Although it had been occupied for over ten thousand years by indigenous peoples, from the 18th century onward, European powers considered the territory of Alaska ripe for exploitation and trade. The United States purchased Alaska from the Russian Empire on March 30, 1867, for 7.2million U.S. dollars at approximately two cents per acre ($4.74/km2). The area went through several administrative changes before becoming organized as a territory on May 11, 1912. It was admitted as the 49th state of the U.S. on January 3, 1959.
Beer Trains are AWESOME!!! - [Living In Alaska 222]
Ever wonder what it's like to ride a beer train? Well then, come take a virtual ride with us on Alaska Railroad's 2015 HooDoo Choo Choo Beer Train! As some of you may recall, last year we rode the Great Alaskan Beer Train out of Anchorage that broke down half way and left us stranded on the tracks for several hours with a seemingly endless supply of beer and fun people to party with (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xa8WdD9lNU8). Needless to say, that was an AMAZING experience! But what made HooDoo Choo Choo totally different and yet still a great experience for us was it's greater focus on the food and beer tasting. Unlike The Great Alaskan Beer Train, HooDoo Choo Choo had self assigned festival style seating which kept us nearer to our tables. This was mainly because the food was su...
If you visit Anchorage, Alaska (and you're over 21 years old) then you have to stop by Midnight Sun Brewing Company! They're my FAVORITE microbrewery and they make some of the best beers I've ever tasted. I've tried many great beers from around the world but Midnight Sun's Hibernator is by far the best and it's even better from the tap! If you live here in Alaska, then check these guys out! Hibernator isn't on tap right now but you can still pick it up in the bottle.
(No, they didn't pay me to say this. I'm just a genuine fan of their beer.)

Unlike The Great Alaskan Beer Train, HooDoo Choo Choo had self assigned festival style seating which kept us nearer to our tables. This was mainly because the food was superb and seemed to come quite regularly. So you wouldn't want to miss out on a tasty snack. It also helped that HooDoo Brewing's beer was fresh and delicious. So even though most of us were stuck at our seats, it wasn't hard to find ourselves socializing with the others around us. HooDoo's stout was my favorite. One of the best stouts I've had in fact! It's a must try if you're ever in Fairbanks. In the end, the sketchy 5 hour 2-way drive across the frozen tundra was absolutely worth it. In fact, any beer train in Alaska is worth the drive if you can manage it. Lucky for us, the next beer train is in Anchorage and it's only weeks away! While The Great Alaskan Beer Train probably won't break down like it did last year... I definitely wouldn't complain if it did.
