"We don't pick the ballroom, we just dance!"
Long before I was on letterboxd, in the distant year of 2018, I remember going to the theater on the advice of one friend to see Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse. I remember having my mind completely blown. I remember walking out of the theater aglow with happiness. I called my friend on the way home from the theater and barely strung sentences together about what a masterpiece this movie is.
Tonight, in preparation for seeing Across the Spider-Verse tomorrow, this same friend and I had a rewatch of this first movie to prepare ourselves for whatever happens to Miles and Gwen in the next installment. Let me tell you guys: this movie holds up!
Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse is a perfect superhero movie. It nails the origin story while keeping it fresh. It perfectly balances the humor and the drama. Miles is a great protagonist who undergoes a truly potent Hero's Journey. The music is excellent. The animation and the fight choreography within it are stunning. The themes of anyone having the potential to be a hero and taking a leap of faith are timeless, and executed with a sincerity that feels rare post-COVID.
My friend said something to me while we were watching this that really struck a chord with me. He said that super-hero fatigue isn't real. Fatigue from BAD super-hero movies is what's real. Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse is proof that a true super-hero blockbuster can still exist on its own merits. There's no cinematic universe or other set-ups going on. We get a simple, human story with epic stakes and epic pizazz. What is that if not super?
