Charizard(JP) is a species of Pokémon in the series of the same name. It is a dual-type Fire/Flying Pokémon that made its first appearance in the first generation games Red and Blue. It is the final evolution of Charmander. Charizard can Mega Evolve into either Mega Charizard X and Mega Charizard Y with Charizardite X and Charizardite Y respectively. The former changes its Flying type for Dragon while the Y form remains the same typing. It has a Gigantamax form. Charizard appears in all Super Smash Bros. games. It was a Poké Ball Pokémon in the first two games and playable since Super Smash Bros. Brawl (along with the Pokémon Trainer in Brawl and Ulitmate, and a solo character in 3DS/Wii U).
Physiology and Behavior[]
Charizard is a draconic, bipedal Pokémon. It is primarily orange with a cream underside from the chest to the tip of its tail. It has a long neck, small blue eyes, slightly raised nostrils, and two horn-like structures protruding from the back of its rectangular head. There are two fangs visible in its upper jaw when its mouth is closed. Two large wings with blue-green undersides sprout from its back, and a horn-like appendage juts out from the top of the third joint of each wing. A single wing-finger is visible through the center of each wing membrane. Charizard's arms are short and skinny compared to its robust belly, and each limb has three white claws. It has stocky legs with cream-colored soles on each of its plantigrade feet. The tip of its long, tapering tail burns with a sizable flame, which can intensify to a blue flame if Charizard is irritated.
Charizard flies in search of powerful opponents to battle, and its fire will burn hotter as it gains experience. Its fiery breath is capable of melting boulders and massive glaciers, and has been known to accidentally cause forest fires. Though its fiery breath is hot, it never turns it on any opponent weaker than itself. Charizard typically inhabits mountains and valleys, such as the Charicific Valley in Johto. The anime has shown that only a weak Charizard would show off its power. It also showed that Charizard can swim underwater, with Pokémon Origins further showing that the flame on the tip of the tail can still keep burning underwater. Charizard's wings can carry it to an altitude of 4,600 feet (1,400 meters). Charizard lives in herds with Charmander. As shown in Pokémon Sleep, Charizard is known to sleep in a incredibly relaxed position . The is because Charizard is very confident in its own power. Some Charizard that are occasionally seen sleeping flat on their backs may be a sign that Charizard is very strong.
Even though Charizard originally couldn’t learn the move Fly, Trainers have been shown riding Charizard in official artwork dating back to the original Carddass Trading Cards of the year 1997. Ash Ketchum himself was shown riding his Charizard already in the first two seasons of the anime. Eventually, in Pokémon Yellow: Special Pikachu Edition, Charizard became able to learn Fly and has since been frequently depicted as a Pokémon able to carry people on its back to fly them to distant areas. In Alola, Charizard is a Ride Pokémon called Charizard Glide, being used by the natives to fly around the region or make deliveries.
Mega Charizard X[]
As Mega Charizard X, its body and legs are more physically fit, though its arms remain thin. Its skin turns black with a sky-blue underside and soles. Two spikes with blue tips curve upward from the front and back of each shoulder, while the tips of its horns sharpen, turn blue, and curve slightly upward. Its brow and claws are larger, and its eyes are now red. It has two small, fin-like spikes under each horn and two more down its lower neck. The finger disappears from the wing membrane, and the lower edges are divided into large, rounded points. The third joint of each wing-arm is adorned with a claw-like spike. Mega Charizard X breathes blue flames out the sides of its mouth, and the flame on its tail now burns blue. It is said that its new power turns it black and creates more intense flames.
Mega Charizard Y[]
As Mega Charizard Y, it becomes sleeker in appearance but retains its normal coloration. It has three pointed horns on the back of its head, the middle of which is longer. Its snout has larger fangs and a ridge on the nose. Its neck is shorter, but its torso is thinner and longer. It features longer digitigrade feet. Its hands are less developed, with extremely shortened fingers that are no longer separated from each other. Small wings develop on its wrists, while the ones on its back become larger, lose the wing finger passing through their membrane and end up with ragged edges. The back of its tail has a large spike at the base and three smaller ones near the tip, which now burns with a longer flame. Mega Charizard Y is said to have incredible flying prowess that is greater than a jet fighter.
Gigantamax Charizard[]
As Gigantamax Charizard, it becomes larger and physically fit. The lower part of its body glows white with several yellow diamonds located on the lower belly. There are also diamond-shaped spots located on the front legs. The claws located on its hands and feet become longer and sharper. The feet become longer and digitigrade, retaining small glowing soles under the forefeet. The sclerae of the eyes become yellow. The glow of a flame can be seen in the mouth, and the teeth grow, with the lower front teeth and three teeth in the middle now protruding when the mouth is closed. The flame on the tail extends out and has three red clouds surrounding it, like the clouds most other Gigantamax Pokémon have. Two flames sprout from its horns, and its wings are transformed into literal flame wings extending to the shoulder blade. These colossal flamed wings were created from the energy of Gigantamaxing, and are hotter than magma; Gigantamax Charizard uses these flames to burn its opponents. The flames within Gigantamax Charizard burn hotter than 3,600 degrees Fahrenheit (2,000 degrees Celsius), and increase in temperature when it roars.
Appearances[]
Main Pokémon games[]
Charizard is the game mascot of Pokémon Red and its remake Pokémon FireRed, appearing on the box art of both games. In the Sixth Pokémon generation, Charizard gained two Mega Evolutions, while in the Eighth Pokémon generation, a Gigantamax form.
Other Pokémon games[]
Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Red Rescue Team and Blue Rescue Team: Charizard is a member of Team A.C.T., alongside Alakazam and Tyranitar.
Super Smash Bros. series[]
Charizard has been featured in every Smash Bros. video game to date. In Super Smash Bros. and Super Smash Bros. Melee, Charizard appears as a Pokémon that can be randomly summoned from a Poké Ball. When Charizard appears, it attacks the enemies of the player/team that summoned it with a scorching Flamethrower while turning its head from left to right. The attack deals 6% damage per flame in both games.
In Super Smash Bros. Brawl, it makes its playable debut as a summon for the Pokémon Trainer, where you'll be able to control it, among Squirtle and Ivysaur. Its Final Smash in this game is Triple Finish where it, Squirtle, and Ivysaur each use their strongest moves to destroy the other opponents. In Triple Finish, Charizard uses Fire Blast.
In Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS Wii U, Charizard has a newly designed moveset, now separate from the Pokémon Trainer and capable of Mega Evolution to Mega Charizard X for its Final Smash. Mega Charizard X has two attacks: the standard attack button executes Dragon Rush, corkscrewing in the direction the Circle Pad or Control Stick is tilted, and the special attack launches Fire Blast at opponents, trapping them in a multi-hitting flame.
Charizard returned in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, rejoining the Pokémon Trainer's team while its Mega Evolved X form was removed. However, its Mega X form still appears as a Spirit.
Attacks[]
Charizard is a fairly powerful character with his attacks being sort of slow, but dealing massive damage.
- Neutral Special: Flamethrower
- Side Special: Rock Smash (in Brawl)/ Flare Blitz (in 3DS/Wii U/Ultimate)
- Up Special: Fly
- Down Special: Pokémon Change (in Brawl/Ultimate)/ Rock Smash (in 3DS/Wii U)
- Final Smash: Triple Finish (Fire Blast) (in Brawl/Ultimate)/Mega Evolution (in 3DS/Wii U, Mega Evolves into Mega Charizard X)
Trophy Descriptions[]
Pokkén Tournament[]
Charizard is a Power-type character for Pokkén Tournament. Upon entering Synergy Burst, it Mega Evolves into Mega Charizard X and can use the Burst Attack Searing Blaze. Moves it can use include Flamethrower, Fire Punch, Flare Blitz, and Seismic Toss.
In the anime[]
Many Charizard have appeared in Pokémon the Series, but the most prominently featured one has been Ash Ketchum's Charizard. This Charizard is well-known for its character arc: having been abandoned by its original trainer as a Charmander, it was adopted by Ash in Charmander – The Stray Pokémon. While Charmander started as a loyal and shy companion, as it evolved into Charmeleon and eventually Charizard in Attack of the Prehistoric Pokémon after saving Ash from the claws of an Aerodactyl. It developed a rebellious and disobedient streak as a Charmeleon, and only truly bonded with Ash and regained its loyalty when Ash saved its life when it was left out in the cold in Charizard Chills. Following this, Ash's Charizard would continue being a sporadic but loyal and powerful member of his team.
In Pokémon the First Movie: Mewtwo Strikes Back, a Charizard clone named Charizardtwo participated in the battle between the original Pokémon and the cloned Pokémon, battling Ash's Charizard and winning easily. Unlike much of its brethren, Charizard wasn't cloned from Ash's Charizard and it had the same marks that Charmandertwo had, indicating that it was likely obtained by Mewtwo through different means than the ones used to clone the Trainers' captured Pokémon. The Charizard clone reappeared in Mewtwo Returns and Mewtwo Strikes Back—Evolution.
Other notable Pokémon trainers owned a Charizard in the anime are Trevor, Leon, Alain, Kiawe and Friede. Leon's Charizard also appeared in Pokémon: Twilight Wings and Pokémon Evolutions. Calem's Charizard appeared alongside his Chesnaught in Pokémon Generations. Trevor and Alain's Charizard is capable of Mega Evolution, while Leon's Charizard is capable of Gigantamax. Friede's Charizard is capable of Terastal Phenomenon, turning into a Dark-type. Kiawe's Charizard was given to him by his grandfather. He often uses it as his personal Ride Pokémon.
In Pokétoon, a Charizard nicknamed Char-ly appeared in Blossom's Dream which belonged to Blossom's dad.
Red owned a Charizard in Pokémon Origins, capable of Mega Evolution, Mega Evolving into Mega Charizard X while battling and catching Mewtwo. Red's Charizard appeared in a cameo in Pokémon Evolutions.
A Charizard appeared in Detective Pikachu, under the ownership of Sebastian. It is a frequent underground battler, and as such, it fought Harry and Detective Pikachu prior to the events of the movie.
Charizard appeared in The Journey of One Dream, under the ownership of Dominic.
In other media[]
In Death Battle, Charizard fought its fellow first partner evolutions Venusaur and Blastoise and Digimon's Agumon, in which Charizard both lost.
Charizard appeared in the music video for Celestial, carrying Ed Sheeran back home. It is later seen in an animated sequence with Ed Sheeran and his other Pokémon, helping him stop the fight between Mewtwo and Mew.
Origin and inspiration[]
Charizard may be based on European dragons, which are heavily associated with the element of fire in European folklore; this draconic appearance would later be reflected in the Fire/Dragon typing of Mega Charizard X. Like its pre-evolved forms, it may also take inspiration from lizards, dinosaurs, and the mythical salamander. Its English and Japanese nomenclature may be a reference to how Western dragons are heavily inspired by lizards and other reptiles. In the Chinese zodiac, Charizard represents the Dragon, despite being a European dragon instead of a Chinese dragon.
Charizard may be a combination of char (to burn) and lizard.
Lizardon may be a combination of lizard and either dragon or -don.
