pangur had a brown coat or it could be a nod to the colour of the wood which bore Pangur's likeness after his death.
