Kill the Messenger: How the CIA's Crack-cocaine Controversy Destroyed Journalist Gary Webb (New York: Nation Books, 2006) is a biography of investigative journalist Gary Webb, focusing on his 1996 "Dark Alliance" investigative series in the San Jose Mercury News. The series linked the 1980s crack cocaine trade in the United States and the CIA-backed Nicaraguan Contras.
Based on the true story of journalist Gary Webb, the film takes place in the mid-1990s. Webb uncovered the CIA's alleged role in importing crack cocaine into the U.S. to secretly fund the Nicaraguan contra rebels. Despite enormous pressure to stay away, Webb chose to pursue the story and went public with his evidence, publishing the series called "Dark Alliance". He then experienced a vicious smear campaign fueled by the CIA, during which he found himself defending his integrity, his family, and his life.
Although it had been occupied for over ten thousand years by indigenous peoples, from the 18th century onward, European powers considered the territory of Alaska ripe for exploitation and trade. The United States purchased Alaska from the Russian Empire on March 30, 1867, for 7.2million U.S. dollars at approximately two cents per acre ($4.74/km2). The area went through several administrative changes before becoming organized as a territory on May 11, 1912. It was admitted as the 49th state of the U.S. on January 3, 1959.
Gary Corbett kills a pair of claim jumpers who did likewise to his father. He is charged with murder, but cannot be taken to Juneau to stand trial until the weather permits. Marshal John Masters keeps him in town until the prisoner can be moved.
Roxie Reagan, who sings at Tom LaRue's saloon, falls in love with Corbett, but she is trapped in a loveless marriage to John Reagan, an alcoholic has-been actor. LaRue also is in love with Roxie, and he and a local judge are suspected by Corbett of being in cahoots with the claim jumpers.
LaRue tries to frame Corbett for another murder, then sets the jail on fire. John Reagan courageously comes to Corbett's rescue, losing his own life in the process. The marshal deals with LaRue, but suddenly reveals that he is the one who has been backing the murderous claim jumpers all along. Corbett manages to get the better of Masters, then sets sail for San Francisco with his bride-to-be, Roxie.

Made it, we have made it this far
so i'm not giving it up,
you can hate me you can hate me as much as you like
as long as you're not in my way
things will go as i say
the tables will turn
there's so much to learn
Darkness through my mind
i'd be a liar if i said that i'm fine
it's not easy to just let it pass by
I have given it a try
but we're not falling to separate pieces
tighten teeth in this empty street filled with deceit
Watch me
watch me closely
watch the way that I try to get something out of my way
do you think you can do this
you can't do this
you're nothing but zero to me
Inside my empty heart
lies a cold-blooded human built on sorrow
another year passed by
everyday had no tomorrow
I brought this down to you
so you can understand it
you've entered the lion's nest
with no exit
I'm gonna make you confess
I'll make you pray for your safety
what do you say
cause things will end
This time i'll be your king
with my hands around your throat
and watch your face get sallow
you're so shallow
Darkness through my mind
i'd be a liar if i said that i'm fine
Darkness through my mind
i'd be a liar if i said that i'm fine
it's not easy to just let it pass by
I have given it a try
but we're not falling to separate pieces
tighten teeth in this empty street filled with deceipt
I'll make you pay

The messenger came with bad news from the front Said "the soldiers are starving and their swords are all blunt They need a show of support or some futile sign That's what they told me to tell you, not even the words are mine..." The messenger came with bad news from the war Said "the fine young men forgot who they were fighting for They don't wanna be stars on your tv screen That's the general feeling, please don't blame it on me" And the people said "one and one is two There's nothing left for us to do But since we can blame it all on you We will kill the messenger" The messenger came with bad news from the town Said "the phone-lines are on strike and the doormen are all down They've turned your den of thieves into a temple They need someone of stature to set them an example" And the people said "two and two is four Don't tell us anymore We all know the score We must kill the messenger" Someone brought the news to the messenger's folks He said "your son's been killed two times" They said "is that a joke? " He said "no He was he victim of ignorant minds I hate to bring such bad news, please don't think me unkind" And the family said "one and one is two There's nothing left for us to do But since you're here and we can blame it on you We will kill the messenger
