Very Early Thoughts. Coming out of the theater I was ready to shout at whoever would listen that this was the greatest comic book movie ever and maybe even the first proper comic book movie ever, and while I've calmed down a bit over the past two days and recognized that a lot of that hype is due primarily to the creative & hyperactive visuals, I still absolutely loved it and can't wait to see it again. The central idea of "there's not only one" is such an important one for any great superhero story to circumvent the problematic American exceptionalism that pervades the genre and which something like Incredibles 2 (by contrast) whole-heartedly embraces instead. And that's just the main point, not to mention all the perfect little details. Still not sure how I feel about some of my own baggage that I'm bringing to the movie (re: the vague heteronormativity, the unquestioned police authority), but mostly trying to recognize it as my baggage and appreciate the movie for what it is for now. Hopefully I'll watch it again soon so I can give you something better than this rambling nonsense.
