John A. Lowell (1743-1802) was a federal judge on the United States Circuit Court for the First Circuit and the United States District Court for the District of Massachusetts. Lowell joined the First Circuit in 1801 after an appointment from John Adams. He joined the District of Massachusetts in 1789 after an appointment from George Washington. At the time of appointment, he served as a judge on the Massachusetts Appeals Court. He served until his death on May 6, 1802.[1]

Judicial nominations and appointments

First Circuit

Lowell was nominated to the United States Circuit Court for the First Circuit by President John Adams on February 18, 1801. He was confirmed by the Senate on February 20, 1801, and received commission that same day. He served until his death on May 6, 1802.[1]

District of Massachusetts

Lowell was nominated to the District of Massachusetts by President George Washington Nominated by George Washington on September 24, 1789, to a new seat authorized by 1 Stat. 73. He was confirmed by the Senate on September 26, 1789, and received commission on September 26, 1789. His service was terminated on February 20, 1801, due to appointment to another judicial position. Lowell was succeeded in this position by John Davis.[1]
