Production[]

On March 4, 2020, Bakish announced that Paramount Global would produce two feature-length SpongeBob SquarePants spin-off movies for Netflix, representing a "profitable, low-risk rental business with set margins," which he said translates to content ownership for separate distribution down the road, including consumer products and recreation.[2]

"So, we're convinced that both an O&O [owned and operated] and a third-party studio strategy is absolutely right for ViacomCBS," Bakish said. "We believe that maximizing the value of our content asset, that is what you see us executing in 2020 and beyond." Remember that ViacomCBS is now Paramount+.

Asked about updates on the films, Vincent Waller replied that they were in the writing phase. He also stated that "Pearl will be in at least one. But nothing is final yet and a lot can change between concept and delivery."[3]

Natalie Franscioni-Karp, a visual development artist on the movie, lists it as a "CG Feature Film" called Plankton.[4] A prototype logo of the film was also present on her portfolio.

On February 15, 2022, it was confirmed that the movie will be released exclusively on Paramount+ in the United States.[5][6]

On June 6, 2024, it was announced on Twitter that the film would be released in 2025, the first picture of the film was released, and that Spot would be appearing in the movie.[7] That same day, the movie was officially confirmed to be titled Plankton: The Movie and that Dave Needham would be directing it. The script was also being written by Doug Lawrence, Kaz, and Chris Viscardi.[8]

However, on August 8, 2024, the entire movie was leaked on 4chan, following a hack into a dubbing studio called Iyuno, which also caused mass leaking of numerous unreleased Netflix movies and series.

Mikros Animation, who has done work on The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge on the Run, have announced they'll be doing the animation for the film.[9]
