Classroom 1B,[1] also known as the Transfiguration Classroom,[2] was a classroom on the ground-floor of Hogwarts Castle, accessible from the Middle Courtyard.[3][4]
Description[]
The classroom was big, surrounded by high windows, had four rows of three desks, and still had enough room for several cages and bookshelves, two golden cat statues, two chalkboards, and a desk for the professor. Several candlesticks stood lit behind the desk.[3][4]
History[]
Professor Minerva McGonagall and Professor Matilda Weasley both taught their Transfiguration classes in this classroom during their tenures as the Transfiguration professor.[1][5]
During the 1890–1891 school year, Professor Weasley kept the product of a failed Vera Verto attempt in her classroom as a warning to her students who did not take the subject of Transfiguration seriously.
During the 1986–1987 school year, Jacob's sibling and Bill Weasley approached Tulip Karasu in this clasroom, who was busy writing with her pet toad Dennis.[6]
In 1994, she used her classroom to teach her Gryffindor students dancing lessons, in preparation for the upcoming Yule Ball on 25 December.[7]
Behind the scenes[]
- In the first two film adaptations, the classroom is shown to be on the south side of the Middle Courtyard. But in Prisoner of Azkaban and the subsequent film adaptations, it is moved to the east side of the courtyard, since the former building is replaced by the Dark and Astronomy Towers.
- In the first two film adaptations, the scenes of Classroom 1B were actually shot in the Chapter House of Durham Cathedral.
- In the film adaptation of Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, a different set was used to portray this classroom. But in the video game adaption it resumes its layout from the first and second film and the fifth video game.
- When Minerva McGonagall taught the students to dance in the film adaptation of Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, the room used to portray the classroom was the one used to portray the hospital wing in the the film adaptation of Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone.
