- "What's the MIT mission statement? To generate, disseminate, and preserve knowledge. And work with others to bring it to bear on the world's great challenges."
- ―Tony Stark[src]
The Massachusetts Institute of Technology, or MIT, is a private research university specialized in applied science and engineering.
History[]
Alumni[]
- "You know, it's never too early to start thinking about college. I got some pull at MIT."
- ―Tony Stark to Peter Parker[src]
Tony Stark and James Rhodes attended MIT and met each other there, becoming instant friends. When Stark was 17, he successfully graduated from MIT summa cum laude.[1]
Darren Cross, at 20, graduated from MIT as valedictorian and then was employed by Pym Technologies.[2][3] Additionally, MIT was also the alma mater of Maya Hansen,[4] John Raymond,[5] Erik Stevens,[6] and Tina Minoru.[7]
Simon C. Clowes was a writer for MIT Technology Review, a magazine owned by the university.[1]
September Foundation[]
- "As of this moment, every student has been made an equal recipient of the inaugural September Foundation grant. As in all of your projects have just been approved and funded. No strings, no taxes, just reframe the future!"
- ―Tony Stark[src]
In 2016, Tony Stark gave a guest lecture at MIT, where he demonstrated the students his latest device, the Binarily Augmented Retro-Framing designed by Quentin Beck. The demonstration of the technology included Stark's last meeting with his mother and father. Stark then followed with a speech where he introduced the September Foundation grant and announced that every student had been made an equal recipient of it, giving them all the proper funding to move forward with their own inventions and projects.
Noticing that Pepper Potts was scheduled to give a speech to the students, Stark said his final words before stepping off stage where the MIT Liaison then attempted to get some money from Stark Industries for the faculty funding.[8] Meanwhile, Beck, who also attended the demonstration, was utterly disappointed upon seeing his design being used in such an inappropriate way.[9] Stark left the stage and went to get a drink from the water fountain down the hallway. There he was confronted by Miriam Sharpe, who told him she had lost her son due to the Battle of Sokovia. This encounter shook Stark, as he realized how their actions were affecting others and began to reconsider his views.[8]
Spider-Man's Identity Reveal[]
- "You got us a second shot at MIT."
- ―Michelle Jones to Peter Parker[src]
In 2024, following the controversy surrounding Peter Parker's identity as Spider-Man being revealed, he, Michelle Jones and Ned Leeds were all rejected from the university. In order to reverse this, Parker enlisted the help of Doctor Strange to make his identity a secret again. Strange questioned whether Parker attempted to appeal their applications with the university directly, an idea that he did not know about nor consider before approaching Strange, much to the former's bewilderment and anger.
Parker asked a reluctant Flash Thompson, who had been accepted and was at a MIT icebreaker, as to where the MIT Assistant Vice Chancellor was. After finding her on the Alexander Hamilton Bridge, he personally tried to plead his case to her, but was interrupted by a universe-displaced Doctor Octopus, attacking him under the belief he was the same Spider-Man he knew. During this confrontation, the Chancellor ended up trapped in her car, on the verge of falling off the bridge, but not before Parker managed to save her. In an act of gratitude, she agreed to help get them admitted.
Later, following the spell that erased everyone's memory of Parker, Jones and Leeds were admitted into MIT.[10]
Visited by Wakandans[]
In 2025, Shuri and Okoye arrived at MIT and watched from the parking lot as Riri Williams spoke with other college students outside the college. They then made a plan on how to meet her and Shuri entered the college first, as she felt she could blend in. She found Williams' dormitory and called out to her, and was able to come inside to talk. Shortly, Okoye had also entered secretly and explained to Williams she needed to come with them.[11]
Alternate Universes[]
Killmonger's Education[]
- "Colonel Rhodes, what can you tell me about our knight in shining camouflage?"
"Graduated Annapolis at nineteen, MIT a year later." - ―Pepper Potts and James Rhodes[src]
In an alternate universe, after graduating from the United States Naval Academy, Erik Stevens attended MIT. Working on his doctoral thesis, Stevens created the Project Liberator, which involved automated combat drones that would make human troops obsolete. However, Stevens encountered interface issues that halted the development until the project was picked up by Stark Industries years later.[12]
Paid by the Military[]
- "I don't know what you're talking about."
"I was the Backgammon champ at MIT four years running." - ―Tony Stark to Ho Yinsen[src]
In an alternate universe, Tony Stark was the Backgammon Champion of Massachusetts Institute of Technology for four years straight before graduating summa cum laude at 17 in 1990. During this time he met his best friend, James Rhodes whose education was paid by the United States Armed Forces. Years later, Stark was asked to attend a MIT commencement and agreed but couldn't due to being kidnapped by the Ten Rings. After Stark had returned, he noted that an MIT engineering student would understand the greatness of the Series IX CNC Combo in his workshop.[13]
Backgammon Champion[]
- "Two things. One, I don't know what you're talking about. Two, I was the backgammon champ at MIT four years running."
- ―Tony Stark to Ho Yinsen[src]
In an alternate universe, Tony Stark attended MIT and played backgammon often. He became a champion of the game for four consecutive years. Years later, MIT contacted Stark and asked him to speak at their commencement. Stark agreed, but missed the ceremony due to his having been kidnapped in Afghanistan.[14]
