Although it had been occupied for over ten thousand years by indigenous peoples, from the 18th century onward, European powers considered the territory of Alaska ripe for exploitation and trade. The United States purchased Alaska from the Russian Empire on March 30, 1867, for 7.2million U.S. dollars at approximately two cents per acre ($4.74/km2). The area went through several administrative changes before becoming organized as a territory on May 11, 1912. It was admitted as the 49th state of the U.S. on January 3, 1959.
Life on Alaska's Most Remote Island (surreal experience) 🇺🇸
Far from the Alaskan mainland is a secluded island in the Bering Strait. Here the views span for an eternity, Russia is within sight, and the Siberian Yupik People are living a unique lifestyle removed from everyone. Come join me to see what this unknown sliver of America looks like on the ground.

What It's Like To Live In The Diomedes, The Two Tiny Islands In The Middle Of Russia And Alaska

For a few dozen Alaskan Iñupiat natives, it is possible to see Russia from their house. Just below the Arctic Circle lie two land masses between Russia and Alaska, the Diomede Islands. Small, rugged, and surrounded by ice and harsh seas, the islands are located off the Alaskan coast in the middle of the Bering Strait. Little Diomede is considered Alaskan territory, while Big Diomede, the Russian island, has remained uninhabited since the Cold War.

Alaska's Native-Owned Island (need permission to enter) 🇺🇸
Far from the Alaskan mainland and close to Russia is Saint Lawrence Island, a remote land inhabited by the Siberian Yupik People. Here they still live off of a whale hunt, reindeer, walrus, and halibut (they have one store too).
The Natives have successfully managed to retain control of their land and keep it restricted from the rest of America and the outside world. Join me as we meet the locals and learn about the Siberian Yupik people who have endured their harsh climate and retained some of their ways of life for thousands of years.

Living on a remote Alaska island | How we survive
While my wife was spending Christmas in Fairbanks I knew we still needed to get some meat in the freezer. Me and Capitan Funk took off in search of Sitka blacktail walking along the beach. We seen a few but could only get one in the boat. We also prepare for this artic front that is bringing some cold temps to not only Alaska but the rest of the lower 48.

Life on a remote Alaska island after wind storm.
Two weeks of wind storms combined with 19 foot tides wreaks havoc on our Alaska island.
We haven't been to town in over a month and need supplies. Plus we have some much needed mail to pick up.
Now it's time for clean up and to get the boat launched.

You CAN walk from US to Russia! The Diomedes, in the Bering Straight Alaska is rarely talked about.
Original vid posted to TikTok: @map_nerd - 20M liked it so figured I'd share with you too!...
You probably know that Alaska and Russia are relatively close – with just the Bering Sea between them, they’re only about 55 miles apart.
But there’s an American town that is much closer, just a couple miles from Russia. And In winter, they can actually walk there, but they don’t… I don’t think.
Diomede is an American town of about 100 people on a small island in the Bering Sea called Little Diomede Island.
It is one of the two Diomede Islands that sit about halfway between mainland Alaska and mainland Russia.
The western island – Big Diomede – is Russian. The eastern island – Little Diomede – is American. They are 2.5 miles apart. The only thing between them is water. In winter, the notor...

In winter, the notoriously cold water freezes up, creating a 2.5 mile ice bridge that’s walkable. (I’m told it takes about a half hour). So technically you CAN walk from the US to Russia.
If you do, you also instantaneously step into the future bc Big Diomede is 21 hours ahead of Little Diomede. The international date line falls right smack between them so you can literally step a whole day ahead.
I like finding interesting things on maps. Hope you do too.
