Dr. Mario (JP) is the main character in the Dr. Mario games. He is an alter-ego of Mario, using vitamins to kill off viruses. He first appeared in the Nintendo Entertainment System game, of the same name.

According to the comic book story "The Doctor Is In... Over His Head" (published in Nintendo Comics System Featuring #9), Mario got the job as an assistant to the Mushroom Kingdom Hospital's regular doctor, Waldo Bloom. After he successfully defeats the first attack from the three Viruses, the story has Mario take on the occupation full-time due to Dr. Bloom taking an interest in golf, which he is shown to be very slow at playing.

Super Smash Bros. series[]

In Super Smash Bros. Melee, Dr. Mario appeared as an unlockable character with a similar moveset as Mario. Dr. Mario is a little heavier and slower than Mario, with a shorter reach and more powerful smash attacks, and throws Megavitamins instead of Mario's fireballs. In addition, there are three trophies of Dr. Mario, as well as a trophy of the three viruses from his original game, and a trophy of the Megavitamin. Dr. Mario did not appear in the sequel, Super Smash Bros. Brawl.  However, he returned in the next sequels, Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS and Wii U and Super Smash Bros. Ultimate.
