In Putin's Russia, health care workers treating COVID-19 pay a deadly price
Russia has announced nearly 10,000 new COVID-19 infections in just the last day, bringing its national total close to 300,000. Half of the cases are in Moscow, where health care workers say protective gear and training for how to treat the disease are lacking. Meanwhile, there are questions about why Russia's official virus deaths are relatively low. Special correspondent Julia Chapman reports.

Can We Trust Russia's Low Coronavirus Infection Rate?
MOSCOW – The fight against coronavirus has stopped performances by the world famous Bolshoi Theater company, something that even World War II couldn’t do.
It’s part of Russia’s efforts to contain an outbreak which President Putin claims as “a whole is under control.”
For weeks, Russia only reported a handful of infections. Then on Monday, that number went from 63 to 93. The next day it was 114, and the day after 147.
The government jumped into action— closing the border to foreigners, banning gatherings of more than 50, and forcing residents returning from abroad to self-isolate. Muscovites responded by stockpiling, emptying supermarket shelves and wearing face masks.

Rollout of Russia's COVID-19 vaccine met with skepticism from some Russians
Russia’s Sputnik V COVID-19 vaccine is now being administered to the general population despite still being in Phase 3 trials. One Russian doctor says only 20 per cent of his patients want to be first in line to get it because of concerns over safety and efficacy. Some in the West have also been skeptical, but scientists in the U.K. have said the results of the Sputnik trials have been consistent with those of other vaccines.

The government jumped into action— closing the border to foreigners, banning gatherings of more than 50, and forcing residents returning from abroad to self-isolate. Muscovites responded by stockpiling, emptying supermarket shelves and wearing face masks.
But for some experts this response might be coming too late. Anastasia Vasilyeva, Head of an independent doctors union, Doctors Alliance told VICE News, “Across the country, there are a huge amount of patients with pneumonia … we cannot ignore the coincidence and link these pneumonia cases with Coronavirus. In my opinion, there are tens of thousands of cases that we don’t know about.”
She's not the only one who is worried that the rate of infection in a country of 146 million people, that borders China on one side and Europe on the other, seems suspiciously low. Especially because most people who arrived from abroad haven’t been tested.
Although Putin claims Russia has curtailed the spread of the epidemic he’s called for an increase in the production of tests and more supplies of medicine and equipment. The government has gone so far as to order prisoners to start making face masks.
But for Vasilyeva, the national response isn’t going far enough: “Russia is absolutely not ready for the epidemic. I am more than sure that even serious cases and deaths will be simply hidden from the population.”

Russia's health ministry revealed new data on the survival rates of the COVID-19 virus, suggesting that the virus lives longer in wet and cold environments.
Meanwhile, Israel confirmed that Pfizer's COVID-19 vaccine significantly reduces transmissibility.
Choi Min-jung reports.
Studies from Russia have unveiled new findings for the survival rates of the COVID-19 virus.
Data released on Monday by the health ministry, showed that the virus could live up to 3 days on dry surfaces, and 7 days in damp conditions.
The findings also revealed the hotter the temperature, the shorter the virus lives.
It was found that the virus can last for more than two weeks at 4 degrees Celsius, a day at 37 degrees Celsius, 45 minutes at 56 degrees Celsius and 5 minutes at 70 degrees Celsius.
Meanwhile, Israel on the same day revealed that Pfizer and BioNTech's COVID-19 vaccine significantly reduces the chance of transmitting the virus.
Citing data from the MyHeritage lab, The Times of Israel reported that patients aged over 60 had 60-percent less virus loads than the age group between 40 to 59.
This comes as the majority of the 60-plus age group in Israel have already been vaccinated with first doses at least.
Although the results are based on incomplete data, experts say it is enough to show that Pfizer and BioNTech's vaccine reduces transmission once people are vaccinated.
Regarding the controversy surrounding AstraZeneca's efficacy rate against the South African variant, the chief executive of the COVAX co-leader, Gavi alliance, suggested it was too early to dismiss the vaccine.
According to Reuters, the chief said there were no plans to reject the vaccine for now as studies are still ongoing.
Initially, South Africa paused its rollout of the vaccine, after studies conducted there revealed that the vaccine does not work well against the country's variant.
