Daniel Page: "I'll always be your friend, but you can't ask me not to change, especially now that I know who I am."
Ivy Warrington: "We make our own choices in life, Daniel."
Daniel Page: "This is my choice, Ivy. The world is a hard place, I won't let it beat me."
— Daniel Page's determination[src]

Daniel Page was a British or Irish half-blood[3] wizard who began attending Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry in 2008.[5][1]

Biography[]

Early life[]

"The truth is most of them are in prison. They called my family "Bloody Pages" in the papers. After that school wasn't much fun.""

The Bloody Pages

A Muggle newspaper reporting the arrest of Daniel's family

Daniel was born and raised somewhere in the British Isles between 1996 and 1997.[1] He was the third child and youngest son of a Muggle father, Gorman, and a witch named Kaleena, and was raised alongside his older brother Reggie and sister Esme. While the only one of the three kids to possess magical ability, Daniel nevertheless attended a Muggle primary school prior to receiving his letter of acceptance from Hogwarts.[9] Prior to Hogwarts, Kaleena taught Daniel much about the wizarding world, including about the Book of Admittance.[10][11] Kaleena used to sing the Mooncalf lullaby to him while putting him to bed[12] and took him to Hogsmeade once.[13] When he was very young, Kaleena took Daniel to meet Victor Gridley, but spent most of the meeting hiding behind his mother.[14]

The Page family seemingly lived in London for most of Daniel's life. As a child, Daniel found taking the London Underground to be scary and once visited the botanical gardens with his mother.[15] At one point, Daniel came into contact with a Pensieve and used it to view an unknown individual's memory.[10]

Once, when Esme was angered by her father giving her a teddy bear for Christmas when she was already seventeen, she took Daniel to go ice skating, which made them extremely happy.[16]

While apparently loving, Daniel's childhood were still marred by controversy from an early age, marked by the illicit activities of their father and, in due time, also Reggie, who was a Squib. Daniel even became familiar with Knockturn Alley because his family visited the place.[17] At some point, they were eventually cornered by the Muggle police and arrested. Daniel's mother was also apprehended when she apparently used magic to help, and was sentenced to Azkaban due to violation of the International Statute of Wizarding Secrecy. The family's arrest was covered by a Muggle newspaper, dubbing them "The Bloody Pages". Afterwards, Daniel, who was now left in the care of his older sister, found school to be anything but fun as he was forced to endure malicious rumours and judgement from his peers.[18] He was occasionally allowed to visit his mother in prison and her arrest apparently left him with a deep feeling of resentment towards the Ministry for how they had sentenced his mother, despite there never being any evidence to cement their claim of Kaleena's allegiance to NOTME.[5]

Daniel never flew on a broomstick until he went to Hogwarts,[19] because he lived in London.[20]

Hogwarts years (2008–)[]

First year[]

Sorting Ceremony[]

On 1 September 2008, Daniel sat on his own on the Hogwarts Express. When a fellow first year student asked if they could sit next to him, he told them they didn't want to sit there and that nobody would sit next to him.[21]

Daniel finally arrived at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry when he was eleven. He did so with a sigh of relief, as few witches and wizards read Muggle newspapers and hence, nobody knew him, taking off a lot of the pressure he had been under after all that happened. On 1 September 2008, he travelled to the school via the Hogwarts Express and attended the Sorting Ceremony, being sorted into the same house as Lottie Turner, Ivy Warrington and an unidentified student.[5]

One day, Daniel ran into the student in the Grand Staircase running away from Argus Filch. He told them Filch was also after him for supposedly stealing potion ingredients in the Potions Storeroom which he denied responsibility for. The nearby portrait of William de Cognac called it delightful drama and advised them to stay cool so that the problems will be solved. When the student asked for suggestions, he told them about a great duel he heard about. After the story, Daniel told the student that he thought Quidditch sounded good but he preferred studying Potions. They showed an interested in flying to which he told them to talk to Robyn Thistlethwaite, who was recruiting "flying buddies" in the Great Hall.[22]

Helping Ivy[]

One evening, he was invited to attend a search party meeting in the Hogwarts Library to help find Ivy. Daniel was reading books which Robyn thought was mad, but he told her if studying at school was mad, then he supposed he was. He didn't want to help search for her during the night in case they were caught and stayed behind when they left. However, he later changed his mind because he was worried his friends would lose house points. He found them in the Grand Staircase where he helped to search the Potions classroom. Robyn disappeared after they fended off copies of The Monster Book of Monsters.[23]

The student and Daniel carried on searching for Ivy. At one point, they walked past the Troll Tapestry he thought was unique. He wanted the student to give up the search for the night but on their way back, they accidentally found the Room of Requirement. When they entered it, they found a confused Ivy who had no idea how she ended up there. After hearing her story that the only thing she remembered was she was searching for "something" and suspected someone was following her, he told her they could investigate later but should get back to the common room before they get caught after curfew.[23]

Second year[]

Uncovering a mystery[]

A Christmas present[]

One day during the Christmas holidays of his second year, Daniel spent his time in the Potions classroom mixing a potion. When Ivy Warrington and another friend came looking for him and asked why, he told them that he was making a confidence boosting brew to give to his older sister Esme, who had been working a lot since their parents were imprisoned. Daniel had spent the past month working on the potion and had devised his own recipe, which included a Pepperup Potion, a Wit-Sharpening Potion and a few other ingredients. Ivy pointed out that his support would be what would make Esme happier than anything else. However, Daniel claimed that this potion must have been what she needed most.

Later, Ivy and her friend found Daniel sitting in the corner of the ballroom stage. Daniel reported that the gift had been sent back, and then told his sister that his dedication in itself had amplified her confidence. When Ivy expressed her delight that her guesses had been right, Daniel murmured that Ivy had been right, as usual. He asked Ivy to pick out a present for Esme on his behalf for her birthday, to which she readily agreed. Daniel was unwilling to waste a confidence boosting brew that only had a short shelf life. He took the potion himself, leaving his two friends in a state of shock. He began to disclose his immense confidence in his potion brewing skill and other abilities, and said that he had been working on something in secret. Daniel then went on stage and began to dance alone as the students around him looked on.[24]

In the Great Hall, decorated for Christmas, Ivy was sitting at a table, looking deflated. When a friend pointed this out, she revealed that she was recalling memories of Christmas with her older sister, Winifred. Then Daniel appeared and invited them to a 'real snowball fight'. Ivy promised to go later and left the Great Hall. Daniel asked his friend about Ivy's condition, and when he found out why, he let out a few words as if he had thought of something and left the Great Hall.

Ivy and Daniel sending the present

Daniel found Ivy in the Astronomy Tower. He showed her the present he had prepared, but she refused, saying she was not in the mood to open it. He said the present was for Winifred. Ivy regarded this as an unfunny joke. Daniel suggested the idea of giving this present to Winifred with the Vanishing Spell. Although a strange idea, he thought that this might help Ivy feel more connected to her sister. With the help of headmistress McGonagall, Daniel had collected "memories" from Ivy's friends of when they met her. He explained this enabled Winifred to know Ivy's friends as well as Ivy did. His words left her in tears. After the present vanished, Daniel said that he was sure it was impossible for them to know if Winifred got it, clamming up and stopping speaking in the middle of his sentence. Ivy followed his words by saying, "It didn't matter, I'm going to find her......someday."[25]

As a present to Daniel and all their friends, Lottie gave them blank canvases. While the others were dumbfounded, Daniel bluntly pointed out they were blank, prompting Lottie to explain that she wished to paint with everyone. Daniel stated that none of them could paint, but Lottie said that didn't matter as long they enjoyed it and the company of their loved ones, just like how she did with her father. Touched by Lottie's words, the group thanked Lottie and began thinking what to paint, though Daniel told her not to expect a masterpiece.[26]

Third year[]

Trip to Azkaban[]

Attack at Hogsmeade[]

Meeting Victor Gridley[]

Family matters exposed[]

Skirmish in the caravan[]

Forced to find the crown of courage[]

Problems in Hogsmeade[]

Daniel returned home for the Christmas holidays and spent it with his sister, Esme and her boyfriend, Griffith. She decided to spend New Year's Eve with Griffith, but invited Daniel to celebrate with them. He didn't want to feel like a third wheel and decided to get an early train back to Hogwarts. He told his friend about it and they invited him to spend the day with them in Hogsmeade. He eventually agreed but wasn't impressed when they also invited Colby and Fischer Frey. They spent the day in the village, visiting the Three Broomsticks and Zonko's before watching a firework display. He admitted the day was better than he had thought it would be, the twins both told the student and Daniel that they had to go back to being "enemies" the next day.[27]

Fourth year[]

Physical description[]

Daniel has light skin, shaggy auburn hair that covers the left half his face, and brown eyes. He typically wore a uniform robe, brown pants, and brown shoes. Outside of class, he was dressed more casually in a light purple, high-colour jumper, dark purple trousers, a brown jacket, and wooden pendant around his neck.

Personality and traits[]

Robyn Thistlethwaite: "And get this-there's going to be a student race around the castle at sunset. Do you know what that means?"
Daniel Page: "That the Hospital Wing will be full by midnight?"
— Daniel displaying his sarcastic wit.[src]

Upon arriving at school, Daniel came off as a solitary, studious young wizard that often preferred focusing on his academics over interacting with other people. He strove to be the best in all magical subjects and was determined to prove himself.[6] He preferred mixing potions to making new friends.[21] Daniel liked quiet places, like the Potions Classroom,[28] where he spent most his time when not with his friends,[29] and the Forbidden Forest.[15] When he befriended, among others, Robyn Thistlethwaite and Ivy Warrington, he became significantly more open and sociable. Daniel was a very blunt person, unafraid of saying exactly what was on his mind, and had a dry, sarcastic wit. He would talk back against adults and even his friends weren't spared from his candid remarks, which could sometimes be insensitive or rude.

Daniel Page: "Urgh…not again…Whew, it's you, <Student>."
Unidentified Muggle-born Hogwarts student: "Yeah, I'm not a stranger here to harass you. You don't have to get all anxious."
Daniel Page: "Thank goodness. I've already tried hiding in a corner, but there's still an endless stream of them. They're as annoying as the gnomes in Hagrid's garden."
Unidentified Muggle-born Hogwarts student: "You dance really well, so naturally everyone would ask you to dance with them."
Daniel Page: "Oh…if only they turn a blind eye to my "strength"."
— Daniel's aversion to social interaction.[src]

Daniel could be a little awkward at socialising,[2] and didn't like attending social events.[30] By his own admission, he was not good at picking gifts[31] and cared little for fashion.[32] He also disliked attention,[6] particularly stemming from his family's misfortune. He did not like to do things like dancing or singing in public, but Daniel admitted to finding enjoyment out of activities he typically avoided with proper encouragement.[33][2] Daniel ironically had some artistic inclination, as he was very good at dancing,[5] had a pleasant singing voice,[34] and knew how to play guitar.[35]

Unidentified Muggle-born Hogwarts student: "Peeves didn't tell me, you did! I know you care about your friends. Sneaking off to brew a potion to make them feel better is exactly what you'd do."
Daniel: "I don't know what you're talking about. This is for, um, class."
Unidentified Muggle-born Hogwarts student: "Come on, Daniel. It's okay to admit you want to help your friends. I promise I won't tell anyone how nice you really are."
Daniel: "Fine. I'm making Pepperup Potion. But it's because if they feel better, they won't get me sick. That's all."
Unidentified Muggle-born Hogwarts student: "Sure it is, Daniel. By the way, you're blushing."
— Daniel's shy and caring nature[src]

Despite acting distant at times, Daniel was a very caring, thoughtful, and warm person who was always willing to help his friends. However, he could be shy and reserved with expressing his warmer side, only showing such feelings to those closest to him and typically needed some coaxing for him to admit it.[36] He disliked intolerance[2] and appreciated the loyal friends he made and would never betray those he cared about.[6][7] Daniel's kind heart was shown through his actions, from healing injured creatures[37][38][39] to providing his friends with potions to improve their health.[40][36] Daniel was supportive, generous, and protective towards his friends and those he cared about. He cheered them on,[41][42][43] made potions they requested,[44][45] and aided them whenever he could.[46][47]

Ivy Warrington: "Can we go back to Honeydukes?"
Daniel: "And miss the chance to stare danger right in the face?"
— Daniel's brave, somewhat cocky, disposition in the Hog's Head Inn[src]

Daniel typically avoided getting into trouble, but he was actually rather audacious in breaking the school rules. In his efforts to brew all types of potions, he constantly sneaked into the Forbidden Forest to gather herbs and potion ingredients.[48][49][50] He would brew potions without permission, such as the Polyjuice Potion,[51] and would accidentally deplete the school's ingredients, like the rare Exploding Fluid.[52] However, he would never cheat in school or help others cheat, even if they were his friends.[44] Daniel also practised potions over the holidays, for which his Muggle-born friend noted he was skirting around the Decree for the Reasonable Restriction of Underage Sorcery.[53] Likely due to his family's criminal ties, Daniel was rather nonchalant in visiting places of poor reputation, such as the Hog's Head Inn[54] and Knockturn Alley,[17] or talking to a shady back-alley wizard.[52] As long as it was for a good reason and it was nothing too extreme, Daniel was willing to disobey the rules when he felt it necessary, especially for someone he cared about.

He was sensitive and had a bit of temper, which sometimes led to him recklessly taking action, but he always fought to the end.[6] He was also prone to acting emotionally, especially when angry or upset, and would isolate himself from others whenever something bad happened to him. As he was not very honest with his emotions, Daniel would insist he was fine, when he really was not. Daniel was quite daring and brave, displaying grit, perseverance and mental fortitude in the face of hardships. Despite a very tumultuous third year at Hogwarts, Daniel courageously dealt with all the emotional stress of being blackmailed, suffering an identity crisis, and being forced to endure terrible gossip from his peers.[55]

While polite and civil towards new people, Daniel was slow to trust and was usually sceptical about the various happenings around him.[6] He possessed a curious mind and a penchant for investigating strange incidents and people. Intelligent and magically gifted, Daniel was a critical thinker and was clever, with keen observation skills and extraordinary insight,[2] which aided him and his friends in the many troubles they involved themselves in. He also kept well-informed on the goings-on in the wizarding community, to the point that he was very familiar with the notorious group known as NOTME.

Kevin Farrell: "What if Gorski is...a Dark wizard?"
Daniel Page: "That's what we need to find out. Robyn, you watch the hall, and Kevin, you stand outside Gorski's door in case something strange happens."
Kevin Farrell: "And where exactly will you be?"
Daniel Page: "We're going into Gorski's office to get to the bottom of this."
— Daniel leading his friends to confront Jakub Gorski.[src]

Be it investigation, schoolwork, or personal matters, Daniel handled everything in a very pragmatic, objective, and goal-oriented fashion. While he knew his friends would never lie to him, Daniel would question them to better understand the truth. He would always ask relevant questions or remind his friends to do so.[56][30][57] Once he set his mind on something, Daniel was very determined to see it through to the end and was willing to do so with or without help.[50][55] Despite his temper, Daniel could a keep level head in highly stressful situations, reacting quickly to events and adapt accordingly. When he was caught flat-footed being sent into Victor Gridley's dungeon by Gridley and his Dementors, Daniel got the idea to bring Gridley down by aiming at his desk with a Summoning Charm. Furthermore, he cleverly managed to outplay people much older than him by making a copy of Gridley's Skeleton Key and keeping bits of information to himself.[58] While Daniel and his friends usually deferred to each other, Daniel's assertiveness, pragmatism, and quick-wit resulted him taking leadership within the group. He led the charge in solving Ivy's foggy memory,[10] in confronting the fishy Jakub Gorski,[59] and coming up with plans for the final challenge of the Intercontinental Wizard's Cup.[60]

"It's the Ministry's fault. Because of their ridiculous laws about performing magic in front of Muggles. They needed someone to blame so they sent her to Azkaban. She's innocent."
— Daniel's resentment towards the British Ministry of Magic[src]

Following his mother's imprisonment after her violation of the International Statute of Wizarding Secrecy, he grew to view it as a "stupid law". He expressed the belief that, while they should not necessarily go around flaunting their abilities to the masses, he nevertheless believed that keeping magic from the Muggle world entirely was a selfish thing to do. He was apparently blind to the extent to which permitting magic around non-wizards could be exploited for nefarious purposes.[5] As such, he was known to dislike the British Ministry of Magic.[2] The source of this belief and resentment was apparently his mother being imprisoned under the accusation of being associated with NOTME despite there being no concrete evidence of this other than Kaleena performing magic in front of Muggles to save Daniel's father and brother. Daniel clearly disliked that, despite his mother having no wish to hurt the Muggles arresting her family, she was still accused of being a criminal and sentenced to Azkaban.

Despite coming off as strong and independent, Daniel deeply struggled with reconciling his complicated feelings of love for his family, the reality of their criminal deeds, and how it reflected his own self-perception. His greatest fear was that his mother wasn't as good a person as he thought, and he was afraid that there were worse things about his family that he didn't know about.[18][61] After his family secret being outed to the entire school, Daniel eventually conquered that fear by accepting his own sense of self and learning to not care about what other people thought of him.[42][62]

Daniel aspired to be a strong, powerful wizard in the hopes of bringing his family back together one day.[6] When talking about his future plans, Daniel expressed a desire to own an apothecary after graduating and put his potions skills to use.[63] While Daniel strove to stand out academically, there some subjects he was more lax with, albeit unintentionally. He was unable to finish his Astronomy class homework on time more than once[64] and tended to fall asleep in Divination because he found the room to be cosy.[65][66] Humorously, Daniel was willing to risk getting a minor injury rather than face punishment for not finishing his homework. While Ivy scolded him for such thinking and called him "mad", Daniel wittily retorted that he was a "mad genius".[64] Daniel also joked about drinking a Draught of Living Death to avoid a disturbing Defence Against the Dark Arts class.[40]

Daniel's favourite foods included shepherd's pie[40] and Butterbeer.[13]

Magical abilities and skills[]

  • Musical skills: Daniel could play the guitar.[5][35]

Possessions[]

  • Wand: Daniel most likely purchased this wand before his first year, which was 13 inches, made of vine with a phoenix feather core.[6]
  • Self-Defensive Spellwork: Daniel owned this book and carried it with him at all times.[72]
  • Jinxes for the Jinxed: Ivy Warrington recommended this book to him, as it contained jinxes and ways to deal with them than "Self-Defensive Spellwork" did.[73][74]
  • Coin: Originally belonging to his mother, Daniel claimed possession of it and carried it around in his pocket since finding at his home.

Relationships[]

Family[]

Esme Page: "You were dreaming again...about mum and dad. You need to let them go. They're criminals, remember?"
Daniel Page: "Not mum. It wasn't her fault. It was an accident."
Esme Page: "Oh, Daniel...what am I going to do with you? I've tried so hard to take care of us and you want to throw it all away fighting monsters and...sticking up for them."
Daniel Page: "I'm sorry. Esme. You mean everything to me. You're all I've got left, too."
— Daniel's complicated feelings towards his family[src]

Daniel deeply cared about his family and wanted nothing more than to bring them together again.[6] While his relationship with his father and his older brother Reggie is largely unknown, Daniel had lingering attachments to the family as a whole, much to his sister Esme's dismay, who wanted Daniel to disown them.

While accepting of his father and brother's criminal activities, Daniel actively defended his mother's actions, knowing she never intended to hurt anyone or violate the International Statute of Wizarding Secrecy. He saw her Azkaban sentence as unjust, especially since Kaleena had been accused and found guilty of being a member of the Nocturnal Order of Tricks and Magical Exhibitions without proper evidence. Daniel was very close to his mother and learned much of the wizarding world from her as the only child with magical abilities. When Daniel was a child, Kaleena used to sing the Mooncalf lullaby to him while putting him to bed,[12] and Daniel joined her on various outings, such as to the botanical gardens,[15] and Hogsmeade.[13] Daniel worried about his mother's time in Azkaban, and even tried to read the book Impenetrable Azkaban: The Hidden Prison to Escape in the World to learn more about the place. The arrest of Kaleena apparently inspired his resentful attitude towards the Ministry of Magic and laws related to the secrecy of wizardkind. Kaleena seemed evasive in speaking to Daniel about certain aspects about her past, as she refused to tell him about the coin she received from Victor Gridley and simply asked him to keep it safe.[75]

Following the rest of his family's imprisonment, Daniel was placed under the legal guardianship of Esme. They shared a very close relationship, viewing and valuing each other as their "everything". Likewise, they were both very protective of each other, but this caused some disagreements between the two. As the older sibling, Esme worried about Daniel getting into trouble and endangering himself, but Daniel stubbornly insisted that he could look after himself and that he needed to protect his sister.[55] According to Daniel, Esme became more protective of him after the incident with Gridley and barely let him out of her sight. This greatly annoyed Daniel and he was forced to sneak out at night just to have time for himself.[53]

As much as he loved his family, Daniel admitted that he found them to be "messy" and holidays were tough for him, hence why he enjoyed spending time at Hogwarts as an escape.[76]

Unidentified Muggle-born Hogwarts student[]

Unidentified Muggle-born Hogwarts student: "But they're just rumours, Daniel. They're not true."
Daniel: "But that's just it-what if they are?"
Unidentified Muggle-born Hogwarts student: "I'm sure that's not the case."
Daniel: "No? You don't know what I went through growing up, what it was like..."
Unidentified Muggle-born Hogwarts student: "Maybe not, but whatever happened, I'll support you, Daniel. I promise."
— Daniel's close bond with the student[src]

The Muggle-born student was one of Daniel's best friends and a close confidant. Before their first year began, Daniel encountered the student at Diagon Alley and the Hogwarts Express, but Daniel was very reserved and kept them at arm's length, warning them not to get too close to him.[21] Daniel and the student ended being sorted into the same House and were on cordial terms. After spending time with each other while searching for a missing Ivy, Daniel and the student grew to be very close and became best friends with each other.

Daniel and the student shared a great deal of trust and respect for one another, understanding each other very well. The student thought highly of Daniel's talent for potions and frequently went to him for help on the subject or recommended him to other people, like Abigail Grey, if they needed help.[65][77] Daniel generously lent his aid to brew the Hair-Dyeing Potion,[45] the two-tone version,[78] and the Beautification Potion[79] for Alma because his friend asked him to help her stand out. Although Daniel was slightly miffed about being dragged into supplying about half the school the Hair-Dyeing Potion due to its popularity, which the student apologised for.[78]

As they were both curious, Daniel and his friend had a knack for stumbling into trouble and took it upon themselves to solve problems around Hogwarts and Hogsmeade. They did it so much that Daniel considered himself, the student, and Ivy as a "team", and they typically assisted each other in solving any mysterious happenings.[80] Anytime something piqued their shared interest, they researched it together.[81][82] When it was just the two of them, Daniel and the student's adventures regularly included them disobeying the school rules and fighting something or someone.[83][37] Their escapades allowed them to strengthen their bond and develop good synergy at handling tasks and fighting side-by-side, as well as keeping any rashness in check. While often exasperated by Daniel's potion-making antics, the student accompanied Daniel in his endeavours, if only to protect him since they knew Daniel would do what he wanted either way, and to make sure he didn't do anything reckless.[49][52][50] As a Muggle-born, the student valued Daniel's greater knowledge of the wizarding world, pragmatism, and his quick-wit. Even when Daniel didn't fully involve himself in whatever task the student was doing, the student would still go to him for practical advice[32] and analysis.[84] Whenever the student got stuck on a problem or bemoaned negative scrutiny for their actions, Daniel would be supportive and would reassure that he believed the student, as they were not the type to lie, and that things would blow over in time.[30][57]

Daniel was comfortable around the student and he would confide in them first before anyone else. As the student was even-tempered and mindful, the student would help Daniel navigate social situations as he was awkward,[37] and would aid him in avoiding people in the Dance Club.[5] In their third year, their friendship became a bit strained as Daniel was going through an identity crisis and was being influenced by Elliot Evers. While the student wasn't as vocal as Ivy, they didn't like Elliot, but tolerated him since he was Daniel's friend. On top of Daniel being blackmailed, the student did their best to support Daniel in whatever way they could as he sorted out his problems. The student broke the tension between Daniel and Ivy when they argued, comforted him when he was sad, and protected Daniel from danger. Although it worried and sadden them, the student generally tried to respect Daniel's wishes, even if it meant Daniel pushed them away to do things alone, but would rebel against Daniel's requests in order to help him.[55] In their fourth year, the student was the first person Daniel told about his work with Elliot's reformed NOTME. Recognising that Daniel been through a lot, the student chose not to pry and expressed relief that Daniel cut ties with Elliot.[85]

After Daniel's family secret spread through Hogwarts, he began isolating himself because of the awful rumours about his family. The student confronted him about it and Daniel confessed his fears that there might be some truth in the rumours. The student assured him that they would always stand by his side no matter what. In his depressed state, Daniel warned the student not make promises that they would regret, but the student was resolute that they wouldn't and remained a true friend to him.[18]

Ivy Warrington[]

Daniel Page: "You may not always agree with the decisions I make, but you're going to have accept them."
Ivy Warrington: "Just don't ask me to idly stand by if I think you're making a mistake."
Daniel Page: "I wouldn't have it any other way."
— Daniel's strong friendship with Ivy[src]

Ivy was one of Daniel's closest friends and a fellow Housemate, being one of the few people Daniel could fully trust and confide in. During their first year, Daniel initially kept his distance from everyone and wasn't very close to anyone, though he and Ivy were familiar with each other as peers. Daniel was uninterested in joining the unsanctioned search for Ivy when she went missing, but ended up joining in and being one of the two students to find her. Since then, Daniel, Ivy and their Muggle-born friend became best friends with each other. As they were in the same year and house, Daniel and Ivy spent a lot of their time together, from helping each other practising spells and doing group assignments.

Daniel's cynical pragmatism balanced out with Ivy's upbeat optimism, allowing their personalities to compliment and ground each other. Ivy liked to tease Daniel and get him flustered, but it was always good-natured and they both held great respect for each other's abilities. Daniel cared very much for Ivy and was protective of her, a feeling that Ivy returned as just as fiercely. They did their best to be supportive when dealing with their respective family drama and comforted each other when they were down. During their first year, Daniel and Ivy stood up for each other against their bully, Cassandra Vole, who attempted to hurt their friendship by alluding to their family affairs. Daniel confided in Ivy and their friend about his family being criminals, and they didn't judge him for it. When Ivy had a hard time dealing with her foggy memory about her twin sister Winifred, Daniel was determined to find out the truth for Ivy's sake, even when Ivy tried to push her friends away. Daniel gave her space when needed, assuaged her fears, and repeatedly assured Ivy that she was a good person. When Ivy felt sad about Winifred during the holidays, Daniel sought to comfort her by preparing a present of memories of Ivy for Winifred. While they didn't know if the gift would reach Winifred, Ivy was touched by Daniel's sweet gesture.[25]

However, as they were both stubborn and opinionated, Daniel and Ivy bickered at times, especially since they were not shy at expressing their displeasure with each other. Their friendship became somewhat strained in their third year, as Daniel was being influenced by the devious Elliot Evers. Ivy was very vocal about her distaste for Elliot and his sly actions, but Daniel defended him at every turn, much to her chagrin. Despite their arguing and tension, Ivy did her best to defend Daniel and consoled him when he was working through his emotional issues. Just like Daniel did with her, Ivy assured him that he was a good person and that she would always be there for him. Since Daniel was being blackmailed by the villainous Victor Gridley to do a task, Daniel didn't want to involve his friends in such a dangerous situation, but Ivy and their Muggle-born friend insisted on being there for him. By the end of year, Daniel set some boundaries with Ivy, telling her he could not be his "old self", as she could not expect him not to change, but he would always be her friend. He also told her that she needed to respect his choices, even if she didn't agree with them, and he appreciated that Ivy would keep him from making any mistakes.[58]

Daniel was good friends with Robyn, Kevin, and Lottie since their first year, and they spent a lot of time together, going on adventures and doing school activities. During their third year, Kevin and the girls learned about how most of Daniel's family was in jail. Despite the exaggerated rumours and negative attention it brought, the trio did not believe it or cared, being more worried about Daniel's emotional well-being, and remained close to Daniel.[18]

Daniel's studious, dry demeanour tended to clash against Robyn's impulsive, out-going attitude, causing the two to tease and sarcastically quip at each other. Robyn sometimes engaged in playful games with Daniel in order to best him or play pranks on him, though Daniel typically noticed when she was in a more advantageous position or if something was off.[67][86] Daniel got along well with the more subdued, bookish Kevin and sweet, gentle Lottie. Daniel liked to playfully rib Kevin for his clumsiness, but was always supportive and had a good rapport with him.[14][87] Daniel displayed a protective side towards Kevin and Lottie since both were rather timid. Daniel enjoyed listening to Lottie's stories of her world travels[88][89] and he was implied to view Lottie to be like family.[90]

Cassandra Vole[]

"Cassandra, I know a lot of the boys fancy you, but to me you're just a cold-hearted witch."
— Daniel expressing his contempt for Cassandra [src]

Daniel shared a very antagonistic and competitive mutual rivalry with Cassandra, who bullied Daniel and his friends since their first year. Daniel hated Cassandra's mean, haughty attitude and her belittlement of others, especially since Cassandra took every opportunity to insult and provoke Daniel and his friends, which usually led to a fight.

During the first year, Daniel and Cassandra argued about hiding magic from Muggles, when Cassandra mocked Daniel wanting to be a criminal, made insinuations about his family, and threatened to get him sent to Azkaban. As the subject was a sore point due his family's circumstances, Daniel was angry at Cassandra and their enmity continued to escalate as Cassandra and the Frey twins kept meddling in his and his friends' affairs and friendship.[56] After learning about Daniel's family, Cassandra relished in gossiping about it with other students and called him criminal. She cruelly taunted Daniel about it and believed in the exaggerated rumours going around school about him.[62][18] Cassandra was not above trying to sabotage Daniel and his friends during class, placing a Venomous Tentacula in their trough. Daniel suspected it was Cassandra, but couldn't prove it and the entire class was unfairly punished for it.[82]

In their fourth year, Daniel pointedly told Cassandra he found her to be "cold-hearted" and was irritated at being forced to "put up with" her for the Intercontinental Wizard's Cup.[53][85] Due to all the grief she had given him and his friends, Daniel understandably found the prospect of being friends with Cassandra to be uncomfortable. After the Siege of Hogwarts, Daniel expressed doubt after he heard that Cassandra had thanked his friend, in contrast to Ivy, who was more open to being friendlier with her.[91] Despite their mutual animosity, Daniel was capable of putting it aside and worked with her when the situation called for it. Daniel gallantly protected Cassandra from being hit by Gawrloc during the Wizard's Cup. After Cassandra sincerely thanked Daniel, he graciously accepted it, but noted how "weird" it was for the two of them to be amicable with each other and stated that they would likely be enemies again next year.[60]

Fischer and Colby Frey[]

Unidentified Muggle-born Hogwarts student: "Think the Freys learned their lesson not to cheat?"
Daniel: "No, I'm sure they'll be back to old, dodgy ways soon enough."
— Daniel's low opinion of the Frey twins[src]

Daniel didn't hate the Frey twins the way Ivy hated Cassandra,[2][92] but their relationship was marked by mutual antagonism and rivalry. The Frey twins often bullied Daniel and his friends, with most encounters with the Freys started with the twins messing with Daniel and co. and throwing insults before devolving into a fight. They hate Daniel[93] and appeared to have a particular fixation on him and part of the reason seemed to be due to them envying Daniel for his academic performance. During their second year, they tricked and lied to Argus Filch to get him to confiscate Daniel's potions equipment, just to get back at him for being better at Defence Against the Dark Arts class. Their bullying of Daniel got to the point that it even exasperated Cassandra, who told them to lay off Daniel as she thought the twins were starting to "look desperate" in their attempts to one-up the boy.[94]

Daniel was very aware of the Freys' periodic efforts to cheat, lie, pull pranks, and generally make his life difficult around Hogwarts. He would both knowingly[95] and unknowingly[96] investigate their mischief, thwart their schemes, and made sure they didn't cause trouble.[40]

During the beginning of the Hogwarts Chizpurfle infestation, Daniel initially suspected the Freys of having something to do with the mass broomstick malfunction and was prepared for a fight if he and his friends had to confront them, exemplifying Daniel's contentious relationship with the Freys and their antics.[20] After learning about Daniel's family, the Freys cruelly taunted Daniel about it and expressed amusement in the exaggerated rumours going around school about his family.[62][18]

Despite their near-constant friction, Daniel was capable of getting along with the Freys, with his Muggle-born friend as intermediary, on special occasions.[27]

Other friends[]

During his first year, Daniel and his friends found the portrait Gossamer in their common room and freed him from from his confinement. Learning of Gossamer's mischievous behaviour, Daniel wanted to lock him up again before the chaos he reaped got everyone into trouble. However, realising Gossamer just wanted companions, Daniel and his friends warmed to the portrait and promised to be his friends.[97] Daniel appreciated Gossamer's ability to spy and would request his help with tracking people or getting his knowledge of hidden areas in the castle.

Through their mutual friend, Daniel befriended Abigail Grey and was among the few at Hogwarts to know about her werewolf affliction. Aside from spending time together, Abigail sometimes relied on Daniel's skills with potions, such as when her Wizard's Chess set got infected with Chizpurfles and she needed to cleanse it.[68][66][98][77] When meeting Wénshī Scrivenshaft, Daniel was initially guarded and wary of the upperclassman. After being suspected for stealing a goblin-forged sword, Daniel and his friends learned that Wénshī was responsible and about his financial crisis with Scrivenshaft's Quill Shop. Daniel joined the effort to help Wénshī with his situation and assisted him in handling the sinister Midas Gullveig.[17] After defeating Midas, Wénshī was grateful for all his friends and started to write about them and their adventure in a book.[99] At one point, Wénshī gifted Daniel with one of his personally crafted quills, which Daniel was grateful for and planned to brew a potion for Wénshī as a thank-you present, but the quill turned out to be defective (due to a prank from the Freys) and was returned.[77]

During the Intercontinental Wizard's Cup, Daniel became friends with Violet Williams of Ilvermorny School of Witchcraft and Wizardry and Kenji Kobayashi of Mahoutokoro.[100] At the end of the tournament celebration, Daniel spent time enjoying the party and dancing with his foreign friends.[101]

Horace Slughorn[]

Professor Slughorn: "Daniel, you have a brilliant mind. Your well-brewed Invisibility Potion proves that. That's why I'm gobsmacked you didn't think to ask me or another professor for help first."
Daniel: "I don't know... I suppose I was afraid you'd think I was guilty too. I'm a 'Bloody Page'. People tend to assume the worst of me."
Professor Slughorn: "My boy, I know better than to judge someone based on their background. It's the character of a person and how they use their gifts that matter. You, Daniel, are certainly gifted. What remains to be seen is how you'll use those gifts."
— Slughorn's positive opinion of Daniel[src]

Daniel enjoyed a good teacher-student relationship with his Potions professor. As the top brewer of his class[67], Daniel excelled in Slughorn's class and impressed his professor with his skills. Slughorn even spoke glowingly about Daniel to Severus Snape's portrait, who agreed that Daniel was talented.[70] Slughorn also told Daniel where the best spots to pick herbs were in the Forbidden Forest.[15]

After Daniel's family background was revealed to the entire school, Slughorn didn't judge Daniel for it. When Daniel was caught trying to steal his potions supplies back from Argus Filch, Slughorn recognised that Daniel was being treated unfairly, since Daniel explained that he had been falsely accused of swapping Filch's pumpkin juice for a Babbling Beverage. Slughorn took over handling Daniel's punishment, lecturing him over his irresponsible actions, but expressed understanding to Daniel's woes about his negative reputation and assured Daniel that he thought he was brilliant student. Slughorn promised to get Daniel's stuff back from Filch and gave him a week's detention for breaking into Filch's office. Slughorn made his student promise to never use his talents for foolish purposes again, which Daniel took to heart and vowed not to let him down.[94]

Other Hogwarts staff[]

Daniel respected Headmistress Minerva McGonagall, who treated all students under her sternly yet fairly. When Daniel started a fight with Cassandra and the Frey twins, McGonagall broke it up and defended Daniel when Cassandra derided him for his family's criminal history, stating one should not be judged for their upbringing. The Headmistress then gave Daniel detention for his own bad behaviour.[62] Daniel and his friends even made a birthday cake for McGonagall to show their appreciation.[102]

Daniel thought highly of his Herbology professor, Neville Longbottom, who was kind and fair to all his students. Daniel knew of the Battle of Hogwarts and Professor Longbottom's role in it, calling him a hero, and disliked how Linderina Crane and Victor Gridley believed he could be associated with the Nocturnal Order of Tricks and Magical Exhibitions. Daniel tried to protect the professor from being framed as a NOTME member, but complicated forces prevented him from doing so and Daniel had to rescue him and Esme from Gridley. Longbottom was very understanding about Daniel's role in the mess since he was being blackmailed. Daniel was curious about Longbottom's time as a student and even looked into Longbottom's former bullies after the professor relayed his own experience with bullying.[82]

Rubeus Hagrid was a good teacher and friend to Daniel and his peers, as they often came by to help him outside of class assignments and occasionally sought his knowledge on certain topics. Hagrid thought well of Daniel and knew of his excellent potion-making skills. Whenever Hagrid needed a potion for his magical creatures, Daniel was happy to lend his help to heal them or keep them under control.[37][38] However, Daniel was usually exasperated by Hagrid's menagerie of dangerous pets and was baffled by the types of creatures he used for his Care of Magical Creatures class.[83][64] Daniel would get annoyed by how some of Hagrid's pets would wander off and cause trouble for him.[103] Hagrid also trusted Daniel enough to introduce him to his half-brother, Grawp. Daniel was shocked and wary to see the young giant and snarked that Hagrid's ideas were going to be the death of him someday.[104]

Like most students, Daniel disliked Argus Filch for his unpleasant personality and how he seemed to "have it out" for Daniel since his enrolment in Hogwarts.[22] While Daniel was not afraid of rebelling against Filch, he would avoid being around the caretaker and receiving detention from him whenever possible. Daniel and his peers' habit of trouble-making made Filch eager to shackle them and throw them in the dungeons, which they were spared due to timely intervention from the other Hogwarts staff.[105] When he was able to, Filch would give Daniel and his friends extra tasks to do in detention.[82]

Elliot Evers[]

Daniel Page: "You want me to join NOTME?"
Elliot Evers: "I didn't say that. I want you to join...me."
Daniel Page: "Why?"
Elliot Evers: "Oh Daniel-why do you think I spent so much time with you this year? You and I are very much the same. I need someone like you by my side. And you need me."
— Elliot's special interest in Daniel[src]

Daniel possessed a complex relationship with Elliot, which started to form even before they officially met. After his mother was falsely accused of being part of NOTME, Daniel began to passively support NOTME's goal of sharing magic with Muggles. In his third year, Daniel's entanglement with Elliot started after being dragged into NOTME's conflict with Victor Gridley, who was an old associate of his mother. Elliot stole a Skeleton Key and Daniel was blackmailed into recovering it for Gridley. When Gridley staged an attack in Hogsmeade, Daniel first encountered Elliot wearing his NOTME disguise and duelled him with his friends.[14] Since then, Elliot kept an watchful eye on Daniel and his friends, developing a shine to the younger boy. They officially met after Elliot rescued Daniel and his friends from some Acromantulas in the Forbidden Forest. Daniel was initially suspicious of Elliot and thought he was spying on them. At Esme's request, Elliot took Daniel under his wing and Daniel ended up warming to Elliot as a mentor.[41]

While Elliot taught him some advanced magic, gave him advice and protected him from bullies, his influence on Daniel eventually turned out to be negative. As Daniel's friends noted, Daniel was changing in concerning ways and a lot of Elliot's words came off as dubious. Elliot even confronted Daniel's closest friends and claimed that they didn't understand Daniel, even duelling them to prevent them from reaching Daniel when he was using a Boggart to deal with his emotional turmoil.[42] Despite his friends' warnings, Daniel defended Elliot's actions at every turn, but his opinion of his senior turned sour after Daniel figured out Elliot was part of NOTME. During a private talk, Elliot admitted to purposely leaving clues for Daniel to learn his secret and that he saw him as a kindred spirit. As Esme was in danger at the time, Daniel requested Elliot's help, who took advantage of the situation and agreed if Daniel agreed to join his "new order". Due to Elliot wanting to wait until Gridley made a move, a frustrated Daniel stole the Skeleton Key behind his back and gave his identity to Gridley as payback. While angered by this, Elliot was also impressed by Daniel's clever play in tricking the British Ministry of Magic, stopping Gridley, and gaining leverage over him. In the end, Daniel joined Elliot and NOTME, on the condition he treat Daniel as an equal, did not lie to him, and made sure his mother was safe for the rest of her sentence in Azkaban.[58][8]

During his fourth year, Daniel worked diligently to brew potions for Elliot's reformed NOTME, but he eventually received news of his mother's prison sentence being abruptly extended due to "new evidence". Seeing it as a betrayal of their deal, Daniel severed ties with Elliot, but Elliot continued to manipulate Daniel by breaking Kaleena out of Azkaban to win back his trust.[8][60]

Victor Gridley[]

Victor Gridley: "Quite proud of you, she was, and had big plans. It's a shame how things turned out"
Daniel Page: "I don't know what you're talking about."
Victor Gridley: "Come now, Daniel, there's not need to hide who we are. A certain moral flexibility is nothing to be ashamed of."
— Gridley condescending Daniel[src]

Gridley was an old criminal associate of his mother and a personal enemy for Daniel, who held the man in great contempt. Daniel met Gridley once as a child, but was too young to remember.[14] Before Daniel's third year began, Gridley sent his underlings to spy on Daniel and Esme, as he was contemplating on how to use Daniel to retrieve his Skeleton Key from NOTME. Daniel sensed what was going on and attempted to get to the bottom of it, only to botch Victor's trap to draw out NOTME, which angered him into dropping all pretences and directly summoning Daniel to him. Having been stalked and attacked by his minions, Daniel disliked Gridley immediately and was furious that Gridley kept calling his mother a criminal, as well as insinuating Daniel was one too. Daniel was not afraid of Gridley and stood up to him, but was coerced into his demands because he threatened to unleash a Dementor on Esme.[55]

While all their exchanges were riddled with hostility, Gridley took amusement in Daniel's aggression and would praise him whenever he showed his sharp mind. Gridley encouraged Daniel to give into his darker side, trying to corrupt the young boy, and compared him to Kaleena. Daniel resisted Gridley's attempts to influence him and made his own plan to subvert Gridley, which he eventually succeeded in with the help of his friends.[55]

Etymology[]

  • The name "Daniel" comes from the Hebrew name דָּנִיֵּאל (Daniyyel) meaning "God is my judge".
  • As a name, "Page" is of Latin origin from Byzantine "Págius" (young helper / mate of young nobles), derived from the Greek "Paidion" (child). A page in medieval households was usually a young boy whose service was the first step in his training as a knight. Use may possibly indicate an ancestor who was a page.[106]

Behind the scenes[]

  • It is possible that he was related to Grant Page.
  • Daniel does not have a set House. He will be sorted into the House that the player chooses to be in.
    • In an early development stage of the game, he and Ivy wear Slytherin robes regardless of the player's house.[107][108]
  • For some reason, Daniel's necklace does not appear on his character model on high graphic setting, only appearing when the settings are low.
  • Rob DeBorde implied that the trio (the player, Ivy, Daniel) in Harry Potter: Magic Awakened were mirroring the Golden Trio.[109]
    • Like Ron Weasley, Daniel and Ivy were very loyal, strong and humorous people,[110][111] but sometimes immature and insensitive.
    • Like Hermione Granger, Daniel wanted to be best at all things magical[112] and Ivy liked to show her abilities.[112] They were not afraid to rebel against their friends and often tended to argue. Daniel was also the best in the trio at potions and would sometimes brew potions for his friends.
    • Like Harry Potter, they were both fiercely brave, but often had short tempers and acted impulsively. They also experienced social isolation, Daniel was in a position of having to make ethical choices, and Ivy showed signs of insomnia (nightmares). They were all half-blood wizards who had grown up with Muggles.
  • Both his Patronus form, a black cat, and Ivy Warrington's, a pug, are animals that head writer Rob DeBorde has owned.
