Kazuya Mishima is a character from the Tekken series. He is the main protagonist of the first and seventh game, in which he seeks revenge against his father Heihachi for throwing him off a cliff when he was younger. As the series progresses, Kazuya becomes antagonistic or anti-heroic (depending on each game) as he seeks more power, which puts him at odds with his son Jin Kazama.

Super Smash Bros. Ultimate[]

Kazuya was announced as a playable character in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate at E3 2021. Kazuya's design is based on his default appearance as of Tekken 5, although he also features an alternate costume based on his default appearance in Tekken 7 and the opening cinematic of Tekken Tag Tournament.

According to Super Smash Bros. series creator and director Masahiro Sakurai, Kazuya was chosen over his father, Heihachi Mishima, due to his Devil Gene and its applicability to his moveset. Due to hailing from a traditional fighting game series like Ryu, Ken Masters and Terry Bogard, Kazuya also features command-input moves and will always face his opponent when there is one remaining (teammates included if Team Attack is on).

Attacks[]

Kazuya has a unique fighter ability called Rage. It is indicated by Kazuya being enveloped in a red aura after reaching 100% (25% of his total health in Stamina Mode). In the Tekken series, Rage increases the damage output of his moves, which is emulated with a 1.1× damage multiplier in SSBU. It also grants access to the unique Rage Drive, which will end the Rage state when executed. There is no time limit on the Rage state, although it will end if Kazuya receives more than a certain amount of damage or misses Rage Drive repeatedly. Rage will end when (Number of missed grabs or down specials × 110) + (Damage received during Rage × 17.6)) ≥ 650. In context, with no missed Rage Drives, it will take 36.93% to force Kazuya out of Rage. Rage can only be triggered once per stock.

  • Down Special: Heaven's Door

Trivia[]

  • Kazuya is the only fighter to lack a victory theme. Instead, the announcer (Josh Keller) from Tekken 7 simply says "Kazuya Mishima wins" as a callback to the Tekken series lacking victory themes during a character's win screen.
  • Kazuya is currently the only fighter in the entire series whose game of origin is not playable on a Nintendo console.
  • Kazuya is the only DLC fighter to not make any appearance on the Nintendo Switch outside of Ultimate.
