Although it had been occupied for over ten thousand years by indigenous peoples, from the 18th century onward, European powers considered the territory of Alaska ripe for exploitation and trade. The United States purchased Alaska from the Russian Empire on March 30, 1867, for 7.2million U.S. dollars at approximately two cents per acre ($4.74/km2). The area went through several administrative changes before becoming organized as a territory on May 11, 1912. It was admitted as the 49th state of the U.S. on January 3, 1959.
2018 marks the 100th Anniversary of the Migratory Bird Treaty Act. In celebration of birds, we are posting videos about each of the species in our aviary.

For a few years I have been feeding pigeons at the top of the ramp here in Aurora Harbor, today I found this pigeon with toes self amputating from string/thread wrapped around them very infected and needing a friend like me ♥ I will have to do some minor surgery tomorrow with a magnifying lens and razor blade to remove the thread the best I can, then 2-3 times a day with vetericyn (http://vetericyn.com/) which will keep the infection at bay while this poor girl heals up. The last pigeon I rescued took 3 months of this and was not nearly as bad as this one. Tonight since its so late I gently wrapped her in a towel and washed her wounds - it felt so good to her she extended each of her infected legs out to my fingers, she knows I am trying to help her...perhaps the last one I rescued and released and see each day told her where to come...she let me pick her up, and needs my help ♥ Special thanks to Tom Leigh-Kendall from the "Rescue Pigeon" Gabby ♥
