Well everybody and their mother loves this, apparently. As of this writing the movie had an average Letterboxd rating of 4.5/5. an IMDb rating of 8.8/10, and a 97% positive on Rotten Tomatoes. Quite an achievement for a Sony movie!
So I guess everybody agrees this is amazing, eh? Well, it was good. I give it a little extra than just good because I like plots about multiple dimensions and such, and it felt like it was trying something different. Origin stories are done to death in comic book movies these days, but you can bet your bottom dollar you've never seen one done like this.
Also the animation. Man is it cool looking! It’s reminiscent of both traditional 2d style and stop motion, and the colors range all over the place. But it never feels cluttered or too busy, in spite of some comments made by a friend I watched the film with. There’s plenty of shots you could frame on your wall, namely the climactic flying moment depicted in the poster.
The vocal cast is also top notch, with an especially great turn from the lead, Shameik Moore. It’s about time we got some black superhero movies, and while I wasn’t high on ‘Black Panther’, it’s still an act of diversity I really appreciate. And this isn’t just ‘a black superhero film’, it’s a superhero film that happens to star a black kid. More, please! Four stars.
