- — Gagwilde's motto, as inscribed on the portrait depicting him and Professor Aragon playing chess[src]
Professor Brian Gagwilde was a wizard, a Headmaster of Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry,[8] and a Wizard's Chess master.[6]
Biography[]
Lifetime[]
Gagwilde was born at some point prior to 1551.[1][2]
He wrote the book Jiggery Pokery and Hocus Pocus,[9][7] and became a Hogwarts Headmaster at some point.[8] He was also a fervent Wizard's Chess competitor, and used to play with his contemporary Walter Aragon. He also used to play with Aberforth Dumbledore at the Hog's Head Inn, until he suffered such a crushing defeat that he stopped playing the game altogether.[6]
Post-mortem[]
Professor Gagwilde died at some point before 1992.[4] In addition to the portrait of the professor hung in the Grand Staircase,[6][1] another one, in which he was depicted as playing a game of chess with Walter Aragon, was placed in the Headmaster's office after his passing to give advice to the current Head.[8] He was a contemporary of Aragon and Aberforth Dumbledore, having played chess with them in life, but his exact date of death is not known.

Thus, Gagwilde must have died sometime in or before the 1989–1990 school year, given his portrait's appearance in the Marble Staircase in Harry Potter: Hogwarts Mystery.
