Although it had been occupied for over ten thousand years by indigenous peoples, from the 18th century onward, European powers considered the territory of Alaska ripe for exploitation and trade. The United States purchased Alaska from the Russian Empire on March 30, 1867, for 7.2million U.S. dollars at approximately two cents per acre ($4.74/km2). The area went through several administrative changes before becoming organized as a territory on May 11, 1912. It was admitted as the 49th state of the U.S. on January 3, 1959.
New Jersey native Bob Harte is infamous across Alaska's interior for surviving more brushes with death than just about anyone in the wilderness. Bob has survived gunshot wounds, plane crashes and wildlife attacks during 40 years of isolated living in the bush. Declining health due to a battle with cancer has led Bob to a difficult decision. He must leave his remote home to seek the medical care he needs. As Bob says goodbye to Alaska, he talks about his big plans for the future and the next chapter of his life.

Climbing accident: mountaineer falls 1000-feet to his death from Alaskan peak
An experienced outdoorsmen fell to his death Sunday during a difficult climb at Mount Yukla in southeastern Alaska.
Dasan Marshall, 24, was climbing with a friend before the fatal fall. His friend called for emergency assistance.
Due to the rocky terrain, Alaska State Troopers had to call in the Air National Guard to retrieve Marshall’s body.
Marshall was enrolled at Alaska Pacific University's outdoors program. Back in Portland, he worked at Mountain Top, an outdoor goods store. His former employees took to social media to share their memories of Marshall.
"Every step we shared pushing up a mountainside or climbing will be memories I will never forget," his friend Sean Johnson wrote in a Facebook tribute.

Sitting in the dark, I can't forget Even now, I realize the time I'll never get Another story of the bitter pills of fate I can't go back again, I can't go back again But you asked me to love you and I did Traded my emotions for a contract to commit And when I got away I only got so far The other me is dead, I hear his voice inside my head And we were never alive and we won't be born again But I'll never survive with dead memories in my heart Dead memories in my heart Dead memories in my heart You told me to love you and I did Tied my soul into a knot and got me to submit So when I got away I only kept my scars The other me is gone now I don't know where I belong And we were never alive and we won't be born again But I'll never survive with dead memories in my heart Dead memories in my heart Dead memories in my heart Dead memories in my heart Dead visions in your name Dead fingers in my veins Dead memories in my heart Dead memories in my heart Dead memories in my heart
