Alaska is a periodical devoted to news and discussion of issues and features of and from Alaska. Most of its readership consists of persons outside of Alaska who are interested in the Alaskan way of life.
History and profile
Alaska magazine was founded in 1935 in Ketchikan, Alaska, by Emery Fridolf Tobin (1895-1977) and J. Ray Roady (1907-1997). Tobin established himself as an opponent of Alaska statehood, although this may have been contradictory, given his ties to the Democratic party and the fact that he and Roady served as State Representatives in 1959.
Alaska magazine was originally titled the Alaska Sportsman Magazine, a name it retained until 1969. It operated much then as it does today, being sold through newsstand sales and subscriptions. The major difference in its early days was the fact that paper stock to print the magazine arrived via steamship, posing the threat of delays, and it operated out of a small basement. Another major difference is that the editorial and sales offices have moved to Alaska's economic center, the city of Anchorage.
The Alaska was a record breaking British passenger liner that won the Blue Riband for the Guion Line as the fastest liner on the Atlantic in 1882. She was a slightly larger and faster edition of Guion's Arizona and in 1883 became the first liner to make the crossing to New York in under a week. However, Alaska burned 250 tons of coal per day, as compared to Arizona's already high 135 tons. Built by John Elder & Company of Glasgow, she carried 350 first class passengers and 1,000 steerage. Her passengers included Hugh Simpson Rodham: future grandfather of Hillary Rodham Clinton, who travelled in steerage to America with his mother Bella and seven siblings as a toddler in October 1882. As in the case of Arizona, Stephen Guion also personally owned Alaska.
Alaska completed 100 voyages when Guion suspended sailings in 1894. She proved difficult to sell and was finally chartered in 1897 by Cia. Transatlanticia Espanola as a troop transport. In 1899, Alaska was sold for scrap, but was resold to the Barrow shipyard where she was used as an accommodation hulk until broken up in 1902.
Written by Steven Tyler, it is a hard rocking song focusing on sex and sleaze, with a chorus of "I'm a bad, lonely school boy, and I'm a rat, and it's too bad, can't get me none of that." The song starts off with a fast drum beat and basic guitar riff, then slows down, and builds up once again, with Steven Tyler's rapid-fire, fierce lyrics accompanying. The song's lyrical content and musical styles are in the vein of "blooze", a grittier hard rock version of blues music, often with lyrics focused on sex, drugs, and urban life.
S.O.S. is a traditional Swedishappetizer. It stands for "smör, ost och sill", which describes its main ingredients: butter, cheese and herring. It is usually eaten with schnapps Akvavit.
The Chronicles of Life and Death is the third full-length studio album by Good Charlotte, released on October 5, 2004, through Daylight Records. The album was released with two different versions: a "Life" and a "Death" version which came with different cover art (designed by guitarist Billy Martin) and a special bonus track. There is also a Japanese version that has a different cover art as well as the special bonus tracks from both the "Life" and "Death" versions, including the hidden track "Wounded" at the end of the album. The Chronicles of Life and Death is the first and only album to feature Chris Wilson on drums.
Composition
The album has been widely considered a departure from their previous two albums, mixing new elements such as lyrical topics into Good Charlotte's youthful sound. Some sources have referred to the album as "emo". The album has different music styles. The opener track "Once Upon A Time: The Battle of Life and Death" is an instrumental opener with strings, a Japanese choir and an organ. "The Truth" is a piano ballad, and "I Just Wanna Live" has a hip hop beat with synthesized strings. Lyrically, the album also focuses on darker and more serious subject matter. "The World Is Black" is about apathy, "S.O.S" is about suicide, and "In This World (Murder) is about corporate greed.

Alaska 1282 Portland 737-9 MAX Door Failure 5 January 2024
Audio of Alaska Airlines pilot during emergency landing in Oregon
Investigators have asked the public to help find an airplane door that blew off an Alaska Airlines Boeing 737-9 Friday and likely fell near Beaverton’s Cedar Hills neighborhood.
The accident occurred shortly after a flight to Ontario, California, departed from Portland International Airport and the unused mid-cabin door that was plugged by an interior window panel came off of the airplane. The sudden decompression caused minor injuries to a person sitting near the hole but did not otherwise cause physical harm to the plane’s 171 passengers, officials have said.

For this 21-minute production, Todd traveled with Royal Wolf Lodge manager Nate Morris as they explored the Brooks and American rivers in SW Alaska.

For more than 80 years, CBC News has been the source Canadians turn to, to keep them informed about their communities, their country and their world. Through regional and national programming on multiple platforms, including CBC Television, CBC News Network, CBC Radio, CBCNews.ca, mobile and on-demand, CBC News and its internationally recognized team of award-winning journalists deliver the breaking stories, the issues, the analyses and the personalities that matter to Canadians.
Coming into our coldest month at the cabin we make it a priority to install a floor vent and fan to circulate warm air into the crawlspace. Stocking wood, exercising the pups and other various tasks fill the short daylight hours. We celebrate the winter solstice with a savory French stew slowly cooked on the wood stove and homemade blueberry mead.

We are stoked to be part of this episode of The Jig Life video series produced by Fish Alaska magazine. Fishing steelhead on jigs on the Situk spring of 2023. Steelhead fishing, technique and gear.
The latest from Catch Magazine features quintessential Alaskan dry fly fishing for rainbow trout on the famed Alaskan Brooks River and others within Katmai National Park.
Renown for its large brown bears, spawning sockeye and wild remote landscape, the Brooks River is a celebrity of Alaska. The opportunity to film here alongside feasting brown bears is one of Todd Moen’s dreams come true.
For this 21-minute production, Todd traveled with Royal Wolf Lodge manager Nate Morris as they explored the Brooks and American rivers in SW Alaska. In and out by floatplane from lakes to rivers, they dry fly fished the remote upper reaches of many untouched streams finding incredible insect hatches along the way only navigable by air.
A little different from most of his videos, this film includes some unique live narration, with Todd adding behind the scenes updates and in-action comments. He shares a bit of his own experience as he filmed this incredible Alaskan fishery.
Thanks to Nate Morris and the whole staff at Royal Wolf Lodge for making this possible. The excellent float plane navigation by Forrest Carpenter, Blake McIntosh and Danny Zito gave Todd, Nate and McKinley the opportunity to get in an create this video for Catch Magazine. Much gratitude for the generous support from R.L. Winston Fly Rods, Scientific Anglers and Skwala Fishing. For more information about the Brooks River, please check out Katmai National Park.

The first of many Alaska history articles Laurel Bill will write for Alaska Magazine appears in the November 2013 issue of this prestigious magazine. Laurel, author of the acclaimed Alaska history series Aunt Phil's Trunk, says she is excited to be writing for a magazine that her Alaska historian aunt wrote for when the magazine was known as The Alaska Sportsman.
This first article spotlights how the Alaska Native people adapted to the influx of miners during the Klondike Gold Rush during the late 1890s.
