The Trench is a location that appears in the film The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie and its many adaptations.
Description[]
The Trench is a massive channel filled with several different Trench monsters and skeletons. There is a rickety wooden staircase leading down to it. It is on the path to Shell City and it is beyond The County Line. Beyond The Trench, there is a long valley with geysers and a valley full of trash, the latter of which marks the outskirts of Shell City.
The Trench is very similar to other Trenches such as Rock Bottom and The Abyss from "20,000 Patties Under the Sea."
In the PC version of The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie video game, The Trench is a set of foggy abyssal plains instead, with no sign of monsters anywhere. There are still skulls littered around the area though.
Role in movie[]
The Trench is an obstacle that SpongeBob and Patrick have to pass through to get to Shell City. Both of them jump down into the pit after Princess Mindy "turns them into men." When they are at the bottom they sing the song "Now That We're Men" and befriend the Trench Monsters who help lead them out of The Trench and into the valley.
Role in video game[]
It serves as the main location of the level "Now That We're Men..." in the console versions, where SpongeBob and Patrick must get through it and fight a bunch of monsters before they can proceed to Shell City. Here, the player meets their first Popper, and have to go inside several huge monsters to progress.
In the GBA version, it is the fourth world of the game, and SpongeBob and Patrick fight Dennis and get captured by the Cyclops here instead of on the other side in the dirty valley.
In the PC version, the 'trench' is the main area for Chapter 5: "Entrenched!". The plains in the 'trench' are too foggy for SpongeBob and Patrick to traverse, so they have to find a way to clear the fog so they can progress on to Shell City. Along the way, they come across a mystery at Hotel Deep Six, a shipwreck hotel just down the road, and investigate the disappearance of one of the tenant's pearls, which involves an orb that belongs in a set of caverns at the back of the plains. Once they solve the case and obtain the orb, SpongeBob traverses the caverns to return it, allowing the orb to clear the fog and SpongeBob and Patrick to proceed on their journey.
