James Duane was the first federal judge on the United States District Court for the District of New York. He joined the court in 1789 after an appointment by President George Washington. At the time of his appointment, he was the Mayor of New York City. He resigned on March 17, 1794 and passed away on February 1, 1797.[1]

He was nominated by President George Washington on September 25, 1789 and was confirmed by the Senate that same day. He received commission on September 26, 1789. He resigned on March 17, 1794. He was succeeded to this post by John Laurance.[1]
