Vince The Cinephile’s review published on Letterboxd:
The great George Miller demonstrates a superb action filmmaking at its highest order with this deliriously intense, exhilarating, jaw-dropping comeback release of the iconic Mad Max. This basic story of redemption is turned into something operatic, familiar-but-unfamiliar, mind-blowing tale that punches the gut. Strengthened by its crazy action stunts, overly eccentric characters, soulful message, and fearless performances from Tom Hardy and Charlize Theron--Mad Max: Fury Road is definitely a force to be reckoned with.
There's no need to write what the film IS all about, but it's basically a simple story of a struggling civilization and how its people are coping and fighting against an oppressive ruler. But Miller presents this story strangely enough that makes it unconventionally palpable and refreshing. But those stunts are just CRAZY, HAIR-RAISING, HEART-PUMPING, and MIND-BLOWINGLY INTENSE, and surely one of the best in recent memory.
Tom Hardy's Max becomes a mere accessory to Charlize Theron's ferocious Furiosa. Hardy is predictably cool and steadfast and there's no surprise with it. But seriously Mad Max: Fury Road belongs to Charlize Theron. Theron is the heart and soul of the film. Theron's amazing, no-nonsense performance as Furiosa is her best since her portrayal in Monster. She combined that rigidity and vulnerability in Furiosa making her an extremely complex character.
Ultimately, this film is one of the best, most complex action movies I've seen and definitely will watch this over and over again. Its simplicity comes in many surprising forms and it is refreshing to witness it on the big screen. A very deserved, mad, mad comeback.
