- "You think your fancy new suit's gonna save you?"
- ―Doctor Octopus to Spider-Man[src]
Item 17A, also known as the Iron Spider Armor, is an armored version of the Spider-Man Suit comprised of nanotechnology. It was created by Tony Stark for Peter Parker to use as an Avenger, offered to him in 2016 after he prevented Vulture from stealing from a Stark Cargo Plane. After initially rejecting the suit, Spider-Man was given the suit two years later during the Infinity War, using it to survive in space and fight Thanos on Titan. The suit, along with Spider-Man, was turned to dust during the Snap, although it was restored when Parker was resurrected by Hulk in 2023 and was used to fight the Outriders during the Battle of Earth and the following year to subdue members of the Manfredi Crime Family. In the aftermath of his identity exposure, Parker was forced to abandon it.
Parker later used the Stark Industries Fabricator to create a replica suit, which he used to fight Doctor Octopus, who removed a chunk of the armor and transferred its nanites onto his tentacles. After the Neural Inhibitor Chip was repaired, Octavius reallocated the extracted nanites from the tentacles onto Spider-Man's Upgraded Suit, converting it into the Integrated Suit. Parker then abandoned the Iron Spider Armor.
History[]
Creation[]
Taking inspiration from his Mark XLVI armor, Tony Stark created the Iron Spider Armor that contained many new features over the previous suit such as a collapsible helmet and incorporating miniature arc reactors.[2] It could also be controlled by F.R.I.D.A.Y., such as when Stark ordered her to deploy the suit's parachute.[1]
Offered to Peter Parker[]
- "Why don't you try that on and I'll introduce the world to the newest official member of the Avengers: Spider-Man."
- ―Tony Stark to Peter Parker[src]
In 2016, Tony Stark invited Peter Parker to the Avengers Compound in order to offer him a place among the Avengers, having been impressed by Parker's courage when he stopped Vulture from stealing a Stark Cargo Plane. As part of this offer, the Iron Spider Armor was shown to Parker. Despite being sorely tempted, Parker - believing the offer to be a test - told Stark he would rather not join the Avengers yet, and the Armor was returned to storage for safekeeping.[3]
Infinity War[]
Rescue of Doctor Strange[]
- "Mr. Stark, it smells like a new car in here!"
"Happy trails, kid." - ―Spider-Man and Iron Man[src]
One day in 2018, Spider-Man was told by Iron Man to protect Doctor Strange who had been captured and taken in a Q-Ship. As Iron Man pursued the ship, he saw that Spider-Man intended to follow it into the upper atmosphere and ordered F.R.I.D.A.Y. to release the Iron Spider Armor's pod, launching it from the Avengers Compound to Spider-Man.
As the Q-Ship continued to gain altitude, Spider-Man, unable to breathe due to the increasing loss of oxygen, fell off of the Q-Ship's surface moments before the launch pod arrived and the armor assembled around the Spider-Man Suit, resuscitating Peter in time for him to land on the ship's inner ring. Iron Man then boarded the ship after ordering F.R.I.D.A.Y to send Spider-Man home with the armor's parachute.
However, Spider-Man managed to latch onto the side of the Q-Ship with a strand of webbing and release his parachute, quickly resuming his chase. Climbing up the ship, Parker managed to get inside before the ship sealed closed for its flight to Titan. After revealing he was still on board the ship, Stark scolded Parker for his recklessness, to which Parker replied that it was Stark's fault for giving him the armor. Stark reluctantly moved on and told Peter to decide how to take out Ebony Maw below them.
As Maw tortured Strange to obtain the Time Stone, Iron Man attacked and breached the ship's hull, causing the sudden decompression to suck Maw into the vacuum of space, killing him. Strange nearly followed before Spider-Man rescued him, summoning his armor's spider-legs to combat the pull from the sudden vacuum long enough for Iron Man to seal it.[1]
Battle of Titan[]
After the ship crashed on Titan, Spider-Man, Doctor Strange, and Iron Man were suddenly attacked by the Guardians of the Galaxy, during which he was quickly subdued by Star-Lord. Once the two factions realized they were on the same side, Peter stood by while Tony and Peter Quill formulated a strategy, amused by the banter.
Later, during the Battle of Titan, he participated in the battle with Thanos, using his armor and Strange's portals to maneuver around the Titan, even surviving being slammed by Thanos. After Mantis lulled the Mad Titan into submission, Spider-Man used the suit's legs to pull the Infinity Gauntlet off before Thanos broke free. Swinging through the desolate landscape of the planet, Spider-Man rescued Mantis, Drax, and Nebula after they had been flung away by Thanos. Once Thanos had completed the Infinity Gauntlet and used its power to wipe out half of all life in the universe, the armor disintegrated along with Spider-Man.[1]
Battle of Earth[]
- "Activate Instant-Kill."
- ―Spider-Man[src]
In 2023, Spider-Man was restored to life by the Blip, awaking on Titan. Spider-Man, Doctor Strange, and the Guardians of the Galaxy then joined the rest of the Avengers and their allies at the destroyed Avengers Compound in a stand against an alternate Thanos and his army.
During the battle, Spider-Man used his webs to stop Cull Obsidian from attacking Iron Man, pulling him back so Giant-Man could step on him, killing him. Later, he used his Web-Shooters to grab the Nano Gauntlet from Black Panther to deliver it to the Quantum Tunnel. However, Spider-Man was quickly overwhelmed by a hoard of Outriders and activated the armor's Instant-Kill mode to protect him, causing the armor's spider legs to rapidly kill any Outrider that got in range.
As he became overrun by Outriders, Captain America threw Mjølnir past him, allowing him to escape by firing a web strand to latch onto the hammer. When the aerial assault from the Sanctuary II cut his web, Parker was saved by Pepper Potts, who placed him on Warsong with Valkyrie before another blast threw him off. Crashing onto the battlefield, the armor's spider-legs were broken as Spider-Man was helpless to defend himself until Captain Marvel arrived, destroying Thanos' warship and relieving him of the Gauntlet. Afterwards, Iron Man sacrificed his life to defeat Thanos and his army, with Spider-Man at his side as he died.[4]
Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man[]
- "So, keeping the new suit?"
- ―Bristow to Spider-Man[src]
In 2024, Parker wore the armor when he confronted and took down the Manfredi Crime Family.[5] He wore it again to a charity event helping families displaced by the Blip, greeting people and answering the questions of reporters. While packing to go on a school trip to Europe, he decidedly left the armor at home to charge it in the nanite chamber.[6] The suit's nanite chamber was then photographed as evidence by the United States Department of Damage Control two weeks later in July.[7]
Recreated Suit[]
Controlling Doctor Octopus[]
By that fall, Peter Parker recreated the Iron Spider Armor using Happy Hogan's Stark Industries Fabricator.[8] He wore the suit when he went to the Alexander Hamilton Bridge in an attempt to meet with the MIT Assistant Vice Chancellor as she was heading to the airport.
When a universe-displaced Doctor Octopus appeared, Parker fought against him using the armor. During the fight, Doctor Octopus used his tentacles to remove a piece of the armor, and transferred the nanites from the piece he removed onto his tentacles. He then attempted to kill Parker by stabbing his exposed chest area, prompting Parker to reallocate the nanites from his mask to his chest to protect himself.
However, in doing so, he was now unmasked, leaving Doctor Octopus confused as he did not recognize him. The integration of the nanites onto Doctor Octopus' tentacles allowed the armor to pair the tentacles as a new device, causing its neural interface to override the tentacles' A.I. and grant Parker control of the tentacles. Parker then brought himself, Octopus, and the Chancellor up to the bridge. As he showed off what he did to Octopus, Green Goblin arrived, and Parker suited back up.[7]
Enchanted Web-Shooter[]
- "One shot, send them here, move on. You're welcome. Get to work."
- ―Doctor Strange to Peter Parker[src]
After Doctor Strange captured Doctor Octopus while simultaneously transporting Peter Parker back into the New York Sanctum, Strange briefed the young superhero about the incursions of intruders from alternate realities as a result of the botched spell. Parker was hesitant to help Strange round up the other otherworldly individuals, as an appearance on the news would jeopardize his chances of getting admitted into MIT. Strange, however, was tired of hearing him go on about college. He controlled some nanites which comprised one of the Iron Spider's Web-Shooters and transferred it onto his arm, before enchanting it with Eldritch Magic, which turned it into a gauntlet.
When asked about what he had done, Strange suddenly began to demonstrate the new web-shooter by blasting an Eldritch web at Parker, which teleported him into a cell in the Sanctum. Parker would be freed and be given back the gauntlet by Strange before being sent out to find other beings from the Multiverse. During that expedition, he found Electro and Sandman and promptly sent them to the Sanctum, along with a random tree that was hit by the magic web.
Soon, however, Parker decided to oppose Strange's plan to immediately send the visitors back to their home realities, with some to their apparent demises, with the Macchina di Kadavus. He took the mystical box from Strange before sending him to a cell, which did not hold him for long. As he was trying to flee from Strange, Parker tried to use the gauntlet again, but it would be revoked of its enchantment and taken from him by Strange.[7]
Integrated Suit[]
- "I'm grateful, dear boy. Truly."
- ―Otto Octavius to Peter Parker[src]
Later, when Doctor Octopus was given a new Neural Inhibitor Chip, he transplanted the Iron Spider Armor nanites onto Parker's Upgraded suit, converting it into the Integrated suit. Parker ultimately abandoned what was left of the armor in the ruins of Happy Hogan's condominium. The Integrated suit itself would also be retired by Parker once he was erased from all of history and the public's collective consciousness.[7]
Capabilities[]
- "It's bulletproof."
- ―Spider-Man[src]
- Superhuman Durability: Due to the armor's nanite construction, it was able to withstand multiple attacks from the Guardians of the Galaxy, as well as a powerful slam from Thanos. It is also bulletproof, able to withstand the high caliber weaponry used by the Manfredi Crime Family.
- "This suit is ridiculously intuitive."
- ―Spider-Man[src]
- Neural-Reactive Interface: The Iron Spider Armor is capable of quickly responding to Spider-Man's mental input, as shown when Peter mentally deployed the Spider-Legs while rescuing Doctor Strange despite not knowing about the feature.
- "Suit compromised."
- ―Iron Spider AI[src]
- Artificial Intelligence: The suit is also installed with an artificial intelligence system. After Doctor Octopus reallocated some of the Iron Spider nanites onto his tentacles, the Iron Spider AI paired itself with the tentacles and overrode the tentacles' AI, granting it control over them.
- "Nanotechnology. Ah, you've outdone yourself, Peter."
- ―Doctor Octopus to Spider-Man[src]
- Nanite Materialization: Based on the database of his Mark L armor, Tony Stark created the Iron Spider Armor from nanites, allowing it to be stored in a small launch pod that could be deployed from the Avengers Compound, as well as assemble itself around Spider-Man within seconds. The mask of the armor can also be dismissed at will, retracting down into the neckline of the armor. The nanites are easily designed to integrate, which enables the user to be able to reattach any lost nanites that were torn apart.
- "Looks like we got competition."
- ―Doctor Octopus to his tentacles[src]
- Pincers: The armor is capable of manifesting four spider-legs, known as "Pincers,"[9] deployed from the back of the suit and controlled by an A.I. that anticipate how they can help him.[10] These spider-legs are able to withstand Thanos' grip without becoming damaged and can combat the pull of the vacuum caused by a hull breach. They were deployed to control his descent after catching Mantis in mid-air during the Battle of Titan, and previously deployed to stop him and Doctor Strange from being ejecting out of Ebony Maw's Q-Ship. During the Battle of Earth the spider-legs were used as offensive weapons when Spider-Man activated instant-kill mode to protect himself from a horde of Outriders, killing several of the creatures.
- Self-Contained Environmental Protection: The armor is able to insulate Parker from harmful environments such as the vacuum of outer space.[10] When Parker passed out when attempting to board a Q-Ship in the upper atmosphere of Earth, the suit was able to resuscitate him after materializing, providing its own oxygen.
- Remote Control: The armor was shown capable of being manipulated by F.R.I.D.A.Y. at Iron Man's command, notably deploying to Spider-Man's location and materializing around him, as well as deploying its parachute while Stark chased after Ebony Maw.
- Upgraded Web-Shooters: The armor came equipped with large, bracer-like Web-Shooters worn on the wrist and part of the forearm. Unlike the Spider-Man Suit, the upgraded web-shooters also contain a supply of web fluid that eliminated Parker's need for additional cartridges stored externally. The web-shooters were greatly enhanced by Doctor Strange to enable the usage of certain magic properties as shown when Parker uses the new upgrades to apprehend Electro and Sandman and teleport them to the secret hideout.
- Parachute: Like the Spider-Man Suit, the armor contained a parachute deployed from the rear spider symbol.
- Glider Wings: The armor was able to deploy a set of glider wings extending from Spider-Man's wrists to his upper thighs.[7]
- Missiles: The Iron Spider Suit is equipped with missiles that can sprout web fluids, similarly advanced to the Iron Man Armor: Mark L, as shown when Peter uses these missiles fighting against the Manfredi Crime Family.[5]
- Energy Efficiency System: The armor is also equipped with its own built-in energy source based on the database from the Iron Armor's Arc Reactor as it needs only a household plug to charge the suit, required that it needs to be charged within a special stabilizer box as shown when Peter left for Europe.
- Enhanced Combat Mode: Dubbed as "Instant-Kill Mode", this feature allows the Iron Spider Armor to attack with lethality, with the spider-legs functioning as offensive weapons. When activated, the suit's lenses switch from blue to red lights emitting from the eyes. Parker activated this feature during the Battle of Earth to protect himself from a horde of Outriders while delivering the Nano Gauntlet to the Quantum Tunnel.

Trivia[]
- In the comics, the Iron Spider Armor sports a hot-rod red and gold palette similar to Tony Stark's Iron Man armors.
- A variant for the Iron Spider Armor more closely resembling its appearance in the comics was featured as a pre-made design on the Stark Industries Private Jet's worktable.
- The design of the Iron Spider Armor resembles that of Ben Reilly's suit during his time as Spider-Man in the comics.
- There was a concept art of a black colored variant of the Iron Spider suit, which was worn by Aaron Davis in the comics.
- The suit's deployment suggests that the suit has the capacity to be stored in a container slightly larger than Stark's housing unit for the Mark L armor. The deployed rocket booster sheds its outer layer to reveal a smaller containment unit, before shedding again to reveal a small black device that latches on to Parker's back before spreading out over him. However, in Spider-Man: Far From Home, it is revealed that the suit, when not being worn, is stored in nanites form inside a small, transparent box in Parker's room.
- The Iron Spider Armor appears as an unlockable suit for Spider-Man in the video games Marvel's Spider-Man and Marvel's Spider-Man 2. Its associated suit power in the former gives the player access to its pincers, with them being referred to as "iron arms" and are described as "four articulated arms made from rapidly grown monatomic iron alloy crystal."
- The Iron Spider Armor was included as an unlockable outfit for Spider-Man in the video game, Marvel's Avengers.
Behind the Scenes[]
- Originally the Iron Spider Armor was planned to debut in Captain America Civil War. The idea was ultimately dropped and saved for Avengers: Infinity War.[11]
- During the development of Spider-Man: No Way Home, multiple pieces of concept art were drawn up depicting the Iron Spider Armor as various objects that a person would normally wear on their wrist or waist, such as a watch or a fanny pack. These were made at the request of director Jon Watts, who wanted a way the armor could be covertly stored on Peter Parker's person at all times.[8]
