9 years later and “Mad Max: Fury Road” still wears the crown of the greatest action blockbuster of the century (let´s see if “Furiosa” will be a contender). It´s pure filmmaking magic with an exhilarating rhythm, glorious images, booming sound, tactile practical effects, action scenes that are staged, shot, and edited to perfection, and rich, detailed, and immersive worldbuilding almost entirely free from exposition talks. Max, Furiosa, Nux, and Immortan Joe are iconic and even the minor characters all have well-established personalities or quirks that make them memorable. Furthermore, for a film with such a seemingly bare-bones plot, the screenplay delivers some affecting character arcs and satisfying setups and payoffs. It´s certainly way more cleverly constructed than the plot synopsis “big chase from A to B, followed by big chase from B to A” would make you think. To make it short, “Mad Max: Fury Road” is a movie that rocks on every level. The kind of genre landmark film that comes maybe once a decade, if even that.
