Mad Max: Fury Road is like an insane and delirious present that reveals a newly minted gift within its wrapping paper after each viewing.
I caught this in 35mm at a dollar theater with stains on the floor and cracks in the screen, and somehow, the auditorium made George Miller's masterpiece even more operatic and richly textured. This time around, I was really taken by the ever-evolving nature of the action sequences, broken up by multiple fades to black in order to give the audience a breather from all the mayhem.
Within these moments of silence, all I could hear was the gentle rattling of the projector, whispering its images onto the screen for an audience to enjoy.
For a moment, I almost felt like tearing up, because in an increasing digital and "CGI-ed all to hell" age, I was viewing a perfect marriage of machinery and craft. Practical effects and the shining radiancy of the cinema, together, dancing in the dark.
